Maybe in the USA but in the rest of the world those things are extremely basic. Common sense should tell them that the sun can't be nearer to us than the moon. I don't think that they even know what the sun is. There was one American lady in a previous show saying that it is a planet.
Radrook I’m pretty sure most of their ‘confusion’ was just for laughs as it makes it more entertaining. But nonetheless,, that doesn’t account for every American as a whole. It’s not an American thing,, it’s just people acting dumb on purpose. No need to think all Americans are idiots
MarshmallowMan74 How embarrassing - it was 10th grade for me... (back in ‘77) and it was the first time I had difficulty comprehending a subject. The only thing worse for me was Trig the next year!
They didn't ask for exact distance, just closest approximation. So almost every 6th grader and older should know that both answers are off by at least several million miles ! Which is not a trivial mistake at all. :)
the only thing anyone should know at that point is....Light needs 8 minutes on average to reach Earth....Light goes fucking fast (extra knowledge = almost 300.000km/s) .... Say something in the hundred millions.
Hillary Clinton Seriously? You don't need to remember anything. Line accross USA is almost 3.000miles. So their answer makes it about three and a half round trips from east to west coast. Does that make sense now? Obviously people just don't think about absolutely anything these days.
Juli Baker It’s easy to forget all that grammar stuff when the teachers don’t review it with you after elementary school. Ahahaha ur comment barely has any likes compared to his. And I knew it was adverb lol...
If anyone is interested this is how I solved the last question without looking it up in what I think is a pretty reasonable manner. First I laid out what I know and what I think most people know or at least have heard of. 1. The speed of light is 3*10^8 m/s 2. It takes 8 minutes for the suns light to get to earth 3. There are ~1.5 km in a mile That’s all we need! Here are the calculations: 1. Divide the speed of light by 1000 because we want it in km 2. Divide that by 1.5 because we want it in miles. Now we have the speed of light in miles/sec. 3. Multiply that by 60, that’s the speed of light in miles/minute 4. Multiply that by 8, and you get the speed of light in miles/8 minutes, or the suns distance, and we have the answer! ((3*10^8)/1000)/1.5)*60*8 = 96000000 So my answer was 2 million off. Thanks for reading!
I worked it out differently, bear in mind i just did my astrophysics a level and maths a level so stuff is fresh in my mind. I remembered that it is one astronomical unit from the sun to earth, but couldnt remember the conversion rate so used the definition of a parsec, which is the distance where the angle subtended against a distance of one astronomical unit is one arcsecond. A parsec is 3.26 light years, one light year is 9.46*10^15 m, therefore multiplied those together. Then using the small angle formula, in radians, I multiplied my parsec value by π/(180*3600) to get a rough value in m from earth to sun. Then converted to miles by dividing by 1000 and then again by 1.6. I got 94.5 million.

undisputed it is suppose to be in light years because miles are to short in astronomy, unless you do the conversion which gets you to 94 million mile or ablest somewhat close to it.
Don't wanna sound smart but when they ask the question "how far is the sun from earth" I was expecting them to say numbers in millions, also wasn't expecting them to get it right, but I lost it when they said 20k and 40k miles. I mean it's common sense that the sun is millions of mile away. Lol we shouldn't have lived in the first place if the sun was 20-40k miles lol
tomas simiky Yeah but man, they have been to school before, they have access to TV and internet and you would imagine at some point in their lives they came across information that the sun is million miles away. It's just, you never think people could be this ignorant
Zoelakerbot I was thinking speed of light is what 180000 miles/s (or something?), and it takes something like 8 minutes to reach Earth. Those numbers are all wrong, I know, however they're ball parks (compared to 20,000 lol).
Zoelakerbot I guarantee the answers were given for entertainment. Jimmy basically never wins, he loses on purpose so guests win the competitions. Also do you really think the 5th graders are that dumb? :)

Bankz You can tell them to FUCK OFF for correcting your grammar, and yes maybe they need to get a life, but don't call their corrections invalid. It's your intelligence that is invalid buddy.
I learned this stuff long ago, but I know for a fact that it was not in 2nd grade. And I really feel like people on the show are pressured by competition or whatever and forgot common knowledge. I know when I stay up for hours studying for finals and exams, I almost instantly forget everything when I see my test.
thats what scientist tell you and you trust them . you dont actually know yourself though. im not a flat earther but the earth might be flat. the sun might be 1000 miles away. gravity may not exist. dont believe everything youve been told your whole life. you never know
Jiren The Grey You are a fuck boy I can tell that by reading your comment. Listen you create your own units and do some experiments fuck boy. In all seriousness just buy a powerful telescope and observe the moon or a planet you will know if they are spherical or flat. And about the distance between the Earth and the Sun just learn maths and calculate your own distance in your own units.
A few years ago, Pitbull came to play where I live, and he showed up to the concert 3 hours late, sang for 30 minutes, and then left to go to an after party.
Yep. I’m in my masters program and we had to do multiplication and long division without a calculator for a pharmacology exam. That was crazy. But in the real world we are going to have calculators to calculate dosage. No one in the medical field has time to be doing multiplication by hand.
GeekyGrace 10 It’s called “mental pruning”. The brain forms memories when new information is learned, but when information goes unused, it is deemed useless by the brain and is removed to better use energy and to replace the space with info that is more important.
Lol^^ Light from sun to earth needs 8 minutes. Light travels by 300.000 km/s. (even this is bigger than 20.000) Multiply with 60, than miultiply with 8 Than devide by 1.6 (to get miles) It's more than 20.000 :D
in der theorie geht deine rechnung auf wenn man aber bedenkt, dass sie nach dem jetztigen Abstand gefragt haben,müsste man noch die ellipsenförmige erdrotation einberechnen.
20,000 miles away? THE CIRCUMFERENCE of the EARTH is 24,000 miles! The fucking moon is 238,900 miles from the Earth and that's our closest neighbor. Not even close.
they could have just estimated the difference in lightspeed. it's nearly common knowledge that it takes around 8 minutes for the sunlight to reach earth. So, it'll be around 8 minutes multiplied by lightspeed which is 300,000 km/s. Each mile is 1.6 km so it'll take a minute of calculation in your mind to approximate it's way above 20 or 40 thousand. My first guess was 90 million. guess it was pretty close.
I remember when I was in kindergarten looking at these kids and think wow they are so big I want to be a big kid. now I'm in 9th grade like awwwwwww there soo cute
"The sun is 20.000 miles away." My jaw dropped in disbelief. If something is playing to the "uneducated ignorant American" stereotype, this is. And this fellow is hosting a Late Night show.
To people complaining they didn't learn these in elementary and that they are too advanced, I don't know what school you went to. These are pretty basic stuff honestly.

If anyone is interested this is how I solved the last question without looking it up in what I think is a pretty reasonable manner.
First I laid out what I know and what I think most people know or at least have heard of.
1. The speed of light is 3*10^8 m/s
2. It takes 8 minutes for the suns light to get to earth
3. There are ~1.5 km in a mile
That’s all we need!
Here are the calculations:
1. Divide the speed of light by 1000 because we want it in km
2. Divide that by 1.5 because we want it in miles. Now we have the speed of light in miles/sec.
3. Multiply that by 60, that’s the speed of light in miles/minute
4. Multiply that by 8, and you get the speed of light in miles/8 minutes, or the suns distance, and we have the answer!
((3*10^8)/1000)/1.5)*60*8 = 96000000
So my answer was 2 million off.
Thanks for reading!
Wow. I would have just said alot
I learnt how to work out the diameter of the sun
*smart* ,
Or just that song 93million miles
1 mile = 1.609 kilometers not 1.5 kilometers
I worked it out differently, bear in mind i just did my astrophysics a level and maths a level so stuff is fresh in my mind.
I remembered that it is one astronomical unit from the sun to earth, but couldnt remember the conversion rate so used the definition of a parsec, which is the distance where the angle subtended against a distance of one astronomical unit is one arcsecond. LMAO. I didn't know the answer either but I guessed it was in the millions. If the sun were only 20 000 miles from earth, we'd be bacon.
there wouldn't even be a "We" lol
+Luiz Muniz - or bacon
+Ashley Montana Yeah, I mean the US is ~3000 miles coast to coast. Both of them should have a reference of what thousands of miles is like, as I'm assuming they both fly a lot.
I guessed 300k miles 😂
+Chad O well yeah 😒 which is why my estimate was too high
20,000 miles. Seriously?
AppleAssassin It was probs meant to be a joke, coz I'm pretty sure that they would know that it'd be *ALOT* further away then that.
Bankz than*
Mr Kitten L, *NO*, they aren't.
Bankz You can tell them to FUCK OFF for correcting your grammar, and yes maybe they need to get a life, but don't call their corrections invalid. It's your intelligence that is invalid buddy.
Bankz They are valid. The more you protest, the dumber you look.
There's a trick i learned in school about the planets

I just face palmed when I heard the answers for the last question. Anybody with a brain would have guessed at least a million miles
I learned this stuff long ago, but I know for a fact that it was not in 2nd grade. And I really feel like people on the show are pressured by competition or whatever and forgot common knowledge. I know when I stay up for hours studying for finals and exams, I almost instantly forget everything when I see my test.
thats what scientist tell you and you trust them . you dont actually know yourself though. im not a flat earther but the earth might be flat. the sun might be 1000 miles away. gravity may not exist. dont believe everything youve been told your whole life. you never know
Jiren The Grey you don't believe in Science anyways, you "believe" in things like Religion, Science is not something hypothetical.
Don't blame the kids.
But the adults were pathetic 😂😂😂
Jiren The Grey You are a fuck boy I can tell that by reading your comment.
Listen you create your own units and do some experiments fuck boy.
In all seriousness just buy a powerful telescope and observe the moon or a planet you will know if they are spherical or flat.
And about the distance between the Earth and the Sun just learn maths and calculate your own distance in your own units.
That was the shortest game I’ve ever seen
A few years ago, Pitbull came to play where I live, and he showed up to the concert 3 hours late, sang for 30 minutes, and then left to go to an after party.
That slightly made me breath out of nose harder.".
He's always coming here to San Antonio and whine he comes he's hardly late and sings for like an hour or 2
Lily .x2_ Cool.
+AllyBear I didn't say that.... All I said is when he come here he's never late.....
I'm in high school and I didn't even know how far the earth is from the sun
Autumn Rose why didn’t they teach you that lol
Autumn Rose I knew it was more than thousands
They don’t teach us shit in highschool get real
Neither did the fifth graders
I’m in high school and I made a guess of 93 million which was really darn close to the actual answer
Pitbull is like the sweetest guy...
SCREW THAT! PLUTO WILL ALWAYS BE A PLANET TO ME! IT WAS INCORRRRRRECT!
If Pluto is a planet then there are thousands more similar planets to name!
Your f*cken true
Nova Lutiont oh yes.... let’s listen to you and not an entire FEDERATION with people TRAINED to do stuff like find out what’s a planet and what’s not.
Nasa specifically said that “Pluto” is a DWARF Planet. Hence, you are wrong
If Pluto is a planet, so is a lot of the debris floating between Mars and Jupiter. Time to relearn the whole Solar System.
1:15 I think Jimmy found his emotional equal
Pitbull "But I'm thinking...I'm thinking world geography cause, you know, Mr. Worldwide, Angie"
Lol this had me dying 😆😂
Is this what happens to adults? Do they just forget everything? 😂
Yeah pretty much, unfortunately.
It has been a year, have you forgotten anything yet? =P
GeekyGrace 10 let's see you remember all these information after school.
GeekyGrace 10 Not everyone...
Did he say 40,000 miles. 😂
Seriously if a car can drive that far then the sun would be pretty damn close 😂
IKR
Erik Pryor good for you
Lmaoooo
Erik Pryor yeah thats the point
Wait a fat minute, chemistry wasn't until 10th grade😂
Not for me
Im taking Chemistry now, im in 8th grade
I’m taking it in 10th too
Ikr😂
Lol^^ Light from sun to earth needs 8 minutes.
Light travels by 300.000 km/s. (even this is bigger than 20.000)
Multiply with 60, than miultiply with 8
Than devide by 1.6 (to get miles)
It's more than 20.000 :D
ClemensAlive geez not good at math ,, am spinning, but thanks for this info
in der theorie geht deine rechnung auf wenn man aber bedenkt, dass sie nach dem jetztigen Abstand gefragt haben,müsste man noch die ellipsenförmige erdrotation einberechnen.
ClemensAlive did you really expect Jimmy and pitbull to know that lol
ClemensAlive woher wisst ihr sowas xD
ClemensAlive Our moon is a lot closer than our sun and it's almost 240,000 miles away. Yep they had to be playing
This was adorable
Pitbull is literally Pitbull. If that makes sense.
“I’m thinking, Mr. Worldwide, Angie”
How does this show even prove if you're smarter than a fifth grader? The fifth grader is helping
Cause you only get 3 cheats, after that you're on your own
+Princess Girl but there was only 3 questions lol
Luke Chapman Well yeah this was just segment. On the actual show you go through all the questions and catagories but only have 3 cheats.
Yeah true lol
not knowing the answer and asking for help would mean a person is not smarter
Angela actually goes to my school. She's currently in 6th grade. She's a nice person, and she obviously got 1st honors.
+Renzo909 stfu
Renzo909 I was never bragging about it..
+TheWanderingFox. good for you 😄
Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Jan.
I believe her, you guys are just bullcrap.
When I was a fifth grader Pluto was the farthest from the sun
Mie Osaka when i was a fifth grader i got angry because i didn't get a biscuit for getting a hard question right
Pitbull was amazing on this . .
"ya know Mr.Worldwide Angie I think this could work." had me dying😂
D3LT4 k
ahepperl 238,900 miles? Fuck off, my closest neighbour is a few meters away.
j
jason walker ... dumbest person on earth.
i need that angela in my life, loved how she was hyping pitbull and was saying "ive a good feeling about this, and patting on his back
I remember when I was in kindergarten looking at these kids and think wow they are so big I want to be a big kid. now I'm in 9th grade like awwwwwww there soo cute
your young im about to finish school and go to college
Abdoulie95 - Both of you are young. I just finished my masters.
Ģangsta Mini Mę all of you are young I’m 5 years into my career
Wait until you're 30. Seeing a 5th grader will just make you want to cry.
Haha I'm in 11th grade
Omg that kid is made for jimmy 😂😂
Jimmy and Tres, it's almost like Jimmy is staring down at his past self haha. The way those two were was awesome.
Right when I heard Pitbull ... I clicked out the video
and pressed liked lmao
cmon he gave us an amazing era
"The sun is 20.000 miles away."
My jaw dropped in disbelief. If something is playing to the "uneducated ignorant American" stereotype, this is. And this fellow is hosting a Late Night show.
Yeah, was he just trying to be funny? That's scary if he's being real. Also, Pitbull, wtf?? You don't have to be smart to be rich 🤑
His name is jeff.
2:57 Damn Pitbull bad habbit...
I know I saw too...
watch wear he was about to put his hand before trying to hug her
He could just be awkward around children I know some adults that have done things like that because they aren't really used to being around kids.
Tres and jimmy trying to figure out how far away the sun is is so cute
To people complaining they didn't learn these in elementary and that they are too advanced, I don't know what school you went to. These are pretty basic stuff honestly.
Agreed.
trust I learnt this stuff
+Iris B. It all is, except for the sun thing, you have to either remember or be allowed to do math, all I remember is how long it takes light to travel from the sun to the earth.
agreed
I learn by a Canadian curriculum
you know who Pharrell is? no? didn't think so. lol
Borderlands808 i do
That killed me! 🤣💀
I only knew him from the voice lol
Pharrell Williams.. Happy song!
