    Hey Tee,
Please be the 1st one on TH-cam to compare the mighty SMSL SU-1 to the J2.
There isn’t a review or a video on the internet that compares the SMSL SU-1 to the J2. The SMSL SU-1 also has the AKM 4493 chipset.
Amazon has it for $79 with free return.
Have a very Merry Christmas 🎄🎁

First off anyone who loves Alice In Chains is already a winner in my book and certainly one to be trusted. But what really seals the deal is you speak in real talk and leave the blowing smoke to others. With you I never feel like you are out there trying to sell products. And you have no idea how refreshing that is and much we appreciate you for that. Certainly I do at least. Thanks for your informative and well put together thoughts my friend and you have a splendid day.

The j2 has been my work horse for the last year and half. I installed the Sparkos 2590 op amps and had amazing results. Currently waiting for the new Mustec MH DA 006 . It's a HUGE upgrade.

    Solid Review👍............................
Good videography and a good pair to go head to head. It's difficult in this price range. There's only a small handful of only DAC, DACs. No volume or EQ's etc. Besides these two there's the Bifrost, Cyan 2 and what? Made in the USA is best but I'm really struggling against those balanced rows of resistors along with all those caps & a nice Copper doughnut.

If you want to take your Aeres II to the next level, Venus II level, contact Ian Canada. He has an upgrade clock that’s far better than most clocks on the market. But you would need to be able to solder with a very fine solder tip.

@ yes. there is debate between which is better and that debate sidelined me from Qutest. Qutest has a little more resolution which takes it into analytical territory and a little deeper soundstage which is always good…but Mojo 2 is often regarded for having more natural timbre.

I have the upgraded J2 and one item of note is that if you play lower quality audio like TH-cam, you will know it, the DAC brings out that level of detail. Feed it great audio sources, and it is amazingly good.

@@tee-jaythestereo-bargainph2120 If I play a WAV file I recorded myself, from my laptop via USB into the J2, the sound is so much better than the same audio having posted it to TH-cam that is makes me sad, so in the end I am using the J2 only for the best sources and I will use a less detailed DAC like the SMSL SU-8 for TH-cam audio listening because I can fully enjoy it still, sort of like Kraft Dinner is great as long as you don't directly compare it to the mac and cheese Boston Market made.

Geshelli is the king for DAC under 2k.
Can’t get behind the Aries. Sound. In my system Seems too much wasn missing. Unnatural to my ears. Bass is kinda all over like the imaging was for me. Image is just all together. Can hear layers a little, not as well defined or etched as Geshelli.

@fletchermunson6225 yeah. I first saw the Cyber sale price on US Audiomart a couple days ago. The drivers/tweeters he uses is what intrigued me. Better or at least more expensive than anything one gets in a mainstream type speaker at his price. And then I read just a little about the crossover circuit he uses. No capacitors & apparently no phase issues. I'd like to see some objective data on them to see what that crossover is really doing.

I have a bias, I had a small high end audio cable business in the 80s and 90s. It was an uphill battle trying to get dealers. It was pre internet. Then there were maybe a dozen cable makers now there are probably a couple hundred. Fritz makes a superior product but swims uphill against the tide. Not too many of the designer/owner guys left. All corporate and Chinese made now. I like to support guys like that. I own Rogue and Belles. All made in the US.

I’m looking to get the V7’s put in there but thinking about putting two v7 vivid and two v7 classic. It might give the dac the perfect blend of detail and organic texture to the sound. I’m glad to hear you think the burson is the middle between the two dacs, that’s pretty much what I’m looking for. Do think the v7’s made the sound staging wide or deeper, better overall?

you want to make some connecting leads up using cat5 cable 100 ohms for the coaxial in, and 120 ohms for the USB, you don't need power for the USB, your get a much smoother sound. works great with CD players or transports as well. give it a go! you'll be surprised how well it sounds like silk. also cut the power red off the lead on the USB if you are using a standard cable.
with the op-amps you can piggyback the chip using the same chip just solder the pins together. probably sound better than those aftermarket cost a dollar to buy. I'm not sure about wima capacitors?? a lot of people don't like them, maybe swapping them out for tantalum capacitors would give you a better result and or LCR polystyrene. what i have being looking at they seem to have a cold sound chemical to them wima.

@bespey not sure what you mean by pointing you in the direction to listening. you have to make sure it's 100 ohms CAT cable. I Grant you it's a bit tricky not very secure! getting the RCA plugs on there just use some of the extra wires you're not going to use, and wrapped them around the single strand without connecting the other wires to the positive or negative terminated short of wire! as a support, and put some heat shrink over, and then heat shrink over the whole plug and cable afterwards.

Wima's do have a hard sterile sound. Have experienced that multiple times in different circuits. The best (affordable) caps I've used are EPCOS MKP (blue blocks).
