  • The Good Shepherd Mausoleum made its debut on my channel 3yrs ago. At that time, the decaying mausoleum was on the verge of being abandoned. There's lots of sadness and unfortunate circumstances that surround this location. Two years later, in 2019 I returned and shared more updates. Now, in October of 2020 we see what the Abandoned & Decayed Mausoleum looks like today. Unfortunately, the future of this property and the remains that are at rest here are bleak. So come along with me as we revisit and see the condition of the Good Shepherd Mausoleum. Enjoy

My uncle is buried there, in the lawn part. Long story, short. The original owner died. Property ended up backed up on taxes. County sold property at a tax auction with no disclosure it was a cemetery. Someone from Florida bought it thinking it was abandoned land. They found out after buying it, that it is a cemetery/mausoleum. They refuse to repair, It has been on the local news dozens of times. I personally tried cleaning it up, its too much for one person. I also got covered in ticks. Wish I could do more

When you say "city" you are talking about working class taxpayers ! It is not the problem of the "city" This is not a city or county owned mausoleum and cemetery. This is private property.

@@texasborn2720 you are right they need to go to the state funeral and cemetery board they handle everything from licensing of funeral home staff and cemetery staff from top to bottom. They can also take over a cemetery and mausoleum and also funeral homes and crematoriums when needed it just takes family of people interred (buried) there to get together and approach them. The cemetery where one of my Uncles is buried had similar circumstances happen and they had been owned by a corporation and sold and the new owners embezzled all of the perpetual care money that had been paid in and then abandoned the cemetery. We had around 40 families I think that went to the funeral and cemetery board and they took over and now it’s back being took care of the lawn and the mausoleum.

@@maryhintonarmbrust709 I feel bad for you. But when you say "state" you are still talking about working class tax payers. Your story sadly is not unique. TH-cam is full of videos of falling apart mausoleums. I understand if new owners stole endowment money. Ands worse they them self died. And the deceased or the family paid for the space. But that is still a private matter. I just don't support the taxpayer to be on the hook for a private matter. However I DO support legislation that mausoleum buyers should be told up front that any structural issues that might arise that they and or family are responsible for repair or reburial. That way, a person or family will have to think very hard and think twice before they decide to purchase a mausoleum vault. And I support legislation for proper overall and especially roof construction of new Mausoleums. It seems mausoleums damage always starts from the roof. My parents are ground buried. I have a ground burial plot for myself. And with my purchase some of that goes to endowment fund for grave upkeep. Basically grass cutting. But should any issue arise I don't expect or think it is right for taxpayers to pay for it. And frankly mausoleums are very expensive to maintain. And I think mausoleum endowments are underfunded deceptively to make them cheaper to buy.

The best option for many in the Mausoleum would be removed and buried someplace right on that property and use the vault stones as ground markers. Tare the buildings down save the stained glass for maybe a small memorial of what once stood there. Probably the least cost effective way to get that mess cleaned up before Mother Nature exposes anyone.

Perhaps it matters to us the living to care. This 6 acre site could become a park with an attached cemetery. The areas with the in ground burials can become used as an active cemetery. The.mosoleum needs to be raised (demolished with the materials removed after the remaining bodies are removed. Those unclaimed can be buried in the ground burial section.) Yes some group needs to step up and become leaders to help the community to correct this neglect. Hopefully the community isn't dying too.

    • @herblapp6134
      @herblapp6134 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Many cemeteries die as we do. There are several comments that speak about that. Many great cemeteries were started in the 19th century like Laurel Hill in Philadelphia. Society was making major technological advances but very little in medicine were death was a common visitor in families. That's part of why several major cemeteries were started. Laurel Hill, now an integral part of Philly, was in the rural boonies when started about 1830. It still exists but it challenges the concept of perpetual care. At that time Philly was expanding and 18th century cemeteries were closed in. Mzny of their sponsors besides family of the deceased had ceased to exist. Many were closed and graves relocated. A bunch more got lost in redevelopment. Today it's not unusual to find these lost burial sites when the water company has to dig to replace old water lines. Laurel Hill is huge containing many beautiful monuments that are sern as very esthetic objects of art and history. They rely on a cadre of volunteers that complement the paid grounds keepers. Smaller, more remote cemeteries like this one are more vulnerable. I said in a comment it's us the living who should care; but there will always be some cemeteries that fail. Even church sponsored or owned ceneteries fail when the congregation moves away abandoning the graves due to lack of money. Eventually society in an array of ways dispositions them. It would be helpful to know the general region or area this cemetery exists to help facilitate a possible plan of action. I know he can't be too specific to protect it from unscrupulous desecrators.

@@gregdowle8031 yes, people die. Their loved ones die. However, if you own a funeral home there should be someone that is designated to take over once the owner has passed away or too old to continue. Millions of people have businesses that have been passed down from generation to generation. The person who bought this place last and was made aware that it is a cemetery should have kept the place up or sold it to someone who would be willing to do the job properly. This is terrible and yes people do care.

@4:20 those stains are most likely old leakages of embalming fluid or body fluids that came from some exploded casket. It seems that mausoleum didn't have good ventilation either, because as you might know, some people have been buried in sealed caskets, and with decomposition, the dead body releases gases, and in a sealed casket, those gases build up in the casket and it comes a moment where it explodes, and if the masoleum didn't have good ventilation system, it causes the embalming fluid and/or body fluids left to leak. Not that its a common occurance, but it happens, especially if the masolueum wasn't built with good ventilation and drainage system, which seems to have been the case here.

Honestly, this is one reason I feel that cemeteries and mausoleums should be funded through other means and NOT be privately managed. At least with, say, government funding some sort of upkeep can be done. But this is also a good example of why privatizing cemeteries and mausoleum doesn't always work. I mean when someone dies, the family pays a sum of money for the burial, but expects that the site their loved one is buried in, to be maintained for eternity, or at least until the last relative of the family passes away. But for some families, that could be hundreds of years. This is personally why I think some other method of management, either funding from the government (either federal, state or local) through tax dollars might help prevent more of this from happening. After all, right now, many of these are just businesses. There was a story about another one (years ago) that fell into disrepair after the owners passed away, didn't have much of a fund set up for management of the place after they died so it fell into disrepair and eventually because the scene of grave robbing and vandalism. That or the law needs to mandate that people be cremated unless their religion specifically forbids it (many religions permit cremation) or it's just simply not part of the religion (or rather, what you have done with your body when you pass away).

PA has laws that abandoned cemeteries upkeep become the responsibility of the township or city in which it is located. However, there is little to no enforcement of it. Look at Mt Mariah near Philadelphia, as well as one on the Homestead-Munhall border. Heck, I just appraised a home and used a comparabke where the mowing of the attached small cemetery goes with the deed. The best cemetery is a newer one in Penn Hills near Pgh where there are no grave liners, wooded or cardboard coffins so people can go back to nature.

Hi JP, that was beautifully filmed and narrated, Thankyou so much for sharing. I’m in the U.K., and am completely in the dark as to how a mausoleum property with obvious human remains still in situ can be left to fall in such a terrible distressing state, without input help from the government. I feel so sad to think these people saved up to pay an awful lot of money for a place they thought would be their last resting place, and now that money spent counts for nothing it seems, and neither can a loved one join them as planned with it being closed....what a muddle!!!.
I have never understood how it appears private individuals, or consortiums or whatever can buy up large acreage over there and get permission to have a mausoleum built, without being overseen by church? Government?
Either way, do you think it too far gone to do a “Go fund me” or whatever it’s called to raise money to restore? I’m a pensioner, and apology’s for my ignorance and naivety on all these matters. As you say, it’s such a lovely peaceful place, away from traffic, and set in The midst of nature, mature trees etc. I noticed too, several graves outside marked as those of soldiers passed , and with metal markers and flags. Would the military or who they served with, possibly help with any funds? Ok...I’m clutching at straws now probably, but with damned covid and being too far away it’s not feasible to do car boots, or table top funding , but I hope and pray these poor souls do find permanent places of rest,
Perhaps you would be kind enough to update us in future months if your able please? Thankyou again. Stay safe! Warm regards, Helen 🙋‍♀️😘💐☕️☕️🙏🦋🦋🦋🦋

Green burial is nice. Cheap. Safe. Environmentally friendly, even. None of this in 20 or 100 years.

JP thanks for the update, I have been following this story since the first video, it is still very sad, I cannot believe this Mausoleum is still standing, I have to say it is a pretty small Mausoleum

For it's size, you'd think they would figure out a way to fix up the property, but no one wants to front the bill.

I would clean up inside a little. Move the chairs, sweep. Wish I lived nearby

I remember this place from previous videos. Its a very sad and disturbing sight to see. It turns my stomach to see this mosuleum in such poor condition. Something should be done to start a go fund me account to help restore this final resting place. This unfortunately has happened here in my area as well. 🥺🙏✝️

I would love to donate to Chris who’s taking care of the families to pull more people out of there.. my family owns a funeral home & this is too close to home (I’m in PA also).

My husband and I are part of a 5 person committee who take care of a cemetery one of our city's VFW's purchased through eBay. The original owner was one of the original funeral home directors in Spokane. When he died it went to one of his family members who neglected. She lived in Las Vegas and when she died it fell into serious disrepair. We're slowly getting out back into shape and have had two actual funerals of U.S. veterans this year. We also had a pair of twins buried there a few years ago.
We're still having issues with people dumping garbage, tearing it up some, and riding dirt bikes through it. Once in a while we end up with homeless people living in it.
So, with all this said, my husband and I have become the grounds keepers and have gotten to be on a first name basis with our local sheriff and police departments through Crimecheck.

I don't understand, why is it abandoned??
Don't they have a duty of care to maintain it?
They accept people's money & then disappear?
You mentioned others that are abandoned too.
    That is heartbreaking
