You gave me the final, and necessary, push to read Bataille, a great experience ! But at that time I religiously watched all of your videos anyway, so that does not explain the surplus of views. Very happy that you are back making more videos !

I’m so glad to hear it!! It’s certainly an experience reading that book haha
Glad to be back making videos again too!

I sometimes look at my most popular videos and mine turned out to be book reviews. In my case I think it's because I'm still a relatively small Booktuber and there'll be a ton of folk seeking reviews. I did indeed have someone contact me regarding a review once, clearly trying to get answers for an essay they had to write for some class - though I believe a few Booktubers have experienced that.
I recall some of your well-edited videos from a while back. I was quite in awe of them. However, I have absolutely no idea what sort of thing to say I'd like to see from you. I'm quite happy to watch whatever you put out - as long as you're enjoying what you're doing.

Haha yes it’s so funny isn’t it that review videos FEEL like they’re the content getting the least engagement when the reality is something quite different! I’ve got some review like The Tree of the Toraja that just didn’t stir anything at all really, but then others that really hit the ground running, it’s always interesting and seems to be a complete game of luck!
Thank you for your lovely comment, Charlie!! As always! Haha I feel like I would be terrible if people actually did ask for specific content and then I’d be like... well actually maybe I don’t fancy doing that exactly 😅😅 but I would be intrigued to see what people might miss from me! Like I know there’s a lot of kinds of videos I used to make but haven’t in a while!

This was really interesting! Sometimes videos just take off for seemingly no reason - but hey, if people come back to your channel, the more the merrier.

Hhaha yes exactly! I don’t think there’ll ever be a formula for what makes a great booktube video and that’s why it’s always so fun and creative making this kind of content 🥰

I honestly enjoy all your videos, because you are explaining your thoughts so well! But I especially enjoyed your recent 3 bad books and 3 good books review videos. You have a way to share your opinions on books you don't like in a way, that I don't think anyone is kept away from picking them up, but everybody can certainly understand what might be the issues with these books. Also you are doing the same with books you like, so that I'm interested in hearing your thoughts, even if I might be not interested in the book. And I like the format of three reviews in one video!

Ah thank you, so much Amelia!!
Yes I actually think I prefer giving three reviews in one video, it certainly helps me to give more direct and succinct discussions otherwise if I’m reviewing a single book I tend to just wander around verbally a little too much! Hahaha

Literature&Cinema is one of my favorites, but I'm biased because all your videos are my fav but also because of my studies :P
Same goes for the video on The Fortunes, but totally get what your saying with making it one video instead
My most popular video is also a review; of one of Ted Hughes poems and it has like almost 3000 views...which is just.... wow hahah, but from the comments and diving into the analytics I realized that a lot of people searched for reviews on it and I can definitely see that with Story of the Eye, because you know at the end of the day it's a classic, and exactly because it's not one of the most popular ones so there isn't a lot out there and also pretty experimental, so I can see people trying to understand it better. I do believe that reviews can blow up and become more popular outside of your subscribers
I think this is a very interesting thing to do with your own content and be able to find a balance between what works with viewers while also doing things that work for you too

Hahaha, I knew some of these would be your favourites. It does make me laugh though that generally within the BookTube community, we talk about how review videos are some the least watched videos on our channels, but then to viewers outside of the community it must be the most sensical option for them to watch because I imagine they just turn to youtube, type a title of a book and think "ah here's a review", hahaha, it's definitely good to assess your own channel and think about your viewers who are from outside of your own small circle!

This was very interesting to explore and hear your thoughts on! I know exactly what my most popular video is, it's a series reread review and if I'd known it was going to be so popular I'd definitely have put a lot more effort in to make it coherent 🙈The benefit of hindsight, eh!
I really do think you're onto something with these videos that end up being consumed wider than the intended booktube audience. I realise most of my top five are individual book reviews, which definitely have racked up views over time from people who are studying or just specifically looking for thoughts on that particular read.

Yeah absolutely! I enjoyed reflecting on these videos and it was fun to try and play sleuth as to how it happened hahaha it goes to show on the digital world you just never know!

I’ve been watching so many more films than usual this year - owing to the pandemic - and the rest of this year will see a greater percentage of content on cinema as a result. I’m currently trying to fill gaps in my 21st century viewing - just put Comet, The Hunt, Byzantium, Sunset Song and Synecdoche, New York on hold at the library.

Ah that’s fantastic, I actually had the complete opposite reaction during the pandemic, I couldn’t concentrate on films at all instead settling for kids’ cartoons to bring some distraction and joy to my own little bubble!! 😅

Sounds like films became for you what books became for me in the early stretch of the pandemic: an impossibility. I just could not concentrate on them - and am still having a bit of a struggle, if I’m honest. Films, though, proved the old reliable. The whole world just vanished when I’d find myself in the midst of a terrific movie. I think losing myself in movies at home has a lot to do, as well, with the fact that the pandemic has prevented me going to the cinema - this is already the longest period without sitting in a screening room since I was probably 12 years old.
