Robotech was all of the TV episodes of Macross, all of Southern Cross and all of the TV episodes of Mospeada. These series were only one season long as it was, and didn't meet the minimum episode requirement individually, so Carl Macek meshed them together to create one series that although was no longer Macross, Southern Cross or Mospeada was long enough to be shown on American TV.
As a Macross fan and one of the many people who saw Robotech when it first aired, all i am going to say is that both have their places in people's hearts. I personally like Macross for its story, Kentaro Haneda's orchestrations, and Mari Iijima's beautiful voice. Robotech is ok but I think that modern anime owes a lot to Macek and what he tried to do regardless of what other people think. Besides if Rebecca Forstadt and Mari Iijima can acknowledge their characters, why can't we have peace?
I'm actually kinda glad they brought it over. They didn't really have a choice but to mash up three different series back then to air on TV. But from what I heard, I don't like how things are being run these years...
Robotech was the splicing of 3 very different shows into one new show with lots of redubbing to meld the stories together. Macross was the first segment of that.
@StrikeFreedom986 Just for the record, Veritech is the name of the machine itself. Valkyrie is the name designation given to the specific model (VF-1, VF standing for Veritech Fighter) from the original Macross Saga. This carries over from Macross to Robotech.
@AliveStorm93 yes it does.Studio Nue used that movie to relaunch Macross as its own entity not tied to the Super Dimenison series like Southern Cross. Also it was more than a summary it explains the protoculture in more detail and should be viewed as a retelling of SDF Macross.every series (except Lover's Again)after DYRL is set in that timeline.DYRL is the start of the current Macross timeline.
@zeroswings2 I think the defining moments of anime were when Akira was released in USA, and when Dragon Ball Z was aired on TV. Robotech didnt do much for anime , which explains why anime was pretty much a niche throughout the 80's and early 90's. Until Cartoon Network started to air Gundam Wing , anime was still considered kiddie TV.
american Producer Calr Macek took 3 series and wove them together to create Robotech. Macross, Southern Cross, and the third series were actually separate series. The only thing they had in common was the word "Super Dimmensional"
Yes Nekki Basara's singer is the same person singing this song which is Yoshiki Fukuyama. I like this one better than the original the full song is almost 4 mins long.
@StrikeFreedom986 that may be true but so many wouldn't even know what Macross is if it weren't for Robotech... no matter how Harmony Gold hacked up the original story, I still like it-it was a defining time for me with anime. I've like the genre ever since...
Macross The Tribute(Macross 20th Anniversary Commemoration Album), VICL-60991/Victor Entertainment. You can order it through amazon.com and many other places. ^-^ peace
See the trick with Macross/Robotech is this: Harmony Gold is keeping a stranglehold on the liscense. In terms of being one of the first companies to bring anime to North America they get props for that, but if you look at the result of it all? they fail miserably. There's been a considerable amount of Macros related content overseas (such as the new Macross Fronteir series starting next year), however we don't see it thanks to them.
I don't think so, Harmony Gold signed a deal with Tatsunoko Studios, the animators of Macross, and the other series that became Robotech here. The only reason why it became a problem was when Harmony Gold decided to strongarm the other dubbing companies with the claim that they own the rights to the Macross sequels, which was what Big West disputed. Harmony Gold still has the rights to Macross, hence the logo on the redubbed Macross DVDs.
@sanjurosama So it needs to be aired to that people knows about it? How did we all learn about Macross if only Robotech was aired then? Also, Michael Bradley still performs the songs he did for Yellow Dancer, while Mari Iijima rarely gets the chance to sing somewhere...so yeah, you got the point.
It seems you missed this album because it is not a Fire Bomber CD but a compilation of Macross Universe songs as performed by other singers. (Hence the title "The Tribute"), CD information is Macross the Tribute, VICL-60991.
@MikersCorbenik Harmony gold also tried to stop the sale of macross toys outside japan which hurt the robotech fans who wanted to buy the cool macross toys. They were afraid it would hurt sales of robotech obviously. But since then they've backed off and I don't mind if robotech lives on in some form as long as it seperates itself from macross and evolves into something else. If a live action robotech movie is made for instance I would like to see original mecha not seen in the tv show.
@JamesBond77 Hey ! Don´t be so hard, man. Many of us ( I included) discovered Macross thanks to Robotech. And even though Macross (specially DRL?) is simply ASWESOME AND WAY SUPERIOR, I will always thanks Robotech for letting me know it.
I'm pretty sure after the new SDF (the one with Hayase commanding) launched, they journeyed to the center of the galaxy and somehow got nearly sucked into a black hole and folded through it. Now they're lost in space, nobody knows where it is now. That's the gist of it, I'm sure someone else can provide details since I don't know them exactly.
Soooo great with Neki-kun singing!!! Wow... As an American girl who was first exposed to "Robotech" as a part of this series... I feel a tad cheated. more than a tad... The dialog and SONGS (which are very important in the Macross universe) Are totally LOST, and watered down! Give me the teen romance and beautiful lyrics! w00t! my 2 cents.
@nytrospawn you've proven my point again... were it not for Robotech, you'd not know a thing about Macross. We all have Harmony Groves greed to blame for their being no Macross here-they wanted to change everything and make it their own and the original creators weren't accepting that. There are other factors too like studios running out of funding... but don't blame Robotech for that. Besides Robotechs greatest impact was ushering anime into the mainstream.
I wonder why the producer never remade macross 1 animation. Fist of north fist was remade and was well received, it about time they remade macross 1. It been almost 30 years since macross 1 ended.

"Harmony Gold still has the rights to Macross" Not really : "In 2002, the Tokyo District Court ruled that Big West/Studio Nue is the sole owner of the original character and mecha designs for the first series, while that same court ruled in 2003 that Tatsunoko owned the production rights to the first series." Meaning that Harmony Gay has NO RIGHT to use SDF Macross characters and mechas. However, HG has still the rights to distribute SDF Macross worldwide without altering it.
It amazes me how angry people get when talking about the two series. Robotech wasn't some deliberate idea theft it was an attempt to get around series syndication regulations that existed at the time. Macross only has 32 or so episodes and not the 65 required at the time, harmony gold had to be creative to get the Macross on American TV.
Hikaru's VA died, and since he and Kawamori were pretty close, Kawamori decided not to include Hikaru in any subsequent Macross production out of respect. So I'm told, at any rate. Isn't it a delightful mystery though?
Not that much editing, compared to Southern Cross and Mospeada. A few name changes. Aside from that, the story and characters came through pretty much intact.
I think it would have been cool to see Orguss meshed in there too. I think they could have made it fit, especially since the character designs were by the same artist.
Damn fine video here. Would have been nice if you had set it to the opening withought the subtitles. The subs are the only problem I have and it's pretty minor.
@MikersCorbenik And cows can fly if you keep saying it long enough. Not everything foreign is big in Japan, for example AC/DC isn't nearly as popular in Japan as in many other countries. Michael Bradley or Ulpio Minucci haven't released or performed any Robotech songs in Japan, Robotech wasn't aired or released in Japan and Mari Iijima admitted when asked that she thought the music in Macross is better.

Basara singing the original opening is a definite win
FIRE!!!
BOMBER!!!
Never realized he sung a version of this song. Great.
T_T
Holy crap!
I didn't even know that this version egzists...

First I get to see and hear Bassara singing a duet with Sheryl and now I hear this...
I must be dead 'couse this is HEAVEN!!!

growing up as a child back in the early 80's..this is the best animation. to me it still is. remember Min May?

FIRE! I love Fire Bomber's Songs and also i love Macross.
FIRE! Nice version!
I have watched in Lativi or Tv one (Indonesian broadcasting station). But, I hope that RTV must launch back again in that animated Japanese series.
@zeroswings2 I think the defining moments of anime were when Akira was released in USA, and when Dragon Ball Z was aired on TV. I like this one better than the original the full song is almost 4 mins long.
AWSOME!
This song song brings back memories of my child when I first saw this tv series before the us made the us version renamed robotech so many memories
Wow... how did I miss this one???
Look for the album "Macross The Tribute". It's the first track. :)
@davismw2000 Tatsunoko owned the the Super Dimensional label that Macross and Southern Cross were both marketed under.
cool and the song matches even though its old but yea it matches very well
@StrikeFreedom986 that may be true but so many wouldn't even know what Macross is if it weren't for Robotech... no matter how Harmony Gold hacked up the original story, I still like it-it was a defining time for me with anime. I've like the genre ever since...

ugh the hunt continues for me to find this album...and I just want it for this song and Minmay's version of Angel Voice.
Está de pelos!!! Excelente versión!!

Right, right. Either way: VF-1 Valkyrie in Macross. VF-1 Valkyrie in Robotech.
Dang dude, my espanol really sucks, but I can tell you trully ripped that guy a new one! I hope I never make you that mad!
@MikersCorbenik

@DigitalForceCA yeh! and changing and adapting the adversary`s morals and technology into something of benefit for both sides...

@rexthegecko253 No, there's rumors of a Robotech movie. 100 percent sure it won't have any relation to Macross or Robotech Macross Saga.
Soooo great with Neki-kun singing!!! Wow... As an American girl who was first exposed to "Robotech" as a part of this series... I feel a tad cheated. more than a tad... I wonder why the producer never remade macross 1 animation. Fist of north fist was remade and was well received, it about time they remade macross 1. It been almost 30 years since macross 1 ended.
The most beloved classic anime of all time! I hope they made the movie version based on the original macross and not that damn robotech!
Nothing like Yoshiki Fukuyama singing the original Macross theme
Actually, It was a season of Macross, then a season of Southern Cross, and then a season of Genesis Climber Mospeiada meshed together.
That's 'cause TV Syndication standards back then wouldn't allow for a series as short as any of those three by themselves.
@ShonenNinja91 I grew up with Robotech and I watched the Macross series... they're pretty similar.
Both are good.
This is the cd info but don't know if you can find it now keep trying. If you dont have the cd info you can also try ordering it at a japanses cd store if they do that where you live.

what i'm trying to say is the live action movie and i agree DYRL is that damn good!
classic!
This is awesome, I love Battletech!
Can't you just imagine Fire Bomber performing this?
i agree with you dude! i like this macross compared to the junks that followed! : )
They're going to make a movie about Macross?!

bellissimo
hope they can remake the first macross...
このMAD待ってました。画は断然セル画の方がいいので、それとバサラ版の組み合わせが観たかった。
That would be awesome, although I am a sucker for that old 80's charm in animation...
@JLCL01 At the end of the day it's just an animation. People have better things to be bickering about than a show about transforming planes and aliens
Well... all we know is they lost contact with them roughly 4 Years after the Megaroad-1 Launched.
We don't know what else happened. Its almost bait for Fanfic writers to cross them over with another series.
lol !!! Good one dude.
@slyther2
But what if it was a live action movie, painting, or a novel; would the statement still apply or what? (not suggesting anything, just wondering)
It's actually kind of more complex than just "transforming planes and aliens". It's also about love triangles and stopping wars via singing pop songs :u
But yeah, hopefully these "M/SC/M VS Robotech" argument die down or something since barely anyone is actually commenting on the video.
oh thx dude for answer =)

@syujyou what do you mean to say about Robotech? If ou hate thhe show then that's perfectly fine. I respect your opinion
@MikersCorbenik
Mari Iijima is much more popular in her native country than in the US, that much is true but to my knowledge Michael Bradley has never performed in Japan. Where is your proof that Ulpio Minucci's songs are popular in Japan? Just because Michael Bradley is some sort of David Hasselhoff of South America doesn't mean he's known in Japan.
2009 promised the first contact with an alien species. 2010 promises Dr. Wily taking over the world and a robot rising to defeat him. WILL IT HAPPEN?
I didn't and I think it because you shouldn't watch it from Zero, if you've seen What Dreams May Come you would probably think the same if its concept wern't printed on you.
I tryed to understand and have fun along with it, putted myself in the possition of the revived people and their lack of memmory everything felt right.
Where you found it dull I found it deep.
Take care mate.
Robotech is the exact same thing as Macross for the first 36 episodes, then it mangles two completely unrelated series to get them to fit with Macross. It wasn't a great dub, but it was serviceable, and if it were something other than Macross getting dubbed you probably wouldn't care.
muy bueno
Actually all of Robotech was ripped off from the other series. Shadow Chronicles was the only "original" piece they did, and that was outsourced to a Korean animation company. I /think/ it was one that on occasion works with studio Gonzo (of Full Metal Panic fame), but I can't remember where I heard that tidbit so don't quote me on it :P
@JamesBond77 Ok I retract what I said, I was confused. Robotech is not Macross and neither does it carry the name. I grew up with both series, and somehow it got all mashed up in my head. Sorry about that. Nevertheless, Studio Nue was the one that gave rights to Tatsunoko Production in exchange for finance, Tatsunoko then sold the rights to Harmony Gold. @1Soulless1 Really? Voltron, Speed racer, Astro boy, star blazers, thunderbirds, all came before robotech and were animes from Japan. My problem is that macek had the audacity to make sequels as if those stories belong to him to add to

Macross director Noboru Ishiguro didn't even know about Robotech and Shoji Kawamori hasn't talked that favourably about it either.
You still haven't proven that the Japanese know about the mutilation of Macross that became known as Robotech. I'll give an example: How many Americans you think have seen the German dubbed version of Titanic? Why should the Japanese care about Robotech?
@RoninofFire why do people hate robotech so much? I enjoy them both.
@airgearbleachfan
...What about watching the ADV Film dub version of Macross?
