My speedlite had the same problem - only TTL or E in the panel. Now its fixed - Thank you! And yes its 10 years later now - I still shoot Canon vintage gear 😂
Thank you sooooo, much. I had this problem on a shoot today, had to shoot the entire session with NO flash - just used ambient light all indoor real estate photography. It was a killer. Thank you again!!!!
OMG! I thought I was going to have to get new flashes. I have no idea how this setting would have gotten changed, but I found your video when trying to trouble shoot and figured, well it's worth checking, and that was it! Thanks!
I just searched on TH-cam regarding 580ex ii not firing and was not so sure this would solve the problem, but turned out it really worked haha. Thanks a lot, man!
OMG I have been a Canon Speedlite owner since 2005. I have had this problem several times since I bought the flash. I even bought another just in case this happen while on a shoot. I could not figure out this behavior of the light and why it happens. I also had searched many times on the internet which yeilded an advising to take the batteries out to reset, but nothing worked. Thank you so much, this solved my problem I have had for many years and my was not confident with my flash. Always worried this would happen again. Thank You!
Fantastic mate, you're my hero lol. I have no idea how I actually got into this position in the first place, but for the life of me I could not work out why the High Speed Sync wouldn't work, but Aquila, this was the reason. Thank you soooo much. Enjoy your day :)
The TTL switch was such a bummer. Made me so frustrated while shooting. I looked like a beginner while constantly changing my settings after each shot. You saved me!
THANK YOU James!!! You have no idea how much I appreciate your post.

I have to thank you because my TTL (Canon 600EX) was firing a lot of light and I did not know the reason! Because of your tip I was able to reset the configurations and it is working properly now! Thanks!
Many, many thanks. This has locked me up a number of times with all of our 580EX's and I somehow end up clearing it somehow, but I never know how. Glad I found this and thanks for posting.
Thanks! it did the work for me. although I not sure why my 580EXII switched Fn5 by itself...probably bad communication due to dirt on the flash contacts.
Great.. I'm a pro photographer and many times this has happened on weddings and for the hell of Me I couldn't work out why ha ha .... But now I do... Great little video I'm sure your gonna save many people with this.😁
Sweet mate. Thank you for posting this. I was having this problem on my flash a week ago. Good to know that I didn't have to worry about getting a new flash.
@JamesBastablePhotography did the issue every reoccur? I had a similar issue but mine was on C.Fn 00-0, it was slow to recycle (so not firing for each photo) and showing TTL instead of ETTL (only noticed this today). From an online website I tried C.Fn 09-1 and it worked as expected, then tried your C.Fn 05-0 and it worked as expected. I decided to go back to C.Fn 00-0 and it's working as expected and now showing ETTL
I tried this with my 430EX II but it's still stuck in TTL. And I've noticed that zoom icon on the flash screen is blinking non stop. So I'm guessing that my flash might have a different issue. Can you help please?
I am so grateful. This video solved my problem. I was about to send the flash to repairs, but that would not do as I would be without a flash for about 3-weeks. Buying a new one is out of the question for the moment. Thank you!!!
What about fucking learn about the stuff you spend your money on? sending to repair? hmm, my car ran out of gas. i might just call the company/manufacturer about it... facepalm
Thank you so much....... have been struggling with this and thought I had to send my camera in for some possible expensive repairs but this solved the issue in seconds.
Yes, thank you. I had this problem today while shooting a wedding. Couldn’t find it online, but you helped me. Thank you!!! It just switches because of a wobbly shoe?
@@JamesBastablePhotography Thanks, gonna do that. Had the TTL problem yesterday again, but when I just wiggled it, it moved back to ETTL again. I’m definitely gonna tighten the shoe now.
Thank you! Mine did this to me while in the field at a mountain bike race and I missed some key shots. I was furious! But the question remains, how does it get there in the first place?
This may have to do with a loose connection somewhere, mine started doing it and I think I even caught it when it was a bit wobbly on the camera. Frustrating when it just wants to go TTL, bang full power and everything is snow-white :\
Thanks, you just saved me from sending in my flash! But the real question is, why does the 580EX II switch this custom function in the middle of a shoot?
THANK YOU!!!! I was about to buy a new flash or send it to Canon. I have actually been working with my terrible backup flashes because I thought it was done for.
My 430 ex II is actually missing numbers 3-6!! So I can't do the #5 thing. I was able to set the flash on the 430 ex II to the zoom feature and it somehow let me back out of the TTL to the ETTL. Go figure. But I think the fiddling with my flash watching your video helped me figure it out. So thanks for that!
You won't run into that problem if you have the ATG Gold MG8k Flash Kim X3. This is even better than using two Canon 600EX-RT. Has nine wireless flash modes. Transforms 430EX II or 580EX II into ATG wireless radio ETTL II. No overheating. No shutdown. James, nevertheless it's easier by using the on camera flash menu settings then pressing the 580EX II or 600EX-RT's buttons. FYI: That TTL is an ATG AutoMeter which is better than using ETTL II. Or using the ATG Auto modes as from the front sensor of the flash. Quantum QFlash & Metz flashes use ATG AutoMode. They're betterover ETTL/ITTL.
hi yes it did solve my problem, i bought a used canon 580 EX ii, and it was showing E mode, which was fn 05 2 i was bit worried and your video help me to change it back
i tried this on a 600rt and it worked until I pressed the shutter button and the flash unit switched back to TTL. If I try to use the menus from the camera(s) I tried with 3 different cameras - I get an error message on the camera display that tells me no flash unit is connected. Even weirder, i can put this unit as slave and the master can control it in ETTL mode. I have no idea how to save that problem
The problem Im having seems to be with the connection of my flash. Ive reset the flash functions on the speedlite and changed function 5 to 0. But when I went to my camera(5dmk3) and tried to alter the settings there it says theres no connection to the speedlite. Im assuming theres a larger problem for me and that the speedlites foot is "damaged" Hope that helps anyone in my shoes.
i have a similar issue with my 430 ex ii, it works fine on ETTL for a few pics and then goes to TTL and it overexposes... i think it's either the flashlight or the hotshoe on the camera
YESSSSSS...solved the problem...searched for hours then discovered you. You are a godsend. Thank you so much .
It was refreshing to see an informative video that was straight to the point without having to sit through a long wast of time intro.
Glad this helped Richard
Finally found the solution, custom function reset to ETTL. Thanks so much!

OMGGGG LIFE SAVER I NEARLY BOUGHT A NEW CAMERA I WAS ALMOST CONVINCED THE HOT SHHOE WAS DAMAGED!!
Thanks a lot, helped me solved the problem, getting my 580ex back to ETTL, I use it with my 80D.
OMG Thank you!!! This was such a pain and unfortunately I don't have a backup, so had to use camera's internal flash!!! So glad I found this video!!
Glad you got it fixed :)
Had that issue.... Wasted a day on the field. Problem solved thanks to you!!!

Thank you! Happened to me last night mid shoot on an event ! I was freaking out ! You made my day ! Thank you sooo much!

Thank for you commenting, glad I could help :)
I feel silly for benching my 580 for months and using the 430 when all I had to do was what you said. Thanks!!!
Very happy it worked out for you!
Thanks mate! Fixed my 600EX by just clearing custom functions :) Life saver!
Aalok Galappatti Great to hear! :)

You are the man ! This is my first time messing with these Speedlights. Did the trick after some random button pushing. Got it to work !
Brilliant. Was about to buy another second hand one because I had given up on this one... THANK YOU!
Oh James, you absolute angel! Thank you so much x
Thanks for the TIP, I thought my flash died. I am pretty sure I threw away my old 580EXII thinking the ETTL was broken.... haha
wow so many tutorials I have seen and this one has done in 2014 and this one worked. thanks for making such a great tutorial. Very helpful.
Thanks Zahid glad this helped you
Big shout out for this.... couldn't figure it out... only getting E setting no ETTL.. sorted... much appreciated ☺

Yes, thank you. I had this problem today while shooting a wedding. Couldn’t find it online, but you helped me. Thank you!!!
It just switches because of a wobbly shoe?
Not sure but glad you got it fixed! Tighten the shoe if you can, it's fairly easy to do I found out :)
@@JamesBastablePhotography Thanks, gonna do that. Had the TTL problem yesterday again, but when I just wiggled it, it moved back to ETTL again.
I’m definitely gonna tighten the shoe now.
I was close to send my flash to the service. Thank you so much!
Thanks James! I just had this happen on my Canon 600 ex-rt. Your tip worked like a charm.
Thank you so much. My flash was firing slow.. one shot and a 5-6 second wait to get it back. Got rid of that pesky problem.
Thanks, You saved the day. I was stuck in ETT!
Thank you sooo much!! I couldn't figure how to get into TTL hahaha. Just letting you know you're a lifesaver!
Oh my goodness! Thank you so much! I was about to chuck this flash just thinking it was going bad!!!!
Glad it worked Amanda
Thank you! Mine did this to me while in the field at a mountain bike race and I missed some key shots. I was furious! But the question remains, how does it get there in the first place?
Works on 600 as well. Thank you James!
Thanks for the comment, not sure why but hay! Now next time you can switch with no hassle :)
Thank you for the video James! Now I know what to do when this happens again :)
Thanks so much! For some reason the bodies weren't recognizing the flash, so I couldn't change it through the cameras.
Thank you for sharing James much appreciated..
Thanks James. Your help is highly appreciated...cheers.
Raj Bose Glad this helped Raj, happy shooting!
Thanks so much!! Never would have figured that out.
thanks so much very glad I found this.
THANK YOU!!!! I was about to buy a new flash or send it to Canon. I have actually been working with my terrible backup flashes because I thought it was done for.

You have to put your Camera in Manual Mode (M) to change these setting i think
Thanks, mine was stuck in Manuel.
Thank you! is there a reason why the info window on my flash will not stop flashing? Any help would help.
WoW! Thank You! Wasted a shoot trying to figure this out.
Problem solved! Glad this helped you out :) - Happy shooting!
Hi James my 430EX ii is showing the same problem but when I go into C.Fn I can only see 1,2 7,8,9,10,11,12,13 &14 any ideas?
Not sure on that one Alan. Have you managed to resolve it?
No still showing the same or not showing!
Has it recently changed? Might be worth making a video asking to see if anyone has had the same problem?
This one is actually accurate, thank you.
This was so helpful!! Thank you James :)
430 ex ii does not have setting 05 available in C.F menu... That's a bummer.. I've stuck on TTL with 430ex ii
Thank you. That was my problem, now fixed!
Thanks Belle, glad you fixed it!
