A Disgrace!! Why we need a Register of Derelict Buildings.

  • I spend all my time Speaking Up Doncaster.
However not all is rosy. Sometimes we need to call out the things that are wrong. That’s how we improve. My Derelict Buildings Bill yesterday was one such example. There are too many places in Doncaster that are derelict and have suffered decades of neglect.
I named some of these on the floor of the House yesterday in the hope that those responsible can take note and we can return our wonderful city to its former glory.
Here is an extract from my speech which can be read in full here:

    EXTRACT
“As I come home on the train to Doncaster from Parliament on a Thursday evening, the first listed building I see is Denison House by the railway station. The windows are smashed, weeds are growing out of the guttering and there is general neglect. Derelict.
I walk through the station and see the Grand Theatre, another listed building. Derelict again.
I walk through town past Waterdale. Derelict.
I pass by the new expensive and shiny but half-empty council building, and on South Parade I see another Denison House. Also listed, and also derelict.
This is the former home of Sir Edmund Beckett-Denison, the man who in 1848 brought the railways to Doncaster. That building of his is now an eyesore. Derelict again.
As I drive to the towns and villages across my constituency, I pass Tyram Hall. Derelict.
I keep on driving into Thorne to view the works to reopen the leisure centre, and I drive by Haynes House. Derelict.
    I pass Thorne brewery. Derelict.
I have a Secretary of State visit Doncaster, and I take him to Edlington’s leisure centre. Derelict.
Prince’s Crescent. Many properties there are also derelict. The list goes on and on.
Why is this so? It is because there is no register, no personal responsibility and no example set by Labour-controlled Doncaster Council. The powers they hold are not being exercised.
Labour’s care for our city is seemingly as derelict as the properties I have described.
We cannot let this state of affairs continue; if we do, all we shall see is further deterioration and more derelict buildings.
It drags us all down to their level. Levelling down, not Levelling Up.”

One wonders whether this "register" is for the locals benefit or for the benefit of property developers (Tory donors)

You've just voted in favour of the renters reform bill, despite it including an indefinite delay to the end of no fault evictions which the government first promised to ban five years ago. England's 11 million tenants were promised an end to section 21 notices back in 2019. Since then, almost one million tenants have been evicted under the process and the excuse now offered up by the housing tlsecretary and government is the report has to be commissioned by the MOJ to find out whether or not the courts can deal with the volume of expected cases if sec 21 is abolished..
When it comes to the government's Rwanda scheme, it can suddenly find 25 court rooms, 150 judges and 5,000 sitting days.
Shame on you and the government you represent.
