Fenix is a sport watch first and a smart watch second where the Apple Watch is the other way around. If you are not serious in sports ( and I don't mean counting daily steps) then the Apple Watch is for sure the better watch for you. But both are brilliant in their discipline.(in my opinion).
Keeping text notifications to my phone only was the best decision I’ve made with smart watches. I found that having that disconnect was quite enjoyable in the long run.
Fēnix definitely supports music on the watch! Spotify Bluetooth headphones done! Timers can be on a Hotkey, so on key press to start timer.

You didn’t use the Garmin 8 much apparently. Lots of your information is wrong. For instance, you can download music to the Fenix 8 and listen to music on a run without your phone.
When I had a Fenix 6 Pro I agree you could download music to it but it was a massive pain in the arse to do. You had to plug it into the computer, it took ages to transfer and with Spotify you had to have a premium account. Whereas the AW transfers what you want in the background whenever you put it on charge.
It’s very easy to transfer Spotify music to the Fenix 8. Sure, it doesn’t support Apple Music, but Spotify still has the majority of users anyway. I had the Apple Watch Ultra (gen 1) - I still do - but after getting the Fenix 8 43mm a few weeks ago, I find the Fenix to be far superior. The Fenix feels like a premium sports watch, while the Ultra has always felt more like a tech gadget than a proper training tool. Plus, the Fenix just looks cooler with some wear and tear, while the Ultra would just end up looking like a scratched-up computer. The buttons on the Fenix are also a game-changer, especially when training or in water. I missed them from day 1 after switching from the Fenix 6S to the Ultra. And since I have my iPhone with me 92% of the time, answering texts and calls is much easier on the phone anyway. Living in Sweden, I also find it super frustrating that the Ultra doesn’t support the Swedish dictionary, even though the iPhone does. Writing on the Ultra here is just annoying. The Apple Watch Ultra is now collecting dust on its charging stand, and honestly, I haven’t missed it at all.
It’s also quite a horrible experience syncing with Spotify and then it is out of date and needs to re sync. I only use my Garmin now if im going on my side by side in the middle of no where up north. For general activities and day to day the Apple Watch having cellular is just plain better now. If apple ever adds proper track me with mapping I doubt I will ever use my Garmin again.
Oh my gosh. You needed someone to explain for you this info. You can set reminders on the watch also. It goes to your Apple and will show up on your watch. Same as alarms. There is voice assistant and voice commands. You can have a button set up for voice assistant which is dedicated. You can say, remind me about my meeting at 2 pm” and it will do it and show up on your phone and your watch. I think someone should have explained all this to you or done some research. Yes, you’re correct about cellular.
@@scottmckennaYep. It sounds like you have to say everything you do to the Garmin. Apple has such sleek interface to let you also do it without words. And the rings…!
I have both the AWU 2 and the Epix pro, and 99% of the time it is the AWU2 that I wear, an amazing smart watch really, even though the Garmin is definitely the better sport watch
Wish it was that clear cut for me… I am a pretty hardcore athlete(or at least think I am) and yet I still want the user experience of the Apple Watch with the capabilities and focus of the Garmin. Haha
I think you didn’t use the watch long enough before deciding to go back to Apple Watch. I am doing something now and using Garmin. Just got done using it for a week. I am still learning how to use this watch (Forerunner 265). My quick conclusion that I can tell at this point is that HR monitor and sleep tracking is way better with Apple Watch during work out and sleep. I will be incorporating chest strap (H10) for work out.
I have suunto ocean, garmin descent mk3i and apple watch ultra. Now I have leave my apple watch ultra, because it is useless for my use and its battery sucks. I use daily for sport and diving suunto and garmin, which has better batterylife, than apple watch ultra, witch I must load once or twice a day.
Although I am a Samsung user, I watched your video to see if you will have the same reasons I had when I was considering the Galaxy Watch Ultra vs the Garmin Fenix 8. Your video is spot on. For me, the biggest deal breaker was having cellular connection in my watch and being able to do leave my phone at home when running or working out. Being able to make/receive calls, listen to music, audiobooks or podcasts (if I want to that day) from my watch while running or working out is liberating. The health / exercise metrics on the Ultra are good enough for most people. Excellent video, thanks!
Great video! I can agree I believe for most athletes who are more into significant tracking and using data to become better Garmin is the one to have hands down. I have both Fenix 7 and the first Ultra watch and the Apple is a great day to day smartwatch. But for my training days when getting ready for a marathon or when I love to get on the MTB for some enduro training the Garmin is the best and blows Apple out of the water.
Although some of your points are completely accurate, as some have pointed out on here, I with you. I had an AW 4 then changed to Fenix 6 Pro as I was doing a marathon and thought it would be good for the training etc. And it was. But that's about it. I missed the smart features. And before I get caned I know the Garmins aren't smart watches but in my opinion the AW is a better sports watch than the Garmin is a smart watch. Im a regular runner but like most I don't need all the bonkers features the Garmin provides. It definitely looks better than the AW but it's quite niche in what it can do for the average person. It was interesting to see how much it thought I had sweated during a run or how knackered it thought I was but they're all things that you just know anyway. I was seriously tempted to go back to Garmin from my AWU when the Fenix 8 came out, but when I was honest with myself it was only really because of the looks. I knew that after a few weeks Id miss the smart features of the AW. When it comes down to it buy what you want.
I agree. But what you want and that’s why I’m making this video to share my thoughts. I love the Garmin and if somehow they can get some more integration with the iPhone, I’d switch back in a heartbeat.
Here’s my daily driver enduro 2. Left hand AWU 2 black titanium right hand 😎🙌 Here’s what I love 2 months battery life with my enduro 2 not everyone likes daily charging multi devices so for me it’s a life saver Whilst awu 2 2 days than back to charge I can get 4 days if I disable some features sad but true but one I do use a lot Apple Pay and well completing apple rings 😅
I've never owned an Apple product, I have owned many Google/Android watches. I'm a Garmin convert. If you are serious about aggressive sports, Garmin is the only one. I urban skate. I've seen many apple watches get destroyed with the most minor falls. If you're serious about sports, Garmin is the way.
Last comment promise my biggest con I had with all previous AW after 1 year I checked my battery health it’s degraded ridiculous fast I don’t know from my experience but I tend to upgrade every year 😅 I guess it shouldn’t matter hehe but yh just pointing that out
It seems your primary aim for the watch is to replace your phone. I dont want a second phone on my arm. Theres also a lot of athletic tracking features Apple doesnt have. People who want a smart watch first and athletic tracking second would like apple more and people who value atheltic tracking and bio data more with smart watch second, the Garmin is a better fit imo. Also for me, I would never wear a device I have to charge every day which if you do a lot of gps activity ut sounds like the Apple will just about need it. Or every day/every other day... it was interesting to hear your perspective though.
