For 2024, Grand Seiko expands its Evolution 9 collection with more compactness, more elegance and a hand-wound movement. You’re watching MONOCHROME and here’s a closer look at the brand-new Grand Seiko Birch Bark Hand-Wound SLGW003 and SLGW002.
First presented in 2020, Grand Seiko’s Evolution 9 collection introduced several updates to the brand’s design codes as well as a brand new series of movements, evolutions of both the automatic and Spring Drive families - including the innovative 9SA5 Calibre with Dual Impulse Escapement. In the meantime, several important models joined the family, such as the acclaimed White Birch or the Tentagraph.
At Watches and Wonders 2024, Grand Seiko launches another important pair of models, the SLGW003 and SLGW002. More elegant, more compact, slimmer and mostly equipped with a new hand-wound movement, the calibre 9SA4.

*The ultimate part of this release is the lug width is 20mm, this makes it SSR Tier Grand Seiko, if you're a Seikopath you can relate with the frustrations of 19 or 21mm lugs. The movement is a spec monster, but we know that's a given. 20mm lugs are a gamechanger in my OCD mindset. I'm getting one when I go on a work trip to Japan this fall. I'll get it from the Ginza flagship just for the memories*
Absolutely lovely!!!! Reducing case size, longer indices, less thickness and the amazing dial are stand out features
I am getting old. That gold one just tickled my fancy.
Wow I'm so lovung the size of this watch
It's brilliant!!
Thats so good ❤
First GS hi beat manualwind movement in over 50 years btw!!
Oh yes, so it's a pretty big deal and looks amazing don't you think?
Stunning watch. Great review! Thanks for sharing.
You're welcome, glad you liked it!
Love that there is no date
Yup, that is a very good thing with this one!
would like it more if it has no text in the bottom.
Nice, the birch pattern actually has the correct orientation of the white birch tree, unlike with the original model. The pattern is also less loud, leaving one to pay closer attention to enjoy the details.
And, I especially like the "bird peck" winding action. This 9SA4 manual wind movement is noticeably different than the 9SA5 (Seiko claims about 40% difference), so it's not a simple removal of the automatic winding system.
The White Birch SD dial is quite a bit more subtle than the HB version
The OG birch dial doesnt represent the bark, but represent multiple trees standing next to each other
The White Birch dial was actually inspired by a forest of birch trees, whereas this is inspired by the bark of the individual tree. Bit different, both quite cool if you ask us!
Rather than spend 10K or even 40+ K go and bag yourself a vintage King Seiko 38mm hand wound version from 50 years ago which is around £600 . The small compromises you have to make (date window) are worth it given the huge saving.
banger
to showcase this watch you have to show people how the handwinding sound!
Unfortunately as you can see… these were blocked prototypes so we couldn’t wound the movement. And the hands were not turning
@@Monochrome-watches thanks for info
The new handwound movement is amazing. The little 'Wood Pecker' design shape for the click as you wind it is just so playful and clever perfect for a 'Birch' variant.
It's just such a shame that precious metal variants are always brutally expensive. You somehow expect GS to buck that trend as they do everything else but unfortunately it seems that is unavoidable.
Not Crocodile, but Calf strap, so when shipped internationally, the strap can be included because it does not violate CITES treaties
The sample we had was indeed put on a calfskin leather strap with a crocodile scale embossing but GS does state in the press release and the website it will be delivered on a crocodile leather strap though.
i’ve bought this and been told it’s crocodile
as nice as it may be youve got to have rocks in your head to spend that kind of money on a seiko. seriously. like im having a stroke over that fvcking outrageous price. Make RM/urwerk/hyt/other hype factory watches seem reasonable
Man...GS is getting very bold with their pricing...
Almost 40k premium for a gold case? 🫣
That surprised us a touch too to be honest.
