      It was such a long and wild ride. At one point the game kind of became a horse RPG when John went down the gallant skill tree.
      The game kept on presenting him with opportunities to increase the stats of his personal warhorse.

    • @epicurius1
      @epicurius1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@kexm9921 Well, as you and I know, although, of course there might be some people who don't, "Fabian tactics" is named after this Roman general named Quintius Fabius Cuncator, who was one of the Generals who fought Hannibal during the Second Punic War.
      Instead of just sending all his troops against Hannibal's in one big battle, because he knew he was outnumbered, he avoided big battles. Instead, he'd attack Carhaginian supplies, he'd find Carthaginian detachments separated from the main force and attack them, he set fire to crops so Hannibal couldn't get them and so on. So this got called later on, "Fabian tactics".
      Saying that Hannibal was a master of them is kind of funny, because he didn't use them, his enemy did.

    So, Jon, on the 1 year thing for Great Holy Wars, there's a difference between Directed Great Holy Wars (the one's done by Temporal heads of faith) and Undirected Great Holy Wars.
    Undirected GHWs can be redirected and give everyone 1 year to decide whether they want to join or not. In addition, they have the pitiful warchest to spread out amongst members.
    Directed GHWs cannot be redirected, trigger instantly, and make everyone decide whether they want to join at that moment. They also do not have the warchest.
    But ultimately, the biggest and most important difference is who the land goes to. In a Directed GHW, it goes straight to the Head of Faith (THIS IS MORE COMPLICATED THAN THAT, SEE EDIT 2). In an Undirected GHW, it goes to the benefactor of the person who contributed the most to the war (I think, I still don't know exactly the benefactor system works, but I assume it works similar to that way it worked in CK).
    EDIT: I want to point out that that guy with 68 prowess, once you count in Knight Effectiveness, is worth 17,680 damage, ON HIS OWN. And he has 1,768 toughness. That's roughly equal to 1,768 levies damage wise. And it's very well possible to get a LOT more Knight Effectiveness. Knights/Champions stronk.
    EDIT 2: A clarification. In Directed GHWs, the main title of the GHW does directly to the Head of Faith. The other titles get distributed similarly to an Undirected GHW. You contribute the most, your benefactor gets the most land in that new Kingdom.

    You need 3 armies
    The main fighting force - your knights and men at arms
    A beseiging force - your artillery and a few thousand levies
    The remaining levies - split into manageable sizes

    • @Paidraig
      @Paidraig 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd suggest 4 - send the mercenaries in first to soften up the enemy, then follow with the men-at-arms

    • @jeffextreme5498
      @jeffextreme5498 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would normally recommend four. One main fighting army with a fast commander. Four equal strength armies that can siege areas. It works really well for me.
      But... in this situation I think he should have had two main armies. Equally strong with ability to siege and good men at arms. Because of the enemy numbers.

    As someone who recently did 2 Restore Rome campaigns and had a ton of Great Holy Wars in Italy and Britainnia, you wasted too much time sieging during the battle. You should've focused on splitting and leaving a besieging army (with your canons) somewhere to not lose progress while taking your main army to attack anything coming to the shore. You can essentially decimate the enemy early on and have a real easy late war while they have no military strength -- instead you kept swapping sieged lands and ran out of supplies lol.

    • @globalincident694

    • @inventsable
      @inventsable 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@globalincident694 Yeah it is awfully optimistic, ha. I love Jon and he's the one who got me into CK to begin with, but man, lots of room for improvement. Part of me likes the chaos he creates, but another just furiously hopes that he'll eventually figure out there's actually a much easier way to do things. For example, Catholic Holy War against you? Just stand your armies two months early, split them so you have at least one unit on all the Pope's land by the start of the war -- now they can't spam. Siege and conquer without the Pope ever fielding a single army -- or if not, you cannot let the Pope constantly spam recruits. It was painful to watch Jon allow the Pope to field so many back in the last

    18:00 Curious how the game says that Hannibal was a master of Fabian tactics while it takes name from Hannibal enemy Quintus Fabius Maximus

    • @eoin2
      @eoin2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, but Fabius basically took the idea from Hannibal.
      "Constantly overmatched by better soldiers, led by generals always respectable, often of great ability, he yet defied all their efforts to drive him from Italy, for half a generation. Excepting in the case of Alexander, and some few isolated instances, all wars up to the Second Punic War, had been decided largely, if not entirely, by battle-tactics. Strategic ability had been comprehended only on a minor scale. Armies had marched towards each other, had fought in parallel order, and the conqueror had imposed terms on his opponent. Any variation from this rule consisted in ambuscades or other stratagems. That war could be waged by avoiding in lieu of seeking battle; that the results of a victory could be earned by attacks upon the enemy's communications, by flank-maneuvers, by seizing positions from which safely to threaten him in case he moved, and by other devices of strategy, was not understood... [However] For the first time in the history of war, we see two contending generals avoiding each other, occupying impregnable camps on heights, marching about each other's flanks to seize cities or supplies in their rear, harassing each other with small-war, and rarely venturing on a battle which might prove a fatal disaster-all with a well-conceived purpose of placing his opponent at a strategic disadvantage... That it did so was due to the teaching of Hannibal."
      Fabian tactics. Fabius didn't invent the tactics, he just copied them....
      And he won (well kinda), so there is that.

    • @XMarkxyz

      @@eoin2 I think this statement lacks an example of where and when di Hannibal used said tactics, who's the author of the quoted part?

      @@XMarkxyz Theodore Ayrault Dodge. Crossing the alps is pretty Fabian don't you think? But to be fair, nearly all of Carthage's victories involved the Numidian Cavalry using hit and run tactics. The battle of Cannae was Hannibal seizing a supply depot, he spent his whole time in Italy disrupting supply lines and avoiding pitched battles.

I played a tribal count from the early start date in my last save game. With a little bit of of jiggery pokery, 200 years later, every non Magic ruler in Europe/North Africa/Scandinavia and basically everywhere is just sitting there waiting for me to get a succession law that allows me to keep multiple empire titles, then they die. I have a kingdom title in 7 different empires.

      Ending shortly after dismantling the Papacy is too fitting and the series has gone on for long enough. Besides the end date is comming up soon.

    With a war as closely spread at two fronts, I'm thinking having two smaller armies might be more useful than one huge army.

    I'm really hoping you'll do another ck3 project! If you do, how about a suggestion: Since the ruler editor allows for you to create a ruler of any culture, try to start as a ROMAN count somewhere in Italy - and restore the Roman empire! (Had lots of fun doing this over christmas and would love to see you try it out)

    The whole "never wanted to be empress" thing is kind of funny, considering that Sweden actually had a Queen Kristina once (during the time of the Swedish Empire, so she could even have been called an empress).
    The real Queen Kristina chose to abdicate and convert to Catholicism (from Lutheranism).

    When you come back to CK3, there's some interesting decisions relating to reviving the Zoroastrian religion you might enjoy.
    I also had a blast playing as Mali in a custom game. Three high-tier gold mines right next to each other makes money no object, allowing quick expansion out of sub-Saharan Africa and sucker punching Islam and Catholocism.

    I think the sinful acts that lose you piety and devotion are the battles the game calls "slaughters", where you outnumber the enemy so heavily that it's no longer a fight, and just straight up mass murder, even by medieval standards.

    • @j2dragon109
      @j2dragon109 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Close, it is caused by the slaughters but it's a bug. When the numbers get too big the fame/devotion overflows and causes you to lose a level of it.

    Man, it's so frustrating how your allies are programmed. Surely if you're able to siege down one territory, and your ally is able to siege down an adjacent territory, your ally would siege down that territory instead of sitting next your army twiddling their thumbs. You should be able to set war goals for your allies to follow, this is just stupid.
