    I own a very similar tattoo gun I use to do my own tattoos. Important note with the needle skipping, the black grip part near the tip should twist/tighten. That actually sets the depth of your needle, so you don't have to stay as far away from the art to get it not to skip.

    (Sandi) In my woodburning kit there is an embossing/tranferring tool. It uses the heat of the stylus to be transferred through a disk-shaped attachment to transfer gtafite or ink to a surface via gentle heat. Works on wood, might work on leather.

    For adding detailed images to your leather, and make it feel even more authentic, I would try doing Pyrography! You'll need a wood burning tool, and I'd recommend the ones that have a silver metallic box as a stand, and has a wire connecting them. Burning a design into leather gives it a dark brown burnt look where you've used the tool, and it burns a slight groove into the leather. I can highly recommend it, having done detail work on a lot of leather armours this way.

    Just yesterday another channel I subscribe to was showing off almost the same tattoo machine you used with some modified cartridges for tooling leather and down the rabbit hole I went. First, the tooling cartridges look cool and I have to get some. But I came across another video that did tattoo the leather and was talking about the splattering. His solution, which looks to work, was to coat the piece in PVA glue, let it dry, tattoo it, dry it again and then wash off the glue. The outcome looked absolutely wicked.

  • @JoannaPiancastelli

    I'd love to see you do some durability tests on these methods to figure out which ones could last on, say, a flexible piece of armour, or outside in the rain.
    It could be cool to get some of those inkbox tattoos you mentioned that use dye rather than sticking ink to the surface, as well as things like pyrography and henna.

  • @elspark101
    @elspark101 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When I was working with teens at the library, we did a henna tattoo event. To transfer the (ink-jet) patterns to the skin, we used a q-tip and a small bottle of essential oils (peppermint, not that it matters). Then you press the image where you want it on the oiled skin and hold it down for a few seconds. Best part, when you peel it off, you can use the henna directly on top of the ink and it stains the skin exactly the way it should!

  • @matthewfetrow4033
    @matthewfetrow4033 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A high quality wood burner with adjustable heat settings also works very well, low heat and some practice and you can save a lot of money not buying tattoo ink all the time. Plus you can dye over it without fear of messing up the design.

    I've seen folks using temporary tattoos on tumblers, but never on leather. I'm loving this idea! I made a Wavy Thing on a Stick (flag) with my favorite knight's sigils on it for a ren fair - I printed out the sigils on regular paper, turned them into stencils, taped them down really well and used spray paint. Turned out sharp, and he loved seeing it in the crowd. He even signed it!

    I've made transfers with my ink jet printer and butcher's paper. Worked perfectly. No alcohol required, but you have to move fairly quickly before the ink dries. Also, just a sharpie works good too if you are into free handing a design. The tattoo gun, man that is brilliant! Going to get me one!

    I love these ideas and now i really want to get a tattoo gun just to do this with!
    Other alternative methods I've used to traditional tooling:
    - Woodburning
    - Dremel
    - Laser-printer
    The laser printer was tricky because I had to figure out just the right setting to engrave the leather without burning through it, but once i figured that out, it produced a really cool look that basically looks like a finely-detailed branding.

    When I do the ink transfer I use magazine paper to print on.. it also works well with laser printers that use the powder and not the wax ink (copiers work as well) ... the other possibility is use your laser (CO2 and Diode) to engrave the leather... note it smells but works really well ...

    I've given leather prison tats by scoring the shape with an awl and coming back through with a gel pen, ball point pen, permanent marker, or just the awl point dipped in leather dye. The pens give it the same gray-ish faded look a prison tat has, which could be preferable in some applications.

    you could use a projector with the tattoo gun instead of a transfer and get most any picture you want. i also would wonder how alcohol dye (like the stuff you use to dye resin) might work. Also since your forcing the dye into the leather if waxing or some kind of prep for the surface of the leather would keep the dye from staining if it splattered.

How laserjet printers work is they put melted plastic onto the paper with a static charge. It follows that if you heat the paper it might transfer the plastic to the leather if you apply force with the iron.

    I have a project request! I go to sca event and often camp for days. After a full day of fighting, dancing, walking, and just existing in all the dirt, I would give anything for a hot bath! Do you think you could come up with a camp bathtub? Something that collapses for travel? A way to soak aching muscles and wash away the dirt of battle?! Mr. Bubbles has lite the beacons, bathers call for aid!!!

    I wonder if you could put a resist on after you transfer your design and before you tattoo! So you don't stain your leather. 😊

    Maybe use the temporary tattoo as the stencil for use with the tattoo gun that way the splatters will go onto the plastic that’s on the tattoo and then at the end you should be able to remove that somehow, maybe use the leather dye. Didn’t it dissolve it immediately?

    Cleveeer!! Damn you were so close! You CAN transfer leather using printers.... but with LASER printing.
    You print whatever you want WITH LASER, then put it on the leather and use UNIVERSAL SOLVENT. You use a dauber or a clean rag to rub the solvent kinda hard into the paper until the paper disolves away leaving the print into the leather, I have SEEN it but I don't know if you can then put a finish or dye the leather I thought that is what you were gonna try! it would be great for you to know there IS a way

    You know, this could be used for a necromantic banner, stitching pieces of leather together of different thicknesses and softness, having some pieces having been tattoo'd "before being harvested" there
