You're the bomb! Your explanation and advice are right on point and I love your sense of humor. I predominantly use wood wicks and just started testing cotton wicks similarly to how you test yours. There were lots of trial and error with wood wicks and it took me about a year or two to finally get it right. The biggest learning curve was having patience. I used to do a mid-way test to save on wax, but I discovered that was so incorrect. That's the worst test ever. Just like you stated, I learned that you must pour your candle to the top as you would sell and go through a complete burn test. In this manner, you know somewhat how it will burn in a customer's home. Ohmygosh there are so many variables, but your video was one of the best I've seen by far. Much love to you! I may have to make some concrete vessels soon. 🙂

Surprisingly I'm depressed after watching this. It seems candle making is extremely complicated and I feel totally overwhelmed. I'm not starting this hobby, it's just too much. Makes me sad, but at least you helped me find that out, so thank you I think.
Just want to say a MASSIVE THANK YOU. This video is incredibly informative and delivered in an enjoyable and easy manner to understand. I’m relatively new to candle making and have come across some issues with wicking with my new jars. You’ve explained it all so clearly that I now feel far more confident to proceed. I’ve made a few errors in my short journey and a few months back I’d have felt like giving up after all the setbacks I have faced thus far. But your explanation has actually encouraged and enabled me to move forward, shrug off the wasted resources up to now, and go on to find my perfect wick. While testing without fragrance is so obvious, being new to this craft I relied a lot on other maker’s tips to teach myself, and I’ve not heard anyone mention this before, and as such I hadn’t done so either. I’m determined to make “perfect” candles for each of my own blends. Thank you thank you thank you!!! New sub here!
Good video highlighting the need to understand what elements are fixed like the wax to establish a benchmark then apply the variables such as colour or fragrance. This way you avoid confusion and always have a point to reset back to.

I’ve been blending my own waxes, finding the perfect % of each paraffin and Soy. Taking into consideration my fragrance oils. Wicks have been a challenge as I have four different size containers all various different diameters and heights. But I like this info and I plan on putting it into play immediately.
You will figure it out. It’s not always easy but if you do the work now and do it thoroughly you’ll be more successful in the end. Let me know how you do.
Can you try and help me understand a theory of mine? The higher Flashpoint fragrance oils seem to be more viscous and require a hotter burn to really throw in the air would you say that's true or false? So if I'm having difficulty with a high Flashpoint fragrance it would mean I may have to change my wax formulation to a wax blend that is not as viscous?
I'm a newbie again, tried 25 years ago and now so much has changed. Not sure where to start, wax, wicks, vessels and fragrances. I'm in holistic healing so want my brand to represent that..
Hi Kerry. That's wonderful. You want to see hang up so that you have added protection from the flame. In order to maintain a proper temperature on the surface of your jar you will need a bit of hangup. Think of hang up like a coating.
I’ve been trialling for over a month. I either great a great meltpool but large mushrooms or a terrible melt (over 5 hours) with zero mushrooms. I’m exhausted.

this might be a stupid question, but is adding pigment to concrete candle jars considered a variable that can change the way the candle burns, even if it’s the same mold?
That's not a stupid question. I haven't experienced it personally. It's probably not likely but not improbable. I would have to test them with all the other variables constant.

Yes I can see how that is a problem. I would personally start with Zinc, Ultra Core and possibly a CD or CDN wick then go from there. Are you set up systematically? Which wicks have you tested? Also, did you test fragrance free first?
i have tried Eco’s and it started off fantastic but then burned way too hot as it reached the middle.m, so I wicked down and it tunneled lol. I also tried LX and HTP. LX kept downing no matter what the size was and HTP was pretty good if I double wicked but then I tried HPSP and it was nearly perfect aside from a teensy tiny bit of hang up on one side of the vessel which i read is *normal* for coconut and beeswax. I have some CDs laying around so I’m going to experiment with that and order these other ones you’ve suggested. I also haven’t tried them without fragrance so I’ll do that too. @@moooonbeams Let's start with this... there is no such thing as a perfect candle. There might be YOUR perfect candle but there are too many elements for perfection. With that said you want hang up. Don't get caught up in the "I need a full melt pool by 4 hours". Trust me that is incorrect information. Ideally you want a little hang up. If one side has hang up try twisting your wick when you secure it. As it burns it will help with that one sided hang up. In my opinion you seem to already have a winner.

Thank you for mentioning the part about reaching a full melt pool on the first burn. I used to get so hung up on that a few years ago.

Wait the amount of time you were burning the candle. So ever time I burned the candle for 4 hours I let it cool for 4.
