If someone made a list of the ten best video game songs ever composed for the NES sound chip, I bet at least half of the list would be songs from Shovel Knight. Virt's music is incredible. It really is masterpiece-level composition.
More recently, I was watching some Twitch streams of The Messenger, and people kept talking about how good the music was. Then someone said he thought it was the same person who did the music for Shovel Knight. This gave me a sudden and intense surge of indignation. I felt insulted on Virt's behalf. Could people really not tell the difference? Aside from both games using the NES sound chip, the music has nothing in common. It's like night and day. I can't really say The Messenger's sound track is bad, but it does seem solidly mediocre and simplistic. I'm not a very good composer, but even I can listen to The Messenger for a quick ego boost if I'm feeling bad about my limited skills. But Virt pretty much blows me away with everything he makes. I probably won't be that good even if I spend the rest of my life trying.
And the outcome of it all, was a complete success, and it's still amazing 5 years later, plus with 3 DLCs, an online battle mode, multiple ports, and a confirmed sequel, I say Yacht Club Games has done a stupendous job with Shovel Knight Treasure Trove, and they're still boatin' along smoothly on the water.
Honestly glad the joke didn't die. Shovel knight is easily one of the best games I've ever played. Sure, it can be a bit infuriating at times (but let's be honest, a lot of indie platformers are quite difficult), but the characters and the plot is simple yet effective, and it's a quite faithful twist on NES games of old (music included, Jake Kaufman's works are amazing). And with King of Cards and Showdown on the way, I'll never get tired of this game. It's been ported to every console of this generation and the one before, but that just helps its success. So cheers to you, Shovel Knight. May your shovel blade never dull and your armor never dent. FOR SHOVELRY!
A buggy work of passion (a game where there was an earnest effort to make something good) is better than any slickly produced game where the heart and soul of the company is not into it.

Nice moral … except that for every successful indie studio that succeeds despite this kind of hardship, there are ten more that go bankrupt that we never hear of. Mind your survivor bias.
I think this is a reality of any art-form and path that anyone wanting to create art for a living needs to accept if they want to prosper. If the thought of failure or never having a "big break" doesn't prevent you from working hard, than you'll be happy no matter where you end up. Cause most artists/teams/games will never get that "big break." And that's okay.
"Also, they're bias to companies that trudge on until they succeed, success is more about determination and sticking to something than being lucky enough to survive." It must be nice to still be able to believe in a just world.

My favorite part is when these people start acting like douche-bags (since they think they particularly earned it) and dismiss other peers' lack of similar success to their efforts "not being enough".
Here's a story you'd likely really enjoy covering: A freeware passion project of twelve years between three friends that garnered enough attention to be swept up by an overseas publisher for a remake. The publisher backs down after a few years of work without warning, forcing those three to think outside the box. They release, become a cult hit--- and even decide to go for a sequel. With the help connections that they made recovering from the loss of their first publisher they were able to put together a successful kickstarter. It took five years to release between an emergency where the lead developer was unable to use his hands, a huge earthquake in their city, and the choice to switch to Unity mid-development---- but it's finally out and fans agree that their work is just as great as it has ever been, if not better. It's just sprite and text swapping. The game plays identically with bodyswap mode. The most expensive thing of this feature is the sprite assets, which would already be based on the existing sprites so there is no need to change frame data/palette. Also because of the presentation how gamers are, there are probably more people who have used body swap mode than people who beat the final boss. That's pandering to the far left, and I can't see the demand for such a feature being anything larger than a tiny fraction of the playerbase.
