  • Although we don't have the dedicated Nightfighter version of the Mosquito, using it in the night together with searchlights is absolute doable and very enjoyable.
    This mission was a simple case of getting across the channel and intercept bombers coming from France.
    Thanks to taxi lights and airfield lighting, taxi, taking off, finding the airfield and landing are just as easy as during daylight ops.
    And thanks to the DF (modded beacons for Normandy) navigating is a breeze too.
    The only thing one could have a bit of trouble is with shooting. In this case I used tracerless ammo, and as you could see, it's difficult but nice to look at when you hit (to be fair, out of 3 runs, this one was my worst).
    Notes:
    Brightness has been increased for better visibility when watching. Ingame it was darker.
    The crappy landing was because I was steering from external views (from where the camera was looking)
    The Airfield lights are a mod of mine. The layout is based on the Drem Light System used by the RAF.
    I used a beacon mod so I was able to get DF homings on the Normandy map.

    Excellent graphics, good story, great job. These aircraft had shrouds covering their exhaust ports to protect the crew’s night vision and reduce the chance of detection.

    I really like the lighting in the Mossie's cockpit at night.

    I am confused by the visibility of the incoming tracer and the lack of any apparent outgoing tracer from either the .303 Brownings or the 20mm

    • @Razor_Sim
      @Razor_Sim  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why confused? You can load rounds without tracers...

      @@Razor_Sim Tracer rounds have a pyrotechnic composition in the back of the bulletin which in machine gun ammunition is cylindrical rather than ball which has a boat tail. The gasses form produce an aerodynamic effect which together with reducing weight as the trace material burns means that their velocity does not drop as fast as ball and therefore the trajectory is higher. All guns and ammunition suffer from dispersion which results in a cone of fire and despite the difference in velocity most tracer will fall in this cone meaning that it is able to fulfil its primary role of assisting in the assessment of fall of shot i.e. how close to the target. This enables the point of aim to be adjusted by sight to put rounds on target, especially at night. My understanding that for aircraft machine guns the standard belt composition was 1 trace , 1 ball, 1 armour piercing (AP) 1ball and anther AP repeated, meaning 1 tracer every 5 rounds. Whilst belts could be re configured , even with belting machines it was a long and highly manpower intensive exercise. As regards visual effect because the burning was a the rear of the round it was more difficult to see if you were the target, however at even a slight angle, not only can you see the trace but it also has the unfortunate effect of assisting the enemy in identifying where the fire is coming from. Hope this helps.

    Really cool. Great flying & shooting.
    Can you get closer before you fire & they see you?

    I am amazed your engines never overheated as your radiators were closed for most of the flight and the oil temp was very high. Looks fun.

    • @Razor_Sim
      @Razor_Sim  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oil temp was 70 degrees C, max is 90 degrees C, so not really high.
      And overheating depends on many factors, like engine settings, ambient temp, airspeed etc. Also while the switch is labeled with "closed", the radiators don't actually fully close and shut off the airflow. There's always a bit of air going through (in case you didn't know)

    what time / date settings have you been using in this mission? I like how the night is not at all pitch black.

      Was set to 21.06.2016 00:00
      But you can use any date that has a full moon or close to it and the night will be brighter.

      Only with a mod

      The lights from this system were most of the time on and could be turned off in case of emergency. They were set up in such a way, that the lights were only visible within a small cone.
      In addition to that, there were also dummy airfield lights to attract/distract enemies.
