To be fair, Stan came out before the internet was a supremely popular platform and before other mainstream artists had created anything similar. It also came out at what could probably be considered the absolute pinnacle of his career. All of these facts kind of coalesced to turn Stan into a phenomenon. Also, don't forget, it release on the original MMLP too. Darkness hasn't gotten as much attention for one simple fact - while it is the best song of it's style, it's far from the first and only, and with how easy it is to find underground or non-mainstream rappers on platforms like TH-cam, stumbling across other "conscious" songs like Darkness is quite easy, even if they don't quite compare in terms of quality. I mean, look at Joyner Lucas' entire 508 album as an example of this. Or NF. Or if you're looking for someone more unknown, a rapper like Jeff Turner.
My ABSOLUTE favorite part about this song/video is when people finally realize exactly what Em has been doing the whole time. You can see the explosion of realization and respect for his craft go off behind their eyes.
Royce da 5'9" produced this song! Royce started to get into making beats a few years ago, and prior to releasing a whole album produced by himself, Em let him showcase his stuff on his Music to be Murdered By album. Another amazing Royce-produced song from that album is "You Gon' Learn" which I think you would enjoy as a reaction. It also features Royce.
I remember hearing this song for the first time and thinking "damn, Em is going through some real struggles and has intense anxieties before his shows" and then realize is was a double actually about the Vegas shooting.... I had chills through my whole body. This song is amazing and should be awarded, but because it points out a major issue in America it gets pushed aside and shoved in the darkness!
This is Em's *MASTERPIECE* - not just with his lyrical wizardry & double/triple entendres, but also the Simon & Garfunkel sample of 'The Sound Of Silence' (Hello Darkness my old friend.....). Next level GENIUS! Eminem started the ball rolling by using his platform to raise awareness and encourage change for the better, a HUGE risk, even for someone of his stature - yet TH-cam tried to bury it - WTF does that say about society today?? That's why the end of the video is important - asking people to register to VOTE and let your voice be heard! NOBODY needs an unlimited arsenal weapons, NOBODY! At least highlighting this issue is a starting point? I live in N. Ireland - born and raised in 'The Troubles'. The army was everywhere, machine guns were a non-remarkable thing cos they were an every day sight. Terrorist activity ruled our lives, along with an oppressive government regime. Bombs & bomb scares were so common that they became almost 'normal'. Thousands of innocent people were killed for over 30 years. I don't know anyone who hasn't lost family or friends simply for just being in the wrong place when a bomb or shootings occurred. Our so-called 'peace' is very fragile....I fear Brexit will see a return to our *DARKNESS* ....when will we learn?...☮️🕊️☘️

He's also talking about the duality of the person. The guy went from depressed and lonely to lonely and homicidal. Without a decision made, he decided to announce his problems into the world one final time before he goes. The cause of the problem starting from the same place. Loneliness, depression, not knowing how to handle it and just getting pills unmonitored to deal. Where were the people who would care enough to be there for him? What about the therapist who could have been his confidant instead of a psychologist to hand out pills? Where was the community he could have belonged to and could turn to when he felt overwhelmed? That's where we need to get to. That's what we need to strive for. And to the people that couldn't care less about the community around them unless it gets them somewhere. Hey MrLboyd!! Greetings from Brasil here. I know this is a hard topic to discuss in any place but I've wanted to make this point. In my country we've had a desarmament bill put out without our demands in 2001, since there all the civils lost their power to get a weapon. what wu got was the highest crime rate of our history. in 2016 we had more than 60.000 murders with a gunfire. We also have some of the biggest drugs traffic rates in the world. I'm not saiyn that guns wold solve our problem, but we had much lower crime statistics before. Not to mention that we have some of the most corrupt politcs and judges in the world. I wish aI could be able to defend me and my familly from thhose people..

This is a Hip Hop guy who felt the need to create a social commentary immediately after another horrific mass shooting in America. Who does that? Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen AND Eminem. G.O.A.T. for a reason.
Loving your reactions, but you have to let the videos completely finish. After it says, "When will this end?" It says, "When enough people care." Then it tells you to register to vote, which is a bold move by Em, though he's never been afraid to get political. Also, I'm sure you noticed, but the TVs were arranged in the shape of the US. This video and song are just an absolute masterpiece.
The voice singing hello darkness my old friend was juicewrld
This, this is why rap exists. To conversate instead of placate.
I love the fact that I’m from Iowa and grew up in Brownsville Texas. Got to learn about a whole different culture first hand and its amazing.
B-ville... nice
Great reaction. You got a new subscriber.
The best reaction EVER!!!
This song and video are his single greatest achievement, the GOAT.
AGREED! The whole song along with the video is an absolute MASTERPIECE!🐐
It's crazy that a lot of reactions thought it was about him performing at the beginning and then It's the "ooohhhh dang" moment
I’m glad that someone else other than myself finally caught the sound of silence sample in there?!?
I've been waiting for this one.
Lady's and gentlemen
He said the G word!!!
When this happened my dad was in the luxor hotel, I was in 5th grade and he was supposed to see the festival. they had to call my elemantary school to tell me and my brother he was ok. people are sick man. shit happens when you aren't thinking straight.
This is one of my favorite Eminem songs.
I love that he finally catches the Vegas show but still takes him so long to understand what em is doing if you give him suggestions give him a few Cliff notes don’t spoil but at least let him know what he’s getting into
This whole song is a double bro. Amazing lyrics by the GOAT
This song is amazingly written and executed.. while I personally disagree with his message, I can respect his talent. He’s just the best.
"Hello darkness" is sung by JuiceWrld here (sorry if I misspelled the name). So much easier to get copyright approval to use than the original song...
I've been WAITING for you to notice this whole thing was a double lmao the WHOLE thing. "You can't murder a show nobodies at" ik you would see it 😭
Kinda easy to see it's a double with that damn "trigger warning" in the beginning. So hate they put that on it, it destroys the full impact of the song and video.
