Apologies to the people who "disliked" this performance. We try hard to include only those tracks that will be appreciated by a discerning public. At the same time, thank you to those who "liked" it. May you always be in the majority!
Well, let me add my voice to those "like" this performance. Why one wouldn't, I can't fathom. We are a young Anglican church in North Vancouver Canada; I am thrilled to find such a fine example to teach us truly beautiful chant.
Do what pleases God. Please don’t worry about people. I know this sure is a blessing to be able to listen to a Psalm from the Bible. May God bless you all
My mother was born and grew up in Guildford ,left the UK in 1964 . Suffered many decades of illness and mental anguish ..left us eight years ago ....rest in peace !!! Martin
It is eternal listening to this wonderful chant. I appreciate the choir. I thank those who share this message. The Lord will continue to bless you with His peace. Amen! I say well done to the Church of England for chanting these psalms for the world to worship our God.
Unhurried, graceful; reflective of the timelessness of a true scripture; and diction that is crystal clear. Hearing Anglican plainsong moves me into a dimension of prayer and reflection. Telling as it does a calming and eternal truth.
sadly we have few organists who can play the chant timings now so for many churches they are no longer able to be sung. let us hope this will change because there is real power from singing Scripture.
Don't be too sad. I'm Jewish. We've had to adapt to the changes we chose (and didn't choose) for 2200 years or more, depending on how you reckon. You've got a kind of roll with the punches, from our perspective. Here's my prescription: music.th-cam.com/video/vVGlPZCWUKs/w-d-xo.html&feature=share
In 1967, the choir went on tour for the first time, singing services in the cathedrals of Coventry, Lincoln and Peterborough, and ending at King's College, Cambridge, where "visiting choirs" were only rarely permitted to sing. Recordings made at most of these services can be found on ArchivesofSound.
some might find this a little slow, but u can understand every single word. Anglican Chant is peculiar to Britain Americans try to perform it but usually fall short.
Its just inspiring, and the chants are soothing too. God works so well in us when we cooperate with him. Thanks to the composers of these chants and a big thanks to those who uploaded it. A great thanks to the authors of these psalms who equally have taught us how to pray
I am going to pin this to my iPad for Morning Prayer! It lifts me right off my feet! Actually, I am already lifted up by my Lord, but you surely get the point.
My favourite psalm. Thank you for uploading it. The psalms are great but there's something about hearing them to music, as was originally intended, that is so beautiful.
You make a good point, although one wonders what the Ancients would have made of Anglican chant... But perhaps it does catch some of the original spirit of the texts, after all. Very glad you enjoyed this one and hope you'll listen to the others on this channel.
Oh I like the simplicity of the Anglican chant, it takes nothing away from the words but its still beautiful. I'm not such a fan of the Middle Eastern styles. I will listen to more as well.
Please send me all your collections. This is a tip of the ice berg of what heaven is gonna be. This is sweet to the ears and good for the soul. God bless you
perfect Barry Rose sound as i remember on my visits to evening song at the top of the hill, in the late 1960s. happy memories and thanks.Mark Pursey from st Pauls Nork,Banstead.
The Anglican choral tradition, as sung in an Anglican cathedral, using the Book of Common Prayer is a match for anything on the planet, for those of any religion or denomination, or none. That said, as you say, much of the rest is a horrible abdication and dereliction of a unique heritage.
What can I add to the comments below? They have just said it all. Thank you so much the first AOS video I uploaded by the way... Guildford Cathedral Choir in King's College Chapel can't do better than that!
29th May, 2017: listening to the old favourite yet again! At the conclusion of another epic playlist which I think I actually suggested to AOS that they upload and THEY DID!! THANK YOU AOS, GCC and DR ROSE (I STILL THINK HE SHOULD BE KNIGHTED AND I KNOW NOT EVERY 1 WILL AGREE WITH ME...)
I've got to acknowledge my sister and brother-in-law they gave me this phone as a Christmas present! I've already listened to the Boyce recording can't even remember its title and Byrd's "Mis Erere
Beautiful, lovely and inspiring. I really enjoy it, although I am Catholic. I also think that there should be written 'He' instead of 'he' in the text in the description.
+Kasia Kabacinska Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the comment. We tend to stick to "he" instead of "He" to make it more readable, though you're probably right.
There is nothing like Anglican chant. The English has a sinewy vigour, compactness and range that modern Psalters - in English at least - just do not have :(
Most of the recordings that you have posted are from the period soon after the Cathedral was consecrated, when the new Cathedral's choral tradition was in full bloom. I am curious to know whether that glorious tradition has continued to the present day? Or has it faded, with our changing times? Like so much that was precious.
The tradition has continued but of course with different personnel. You can hear recordings of the choir since Barry's time on the channel of the Archive of Recorded Church Music (th-cam.com/channels/oJLDKYk8C9b0_32eNHJf0w.html). The best way of hearing the choir in its current form would probably be via BBC radio's "Choral Evensong" or by buying a recent CD.
You're right. It doesn't seem to work as a direct link, yet it is the URL from our home page (see under "Featured Channels"). For some reason, it seems to be impossible to follow a link from within a comment. But you should get there via our Featured Channels section, or by searching TH-cam for "Archive of Recorded Church Music".
It doesn't work like that. There is no "Partitur". We used the St Paul's Psalter (from which the words and pointing were taken) and learned the music of the chants by heart. Most of the chants used at Guildford in those days are listed at anglicanchant.nl/books/book068.html and some of them doubtless appear in printed chant books, some of which are commercially available. This particular chant is listed at anglicanchant.nl/chants/2827172423.html, which shows you in which chant collections it appeared. But note that not all of these collections are on sale.
Apologies to the people who "disliked" this performance. We try hard to include only those tracks that will be appreciated by a discerning public. At the same time, thank you to those who "liked" it. May you always be in the majority!
this video has become a part of my daily prayer life. Thank you for uploading this gem.
It is well done!

This is heavenly...and to think this was done in the 60s. So blessed that I could still listen to this in 2016.
+Shittu Sadiq Thanks for your kind words. You've expressed the whole purpose of this channel rather neatly. Anyway, glad you enjoyed it.
Beautifully and reverently sung. Anglican worship at its best.
Thank you.
My father loved this particular Psalm 84. Can still remember him chanting with his Tenor voice.

Psalm 27.... 😇
Wonderful! Although I converted to Catholicism several years ago, Anglican chant is still what I think of when I think of church music.
+Randy Moore Glad you liked it. Luckily, music often bridges the apparent differences between the various strands of Christianity.

Acapella works with grace and is sonorously beautiful. The organ nicely accompanies, but is not necessary.
My favorite psalm. Sung so beautifully, so beautiful.
Thank you!

I come back to this video again and again. The performance is so beautiful.
Thank you. It was perhaps one of the choir's better performances.
It's beautiful Praise the Lord

Benedict Ayo Thanks for your thoughtful words. They do say that God moves in mysterious ways; even via TH-cam, it seems!
You are soooo right
I Love this and keep playing it - it Stays with me all day long - beautiful - I have shared it with others.
Mary.
2018 February.
Seeing that psalms are supposed to be "boring", we're quite surprised how popular our psalm tracks are. There are quite a lot of them on this channel.
Lovely thank you
You're very welcome, and glad you enjoyed it.
I am going to pin this to my iPad for Morning Prayer! It lifts me right off my feet! Actually, I am already lifted up by my Lord, but you surely get the point.
Heavenly
Evergreen Chant : beautiful and inspiring anytime , any day.

We'd be interested to hear what you think. We have a "Psalms" playlist, if that helps.
Beautiful. Thank you.
Thank you, too.
Please send me all your collections. This is a tip of the ice berg of what heaven is gonna be. This is sweet to the ears and good for the soul. God bless you
Thank you. But you are already being given our collections via this channel.

Awesome 👌
Beautiful psalm singing as I remember, on my visits to evensong. Barry achieved a lovely treble tone, never heard since, in my opinion.

As an Anglican I have always wonderd how on earth this mess of a denomination survived, I think I understand now.

And the same to you! :-)
I love this performance.

Wow. Ethereal. This was sung 50+ years ago? Thanks for sharing! It will be on my playlist for sure!
50+ years ago, indeed. Thanks for appreciating!
How beautiful! Thank you for posting it.

Weiß jemand wo kann man die Partitur bekommen?

I have put the chant on Dropbox. Here's the link: www.dropbox.com/s/3u6ja2kftz9iaiv/T%20Norris%20Chant%20in%20A.pdf?dl=0
