Actually Keanu Reeves was already a blockbuster star as Point Break, My Own Private Idaho, Speed, and Devil's Advocate, etc., all came out way before this film. Speed is what really put him on the map and made him a household name in '94. The Matrix is what made him a global superstar or leveled him up even more.

I'd hesitate to say he was a blockbuster star. In the 90s you could probably name 10-20 leading men who were bigger names than him before the Matrix.
      arnold schwarzenegger
      Sylvester Stallone
      Harrison Ford
      bruce willis
      brad pitt
      tom cruise
      denzel washington
      Nicholas cage
      kevin costner
      johnny depp
      robert deniro
      al pacino
      Pierce brosnan
      Michael Keaton
      val kilmer
      ed norton
      Liam Neeson
      Dicaprio had just done titanic
Speed was a big movie but it was just one movie and he didn't do the sequel

Surely it was his stunning performance in 1993s "much ado about nothing"?
Kenneth Branagh, Emma Thompson, Kate Beckinsale, Richard Briers, Brian Blessed and Denzel Washington all performing Shakespeare to the highest level of thespian standards. And then there's Keanu reeves in it too. Doing his thing. It has to be seen to be believed. Unforgettable.

I was in my late 20's when I saw this in the theater. The build up to the movie was intense. The commercials for it were little more then teasers. The one teaser that got just about everyone was the clip with the quote "free your mind" and the giant leap across to the other skyscraper. Then the line.... "Woah!!" from Neo. No one at the time had a clue to what the Matrix was until they saw the movie in the theater. It was a wonderful experience.

When the heart stops beating, you are still alive until the brain dies. That kiss may have reminded him that he only died in a dream world and he still existed in the real world. Additionally, with the chemistry between them, his brain may have allowed his heart to be jump started by it.
Nevertheless, with that scene I was more intrigued by what it accomplished-it fulfilled every prophecy in this movie: 1) Since Neo saved Morpheus, Neo had to die. 2) The one had to be born inside of the Matrix and he would disassociate himself from it, which he did-you know-after he died inside of it! And, 3)Neo wasn't truly the one until after he was born inside of the Matrix, so when Trinity realized how much she really cared for Neo when he died and kissed him, Neo's brain accepted the advance, simultaneously becoming THE ONE by being born inside of the Matrix, and thus becoming *the* *one* she was meant to fall in love with-the oNe and only, Neo.
But yeah, while this was overall an amazing movie with innovative visuals, the sequel has one of the greatest action sequences in cinema history! It has since been beat, I'm sure, but at the time, it was unbelievable and still is, in my opinion! And finally, while the third one concludes the trilogy pretty solidly, I still think the first movie takes the top spot for me.

    • @loucyx

Also, based on the lore of "The Matrix: Resurrections," "The One" is both Neo AND Trinity. They are two halves of a whole, wich, from my PoV is fantastic because it turns "The One" into the power of a relationship between humans, not the power of a single human.

The way I imagined it was that when he "died" in the matrix, he discovered the difference between the matrix and the real, and he could control himself in both. You can see his initial realization in the dojo, "You think that's air you're breathing?" But it took until his avatar died before he realized that he could actually ignore the impacts of The Matrix on his body.

Imagine that this one was released 1999. We had almost never seen anything like this, the slow motion the mystery behind matrix and the amazing choreography. There's a mini documentary somewhere in TH-cam that shows the process of making this movies. The cast were required to be able to understand and explain The Matrix, they read a lot of fiction and philosophical books. They really went all in that they decided to hire the Chinese martial arts choreographer and film director Yuen Woo-ping to work on fight scenes. The actors had to train hard for several months.

I was working as a projectionist at a theater. We received our weekly batch of new ads and trailers by delivery. I opened it and recognized everything, except a very short teaser trailer for "The Matrix". I attached a leader and threaded the trailer on a projector and played it by itself. I said, "what the fuck is this?" Then I watched it again. Then again. Then, being frustrated by the quick cuts in the trailer, I took the film to the splicer table, turned on the light and went through it frame by frame. I've seen the movie countless times and it doesn't lose anything. It only gets better.

Seeing you guys respond to scenes in this all these years later - the same way I did on first viewing - and not really have many issues with the effects, tells you how far ahead of the standard the Wachowskis were. Absolutely incredible.
The coolest element of this is the subtle statement that they make around the fact that when AI eventually does take over our existence we won’t even recognize it because it will already know it has to control our perception in order for us to accept it. We are already seeing that today. I also believe this movie for better or worse helped launch a lot of present day tech conspiracy theories.

Apparently no one really got the concept. Because if we turn the energy from the battery into money, and The Matrix into people's phones, where people believe they're living when really they're just allowing other people to live extravagant lives thanks to them wasting theirs watching artificial tiktok lives, or they're watching a big screen TV just to be convinced they need an even bigger screened TV, then this movie is already true. It's very meta to even watch it on a phone. And yes, I get the irony in even leaving this comment.

The movie was a technical masterpiece in 1999. But what made it really stand out was the deep existential idea for the plot of the movie. Many movie-goers struggled to get the plot. It is a smart plot. And because of that, I think The Matrix would never have been greenlit today -- movie studios don't want to take any risk whatsoever anymore in making blockbuster movies that can have too complex plots. I'm happy the edgy 90's brought us this movie.

There is so much to look into details-wise that they put into this movie.
You noticed the car ride. They shot the frame rate of the street outside the car at a different frame rate to inside the car so it didn’t “feel” right together but wasn’t different enough to draw *too much* attention to it
The fact that when Neo was at work his suit is the same as the Agents suits (right down to the yellow lining) because as you learn later in the movie, until you’re unplugged, an agent can become anyone
    That’s just two of many.

You acknowledged the reference between communication with God through the symbolism of the telephone, You alluded to the connection between the Trinity and Oneness with the believer, You referenced the connection between the blood of Christ and the red pill, The friction that emerges when a person begins to pursue things beyond the physical realm. You guys were on point, and it wasn't just one of you, every single one of you has something insightful to offer in your interpretation, And it wasn't just that it was insightful, it was accurate. Ultimately, Christianity is being "promoted", as into say, it's trying to tell everyone that Jesus is indeed God, and that the teachings of the scriptures that inform a person how to walk in faith and revelation, and even to perform miracles within their belief is all true.
The message of the films as a whole is that although Jesus is God, and God exists, and everything we've been taught in Christianity is true, because God still has control to either reward us for doing good or punish us for doing evil, we therefore cannot make any choices outside of his control. The choice between good and evil Also has a dualistic nature in that it also implies both free will and determinism at the same time, All of which is encompassed in the red and blue pill.
The message that they are trying to communicate is that instead of taking the red pill, or the blue pill, they are trying to combine both in order to create a "purple pill" which combines determinism and free will together in order to create a third option that is outside of God's system of control as a form of rebellion against him.
Therefore, It's some type of satanic belief system being promoted while also simultaneously admitting Christianity is true. This might be done in some sense through "gnosticism", but I think it goes beyond that.
This is why "the real world" in The Matrix Four is no longer called "Zion", It's called "I/O", which represents taking both the negative 🔵and positive 🔴 and combining them together to make the purple pill 🟣. It communicates that a person can tap into the supernatural both by applying the principles from the Bible and God and also applying principles from demonic sources and witchcraft to combine them together to make a rebellious system. There is even a scene in The Matrix 4 where Neo walks over the edge of the building, and just before this, you can see on the table near the crowd of people that there is a single pill with a red and blue capsule.

@@blanktrigger8863My response would be, "yes" and "no". In *The Matrix* films, there are intriguing connections to *Gnostic* themes. While some elements imply Gnosticism, there's more nuance at play. The overarching message is that Jesus is God, and Christian teachings hold true. However, the films also explore the tension between free will and determinism. The red and blue pills symbolize this dualistic choice.
Interestingly, the films propose a "purple pill" - a fusion of determinism and free will, challenging God's control. This blend of satanic rebellion and acknowledgment of Christianity adds depth. Notably, in The Matrix 4, the real world is now "I/O," representing the synthesis of opposing forces: negative (🔵) and positive (🔴), yielding the purple pill (🟣). It communicates that a person can combine principles from the Bible that are holy and pure and mix them together with darker forms of tapping into the supernatural like witchcraft, for example, in order to create a rebellious supernatural system.

Then there were about a dozen movies that people born after 1990 seem to forget from the 1940s to the early 1970s where AI either took control or the world was dominated by computers.

So... it was not True Love's kiss at the end, or rather, it was only from Trinity's perspective. You have to remember that Neo's journey as a hacker plugged into the Matrix becoming a hacker outside the Matrix that can "hack" the Matrix. Only 3 were shown to have superpowers: Morpheus, Trinity, and Neo. They were also shown early to be specifically well known hackers. Their "Superpower" is to rewrite the code of the Matrix. The "One" especially can do it consciously, at the end. His journey through the movie is to slowly realize that there is no spoon. At the end, Trinity is just the last catalyst to Neo realizing that the Matrix can't kill him if he rewrites the code. He was still alive. The body cannot survive without the mind, yet the mind is still alive. So, he was never dead.

    • @CorwinPatrick
      @CorwinPatrick ปีที่แล้ว +5

Specifically, I mean the kiss was a physicality that Neo felt, making him realize that he wasn't dead. The Matrix is artificial. It can only "convince" you through the rules that you accept as real, that you are dead.

And when Neo said to the Oracle, "I'm not the One," she said simply "Sorry, kid..." and something like "Maybe you are waiting for something, perhaps another life," which was exactly what happened, as Neo only truly becomes the One when he comes back to life in the final scene.

Belinda McClory initially was supposed to do only the scenes inside the Matrix, the scenes aboard the Nebuchadnezzar being made by another (indisclosed) male actor. But some exec asked to ditch the idea because he found it "too confusing" for the 1999's audience and she had to do all the parts for the character they turned as androgynous as possible

Hope you enjoyed your visit to Sydney, Australia. Outdoor scenes were all filmed there. 1) because it was cheap 2) because it was thought that a largely northern hemisphere audience (the main market) wouldn't see any landmarks they could recognize in the Matrix city-scape. With some clever camera angles and editing they achieved this. I grew up in Sydney and was fooled on my first viewing; on second and later viewings I can recognize some buildings. Also, if you look carefully in the very few down shots of streets, you can tell that cars on the ground are driving on the left. The 'girl in red' scene in front of the fountain was filmed at a famous spot in the Sydney CBD - Martin Place - a short walk to the Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House - but again, the camera angles and editing were done carefully so as not to reveal anything that would identify the location.

Not because of the VFX the music or the action but what this movie "really" is about. The waking up from the prison in our minds and seeing the world as it really is. Like they also say in the movie its hard to explain, you have to see it with your own eyes. The eyes you never used before. There are so many details in this movie most people dont even notice and there are people doing like 6 hour videos trying to explain some parts of it.

I think most people get the analogy. The problem is, no one can agree on what the "red" pill really is. Everyone is all divided on what it is. I have my own beliefs, which I believe to true or approximate truth, but they differ even from people I believe are mostly on my side. And in some ways my beliefs are very close to those who would think they are nothing like me at first.

    • @mucxlx
      @mucxlx ปีที่แล้ว

@@Biggiiful I beg to differ, most people dont get what the red pill is although it is clearly stated in the movie. "Its the truth and nothing more", nobody said you will like it. And its true in reality too, its actually devastating realising what the matrix is in reality and seeing everyone enslaved and cheering for it.
So what is the matrix?. "Its a system", "its a prison for your mind". Its the absolute believe of people that there has to be a control system and countries and politicians and you have to pay taxes and have a ruler who can tell you what you can and cant do. And i see all those people arguing which system they want in the future and which system is better or worse. Not getting the point that every system is the same and that there can only be freedom without a control system.
I see so many people today talking about all the conspiracys in the world. They see all the crimes of the politicians and all this money grabing. And they talk about having the red pill but are very far from it. Most of them still truly believe that there must be a matrix or the world would not work. Otherwise it would be anarchy and chaos. And this is just indoptrinated into everyone from childhood on. And in the movie they even talk about not freeing people over a certain age because they might go mad or something and refuse it. And this is mostly true too. The older the people the more they hold on to this government believe. And if i think about it: The matrix is basicly government. When you see neo wake up in his pod next to millions of other people and when you really understand this picture then you know what the matrix is. That everyone is born into bondage and a slave.
And the cool thing is after that you will also more and more see the matrix code. And you will realise that you dont have the capacity to visualise everything and know every little detail. This costs just too much energy. But if you see only the code its all you need.

Neo wasn't brought back to life by "true love's first kiss." When a person's heart stops beating, there's a few minutes of dwindling brain activity before they die, so you can still hear things as your conciousness fades. Neo heard Trinity whispering to him, reminding him that his death wasn't real. Additionally, there is a fan theory that the cookie which the Oracle gave Neo was actually a software patch that activated when he was revived. Basically, for Neo to become The One, he had to enable cookies.

Star Trek in the 1960s had episodes where AI took over societies on planets they had visited, and then it was repeated again with Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1978, although 2001 Space Oddessy came before, Hal was NOT on the level of Vyger, who had been modified by a machine planet after falling into a black hole and being returned to find the creator, which ended up being mankind, but at first the AI assumed its create on Earth had to be a machine.
I saw this the date it was released in 1999 at age 31, and it was like Star Wars in that it changed how movies were made in the future. The Animatrix precedes The Matrix Reloaded, and watch for Enter The Matrix clips from the video game that precede The Matrix Reloaded as well, and then you have The Matrix Reloaded. On the Blue Ray set they have Return to Source: Philosophy & The Matrix where Philosophers and Theologians are interviewed about the metaphysics and religious imagery in The Matrix Trilogy and it's an hour long and very good to watch.
In 2000, I bought the VHS for The Matrix, and then in 2004, I picked up the entire trilogy and The Animatrix on DVD and would watch all of them weekly until 2008 until I finally put the DVD set down for about a decade before watching it again!. In those days, I could not stop watching during those 4 years, because it kept my mind thinking, and I could not stop thinking about what I was watching, and each time, it seemed as though a new revelation occurred. It is the most thought-provoking Trilogy of the 21st century!

When I first watched this in cinema in 1999, it blew my mind! On such a multiple tiered level I didn't know what was going on. First of all, it was the first film I was taking my high school sweetheart to, so I was mostly focused on making a good impression not having my mind blown by a once in a generation film. Secondly, the film felt so far from where we were at the time, it resonated with the echo of the 1990s general vibe: cold war is over, anything is possible, let's go meet aliens!. You also have to understand that just 1 year earlier the film everyone talked about was Titanic with Leo di Caprio and Kate Winslet (this was in 1998!). Titanic made kind of sense as it was a big historical drama but then imagine being followed up by The Matrix, it has literally blown our existence up ever since.
I am now in my 40s and the other day I saw this film on Turner's Classic Movies! I felt so old, it crushed me! My old highschool sweetheart is my wife, we have two kids, and I feel soooo OLD!
