how have i not listened to this recording before? I've known this piece for some years now. There is something about this recording... a certain softness and delicate nature of it. It's very pleasing. This choir was very good and led by an equally good conductor. Thanks to the organist of course as well.
Certainly was, Paul 😊 I remember doing this recording. I think the verse trio section had a couple of us per part. I was doing the second treble part. 🎶 Looking back over 40 years, we sounded pretty good really😊
I used to own this cassette and so pleased to have rediscovered this recording. Not only is it one of the most expressive renditions of this anthem, but it reminds me of the days when I worshipped from time to time at Ripon Cathedral just before I started training for ordination at Chichester.
Thanks for sharing this ! This is maybe the best anthem we have from S-S Wesley, and besides the good interpretation and recording quality, the quite ideal acoustics is well rendered.
The picture above does not relate to Ripon Cathedral, which is, as you say, glorious, but pre-Reformation. Thank you for your comment about the Choir, which, if memory serves me correctly, was directed by me with the late Ron Perrin at the organ.

Brings back many memories of very special times as proud chorister parents. What a wonderful choir this was. And still a very proud parent.
That's me singing the treble in the solo section 🙂

I am delighted you have rediscovered the recording which is particularly fine

It is a particularly good performance, hence our sharing it.
Glorious a Cathedral --- Rococo I believe. Equally splendid a choir.

It was indeed and this is one of the finest performances of 'Ascribe Unto the Lord' to have been recorded.
Sorry if you thought the picture was of Ripon cathedral - we dont always match the music track to a picture of the actual building.
That's extremely kind. Thank you.
Outstanding in every respect!
