I don't mean to spoil it, but the whole film is built around the mystery of Kane's last word, "Rosenthal", which turns out to be the name of his favourite film critic, who left such a lasting impression on Kane that even in his dying moment, he longed for another review.
The sla notoriously used cut down M1 carbines. Hardly fitting the technical description of "assault rifles". More accurately classified as "pdw's" or " personal defense weapons" The "assault rifle" or "sturmgewehr" was moustache man invented propaganda term.
I was there in the bank, i remember that heist. It was quite erotic. She told me "give me your wallet" and i told her "i will give you a lot more than that". Then i don't remember more other than a pain in the back of my head. It was great though. It was my first time talking with a girl.
Captain Video Blaster...why do you have to inject race into EVERYTHING!!! Once, just once I wish you'd look past that - put on a pair of rose bud glasses but alas, I suppose you prefer colored films.
Obviously at the time of the release of Citizen Kane, the world was still in black and white and would remain so for many years to come since technicolor hadn't been invented yet, and the colorization of the classic films was unheard of. Not until the introduction of psychedelics in the 60's hippie generation would the black and white barrier be broken, and a brave new age of colors brought into the world, much like the progression from square wheels to round ones historically.
@@roninreturns everyone knows that colorization of the world and the people remains the worst racist atrocity in human history and I'm disgusted by your jovial tone and talk about "progress" and the "brave new world". Everyone just wants to forget this shameful act, effects of which are still harming billions to this day. But no, not only did you HAVE to bring it up, you provide excuses and glorify those responsible for this inhumane disaster! I don't know how do you even live with yourself.
LOL wtf, I thought the whole thing was an elaborate troll, but she really was kidnapped, that militant group did exist, and she did grow sympathetic to their cause and take part in it. You got me on a two-fer here, Peter.
Sorely lacking in Rosenthal's review of Citizen Kane is the getaway car that Patty Hearst drove for the SLA, which they nicknamed 'Rosebud', in honor of her youthful and fragrant bosom as a tender young woman, idealistically making the transition from the shy young heiress she was to the mature, confident banking and financial genius she would become in the great tradition of the Hearst family.
This is always entertaining for me. The writing/concepts are great. But, as an actor and director myself, I really appreciate the acting. There's an intensity behind his eyes, and a real commitment to character, that make these more than just a goof. Mazel tov.
I do remember when Patti Hearst and the SLA were in the news all the time. It was pretty crazy. But more recently, Patti has appeared in campy John Waters comedies. In "Cecil D. Demented", she played a snooty movie star who was kidnapped by a gang of radical filmmakers and eventually joined them. After that, it was open season on Patti Hearst jokes as far as I'm concerned.
I live in berkeley, I wasn't around when this happened but it still is in the memory of everybody. Weird part is that things keep happening like every two or three years.
I wouldn't say that "My Stepmom's daughter is my ex" is the Citizen Kane of anime; that would be unfair. Rather, I'd say Citizen Kane is the "My Stepmom's daughter is my ex" of movies
i dunno, old movies are boring as fuck. people like to rave about how brilliant they are but they are 90% filler. people just standing around and getting upset for no reason and being boring.
ssevf Hard to say. Kids are so eager to act like dicks for a laugh that it gets kinda dull. I think he knows better than to say old movies are boring, but so many do it on TH-cam that it's not funny anymore. Now this is the part where he'll write back and act like a bigger prick.
Babungo says he has no regrets and I for one take him at his word. While agreeing that the SLA's methods were flawed, I've longed believed that Symbia should be liberated from the fascists who exercise hegemony over it, their only authority being brute military force. In the face of injustice, sometimes you have to rattle the cage. Also, I think Citizen Kane is a groundbreaking film.
"our methods were flawed but our hearts were in the right place" as in "we were bunch of over privileged rich white kids pretending we were a bunch of black revolutionaries" ROFL
Well that escalated quickly.
atomheartother It got out of hand quickly. ;)
6 years later, I was about to write the exact same comment until I saw yours 😂💦
The shit went from 0 to 100
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
excalated*
...and that's what's Citizen Kane all about: The Symbionese Liberation Army.
Rosebud makes total sense now!
I don't mean to spoil it, but the whole film is built around the mystery of Kane's last word, "Rosenthal", which turns out to be the name of his favourite film critic, who left such a lasting impression on Kane that even in his dying moment, he longed for another review.
Relatable
Ridiculously underrated comment.
I think we can all agree that kidnapping people with assault rifles is the pinnacle of modern expressionist art, and should be respected as such.
And therefore legalized
The sla notoriously used cut down M1 carbines. Hardly fitting the technical description of "assault rifles". More accurately classified as "pdw's" or " personal defense weapons"
The "assault rifle" or "sturmgewehr" was moustache man invented propaganda term.
Citizen Kane is the Citizen Kane of Citizen Kanes.
Fascinating, I'd never considered Citizen Kane in this context.
Most of you bourgeoise never have.
I was there in the bank, i remember that heist. It was quite erotic. She told me "give me your wallet" and i told her "i will give you a lot more than that". Then i don't remember more other than a pain in the back of my head.
It was great though. It was my first time talking with a girl.
Will his arrest interfere with the publishing of the next Kingdoms of Toranda?
Hopefully not
We can only pray that it won't.
We can only pray that it won't.
Jail will give him time to refine his great masterpiece
If Citizen Kane is so good, how come it is black and white?
Captain Video Blaster German expressionism.
some emo kid applied the wrong filter during editing.

Someone just edited the wikipedia page of Patti Hearst to mention Peter Rosenthal...
Well, it's gone now
That's a fresh take on Citizen Kane. Thank you.
Babungo is truly a model film critic.
By far the most in-dept review of Citizen Kane on TH-cam.... Beautiful, Peter left no stone unturned...
This was this year's Citizen Kane of satirical Citizen Kane reviews.
LOL wtf, I thought the whole thing was an elaborate troll, but she really was kidnapped, that militant group did exist, and she did grow sympathetic to their cause and take part in it.
You got me on a two-fer here, Peter.
One of the best Citizen Kane reviews I've seen in quite a long time.
I never watched 'Citizen Kane' because it doesn't have giant sharks in it.
I guess you never watched Beenami either beucase it has bees instead of sharks.
Who told you there are no giant sharks in Citizen Kane?
I for one welcome our giant shark overlords!
It does have a Giant octopus though.
SharKane-o
This was a really really good look back at Citizen Kane.
Kane is Batman's coolest enemy but this prequel needs a reboot.
I can only hope my life will be as full as his. This is a man who has broken free of the shackles of the mundane to truly experience life.
Well this completely turned into something not a review pretty fast.
In video Rosenthal was the boy in The Shining. In another, he was a full-grown revolutionary, the year before. Something doesn't add up.
Satire.
Froot Loop The Onion is satire!!??
You're just now catching on.
He was also a religious nut in the Ghostbusters review yet in The Force Awakens he went in-depth describing the loss of his virginity
Are you questioning The Onion's credibility?
Best Onion video I've ever seen
I love how this ended up being not even slightly a review for the film.
This is always entertaining for me. The writing/concepts are great. But, as an actor and director myself, I really appreciate the acting. There's an intensity behind his eyes, and a real commitment to character, that make these more than just a goof.
Mazel tov.
Best Citizen Kane review i have ever seen or heard.
The Onion is going to run out of ways to not talk about classic movies.
Brings a whole new perspective to one of the greatest films of all time.
But according to his review of The Shining, Peter Rosenthal is 40 years old. WHICH IS IT, THE ONION???
Journey?!
Oh man I love Journey too!
both
The german doppelganger fairytale is true!
He was born during leap year - everyone knows that!
That was some of the smartest and most bizarre humor I've seen in a bit...nice job Onion.
3:39 lookn' good and he still looks good.
Very insightful review
Rosenthal is clearly an ace critic, and complete bad arse :')
I do remember when Patti Hearst and the SLA were in the news all the time. It was pretty crazy.

The best part of these videos is waiting for the joke in the beginning.
I live in berkeley, I wasn't around when this happened but it still is in the memory of everybody. Weird part is that things keep happening like every two or three years.
Onion satire makes my miserable life worth enduring.
I'll never watch Citizen Cane in the same way again.
These are just the best.
Donald DeFreeze’s final word was “Rosenthal”.
Peter Rosenthal was a fox when he was younger. You can still see the remnants of that hotness in his face even today. Well aged man.
The best Citizen Kane review I’ve ever seen.
Brilliant. What a trip, so many levels. Bravo, Onion!
You need to fully recover from your cold before filming, sir. I love these videos! Thank you for making them.
Back Achoo.
This took a turn in a direction I didn't expect.
such in sight
Wait a minute, so "Rosebud" was Patty's SLA name?
holy shit
I wouldn't say that "My Stepmom's daughter is my ex" is the Citizen Kane of anime; that would be unfair. Rather, I'd say Citizen Kane is the "My Stepmom's daughter is my ex" of movies
""Rossenthal""
It fits.
I got 1 Word for you Peter Rosenthal, that SHOULD have been your SLA name: Rosebud
Wait... did Patty Hearst really marry a prison guard? Is there a term for someone who has chronic Stockholm Syndrome?
That was depressing.
wait what
I enjoyed the pictures of a young Peter. What a nymph!
i dunno, old movies are boring as fuck. people like to rave about how brilliant they are but they are 90% filler. people just standing around and getting upset for no reason and being boring.
ssevf Where do we send the medal?
Gordon Chin Oh look everyone: the contrarian Troll has an opinion. Let's throw peanuts at it.
ssevf Hard to say. Kids are so eager to act like dicks for a laugh that it gets kinda dull. I think he knows better than to say old movies are boring, but so many do it on TH-cam that it's not funny anymore. Now this is the part where he'll write back and act like a bigger prick.
i was being serious.
cqtaylor You were right
A much better love story than Twilight :)
You gotta bring Rosenthal back to do Mank!
Brilliant!!
The hell is his moustache
First the awesome voice man of the Onion Week in review, now the Onion's head film critic?!
Oh shit, I never knew Patti Hearst was William Randolph Hearst's granddaughter!
Babungo's greatest movie analysis yet.
At 3:39, young Peter K. “Bubungo” ROSENthal looks a lot like a young Scott Ian ROSENfeld. Tell me that that’s not a coincidence!
So Peter Rosenthal is kinda like Clifford Banes.
the kidnapping tangent totally took over this review!
Hey, it happens.
This did make me wanna see the original though.
Citizen Kane clips have the wrong aspect ratio, something that well shot should NEVER been seen other than its original 4:3 ratio.
Set out to review a movie but deliver a powerful social analysis that makes us think... Thanks again Mr Rosenthal
Babungo says he has no regrets and I for one take him at his word. 3:44 There is a very obvious spelling error in that newspaper. I am disappointed.
Eh, Peter missed the bigger picture of the movie
*swoosh*
what a twist lmao
We're all behind you, Bobungo! We love you, Bobungo!
I am reminded of Sean Connery's brilliant line as James Bond in Never Say Never Again: "I am to eliminate all free radicals."
Apparently other than his involvement everything he said was true, with the Stockholm syndrome chick.
Wait, this was actually true.
Peter K. Rosehthal, you were the best
I don't see how he could avoid mentioning Clifford Banes key role in the Hearst kidnapping.
I miss Babungo.
The titular kidnapping that defined this reviewer....
Peter K. Rosenthal aka Babungo 🤣
3:38 HOLY SHIT ITS McGRUBBER!
I'm doing the math and somehow Scott Baio winds up a Navy seal planting a sealed powder keg off Cuba
Isn't this just a clip from Network?
Young Rosenthal was hot af
I really hope this isn't the end of this series.
haha...Babungo
I can't tell if this is real or not
Patti Hurst smoked a lot of rose bud in the 70's.
Is this true?
Jesus Christ this is avant garde
If you don't get it; Citizen Patty.
Rosenthal was based then
The White female members of the SLA adopted thick black American accents. Lol White folk identifying as black - as if that was ever gonna catch on.
Where's the cane from Citizen Kane?
How do I join the SLA?
This is pretty damn awesome.
The greatest movie ever made
"our methods were flawed but our hearts were in the right place" as in "we were bunch of over privileged rich white kids pretending we were a bunch of black revolutionaries" ROFL
