  • Having read and watched good reviews of the Decathlon Van Rysel RCR carbon racing shoes online, I decided to buy them as soon as they were back in stock. I was disappointed that they do not meet my expectations!
If I'm honest, although the spec sheet looks promising, Decathlon have cut many corners to get the shoe down to a price of £169. The compromises made and corners cut are difficult for me to overlook and I'll be returning the shoes. In this video I explain why I don't recommend you purchase this shoe. It may be good for anyone on a tighter budget but I think in the long run you are better saving up an extra £100 and buying a premium cycling shoe. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Thanks for this comprehensive review. I was about to get a pair but now I think I’ll try the sworks torch 3.
I also noticed how close the dials are.
Not down with the corner cutting although they look pretty cool I’d have to drive 40miles to try a pair on.
    Wouldn’t mind a review of the DMT’s tho 👊

I'll get a review out for the DMT's this week. I'll let you know when it's uploaded. Done a couple hundred of miles in the KR0's and the SH10's. Also have the Shimano RC903's to review as well.

Thanks for the comprehensive review, awesome! I like the sound of those DMT SH10's, but they look like that knit-weave material would get grubby super quickly. How have you found keeping them clean? Cheers.

I bought them before watching your review. They fit me perfectly. I agree with you, there are some quality issues. I don’t know it this is supposed to happen with any white shoes, but the white stitch around the dials and the white pads around the laces tend to turn orange after a few rides. The problem for me is that most bike shops in my city don’t have road bike shoes, so it ends up being easier to buy them at Decathlon. I agree there might be better options, but I didn’t have the patience/time to order online different shoes with the uncertainty about sizes etc. At least I could try them in store & buy them on time for my weekly group ride.

Shame about the stitching discolouring. If you look at Decathlon’s track record I can definitely see them making improvements on the next iteration of the shoe. And 100% agree on the try before buy, good move. Glad they fit you!

@@chasemason5129 Maybe the discolouring happened because I used the shoes for hard indoor rides with a lot of sweat. I just realised there are specific shoes for indoor riding, with better ventilation. By the way, oddly enough the only 2 decathlon shoes which fitted my foot perfectly were either the most basic 55€ entry level ones or these expensive 170€ shoes. I wish we could have a big worldwide cycling store with all sort of cycling shoes/jerseys/bibs brands to try in-store, I think it would solve a problem and allow us to make better purchases. As it doesn’t exist, I accept products with compromises, like these Van Rysel shoes.

    I’d recommend a Lake CX332 you’ll get a much better fit
    Thanks for sharing your experience

Funny you mentioned the Lake CX332! When I had my shoe fit, there was a Lake representative with their new range of shoes. I tried the Lake CX333’s in an EU 44.5. Fit perfectly. The price though was a bit too spicy for my liking 😅

Good review. Looks like you need shoes with a more pointy end because of how your toes taper from the big to little toe.

Thanks! You’re exactly right. Trying out the DMT SH10’s and I’m having a much better experience, but it’s early days

which shoes will you get then? S-works torch 3 is the industry standard I would say - especially design wise, they look georgeous

I’m trying out the DMT SH10’s at the moment. Bought them off Amazon for £249. Fortunately had a £200 Amazon voucher so only paid £49. I wasn’t planning on doing a review on them but I’ve realised there are none on TH-cam in English. Miles better than the Van Rysel’s in terms of quality.

If the shoe don’t fit, don’t wear it

I literally said in the intro to the video to discount the point that they don’t fit because everyone’s feet are unique. Watch the rest of the review and you’ll see why I still don’t recommend the shoe regardless of the fit. It’s 36 minutes long for a reason and I film myself in the store wearing the next size down.
