- Are you a young musician looking to start a band? Maybe a guitar player, drummer, singer? Here's a few tips that I have to get you going on your journey to playing rock n roll music.

Punk Rock 101 is a video podcast series designed to help musicians, specifically playing rock music, on their journey. I have (and continue) to be a DIY musician that has toured the country, played major festivals, recorded a ton of music, as well as been a music teacher for several years. This is my way of sharing some of my experiences as a musician to hopefully help others on their journey.

Just wanna let you guys know, this is possible with this advice. I’m a guitarist and a singer and I’ve always been a big fan of Skiffle. I’m British (obviously), and it’s mostly a dead genre here. But I found a bunch of people who wanted to revive the genre. I met a drummer and we made a bass with a wooden box. I also met this guy who can play really good lead guitar. So now we do talent gigs around Manchester, and I’ve never been happier. I’m year 11 (or sophomore for Americans)

I’m 17 years old, have had played guitar and singing for a 3 years and currently trying to start a pop-punk/melodic hardcore band. Hopefully I can a lead guitarist, bassist, and drummer soon.

Im a Bassist, I met some guys a year or so ago, the Guitarist is the oldest of us, me and the Drummer are the same age, we don’t have a lead singer though, it’s just the three of us, I want to play more fast paced high tempo hardcore punk, the guitarist has similar wants too, the drummer doesn’t care, as long as it’s music for him, there’s no live music anywhere here, and the only band around is us, there’s two or three local bars that we’ll try to play when we’re all legal age to do so
That's rad, keep at it. Definitely consider having someone start to try and sing a bit, I think it may be a fun challenge and you may realize you don't need a singer. Also, I recommend trying to throw a few of your own shows! Your backyard, your school, a park, wherever you can. Never too early to start. Don't stress waiting to turn legal age
how did you meet them? I really desperately want band members but not everyone here is talented in music or take it seriously.

My friends play violin & edm pad, trumpet, my brother's tryna play a ukulele he bought from 5 Below, my sister's tryna play a keyboard also from 5 Below, I have a guitar that's too small for me, and my singing voice isn't the best it could be. This oughta be an interesting band lol 😂

@@bean.774 I appreciate the support, but I've lost both of those friends, my brother (IcyFierce) formed a band (Dividend Duo), my sister has other interests, and I'm working on a solo project and potential band with my cousin. Darn, a lot has changed in 5 months lol 😂

@@janajusimi269 8 months later, I've lost those friends, my siblings have other hobbies and bands, my band with my cousin fell through, and I've got a new electric guitar. I'd love to make something like that work down the road, though! Lol 😂
This is some pretty good advice. My friend and I both play guitar while I sing and right now we are looking for a drummer for the band. Its been a bit hard because our old drummer in our old band moved away so now we just have to start fresh which Im okay with its just going to take a bit to get started. Thanks for the advice Im gonna use it to see if I can find a drummer maybe even a bass player. (We might do a sleater kinney type of thing because of the lack of bass)

Very helpful dude! I’m 16 and I want to start a metal band. Have you done any videos about singing and being a singer?
Heck yeah that’s awesome!! No videos on that yet but maybe soon. My best advice would be to practice just finding your own voice. A lot of time (especially with beginners) people tend to imitate others and that’s not always the best approach. Learn what your voice is capable of and work on those parts of it. Don’t ever force yourself to sing in ways that you just can’t. I’d love to have a voice like Rob Halford, but the reality is, I can’t sing like that haha. So i dont focus on that. Hope that helps!

my dad was in a jazz band and now his son (me) wants to start a punk rock band i am a total disapointment
i actually know a few people in school with same interests in music, they actually play instruments, are interested in starting a band (overheard a convo lol) and they seem so damn cool to hang out with n stuff but my dumbass has social anxiety :') (gotta put myself together fr)
As someone who is in the same situation and won’t ever do anything about I’ll just give mindless advice.
So you’ll probably never talk to them after you graduate or even in a year or so, so just try it out, they laugh you out then you dodged one hell of a bullet. Most people aren’t assholes and if they’re in need of what you got then go for it. They’re probably too scared to go and ask around too, so just go up to them and say you heard they wanted to set up a band and you play an instrument. Done and done, hopefully it works out. 💪
What if you have no friends
I have a singer (me) and a drummer
But I have guitar that I’m 50/50 to learn but if I do I need a bassist so starting from idk tomorrow ima go to school and see if I can get one
In my junior year of high school currently in a band and well our singer/ bassist ( lead guitarist/ bassist left recently) did pretty well at this finding people around our school who can play instruments finding a amazing guitarist,drummer,keyboardist and me who might be the only dj in my school and he bought a mixer and some speakers and we go to his house every Wednesday and it’s been fun and if you can join a band it is fun

I’m a freshman in high school and want to start a band, I got some of my friends into Metallica, one friend in particular wants to play drums in a band but my main instrument is drums, I also know how to play guitar but do not own one, should I see if he is interest in me teaching him drums and then me playing guitar in a misfits/ramones cover band?

So, i play guitar and i’m 15 and a sophomore and there is no bands around me but i have two friends that play guitar and bass, But i wanna do like a stoner metal queens of the stone age type sound, but they are into a metallica type sound. Is that a red flag?

I don’t have any friends that play, I live in SC so not much rock here. You got any advice on starting out and finding people to play with?
Just get together and do whatever tf you want. Maybe swap styles together and see if anything sticks or just jam together.
Maybe try making your own genre like medieval rock

i search temong to create songs , wwritera singers. I have created 3 great drum beats and bassline song tracks and will need singing to them. I will put the tracks online, i make positive pro dance and guitar song tracks. And purpose is to fun way make money also
