Launching Minecraft via Steam gives one the ability to access the Steam overlay menu, and thus a semi-integrated voice chat. I recommend that you use this feature while in full screen mode. Playing in a window of Minecraft that is not fully maximized doesn't work the best with the Steam overlay. Why not just use Skype? Steam takes up less resources than Skype, rarely crashes, and the overlay allows for integration with the game, unlike Skype. As user TrollBros. X aptly noted, Steam also is a wonderful gaming platform that connects you with friends and lets you play other games.

No, it does have a connection to steam, steam can't recognise 64bit versions of Java, but it can recognise 32bit versions, there for to get the in-game overlay working, you need a Java version that steam can display the overlay in.

You don't really need to launch Minecraft with steam... You can do it directly from steam itself, or skype, and now, you even have Discord.
Does this work with multiple conversation partners, without switching to steam overlay and selecting the other friend(s) on the list? And can i seperate Minecraft from Steam when i want to? Thanks, great video.

You don't need to add minecraft to your games, just start a group chat, minimize it, and play minecraft.
nice vid, I can hear your voice but there is alot of background noise, try using a program called audacity, you can check out my videos to see the audio quality and I use a crappy mic, I might even make a tutorial on how to do that in the future :p

The whole point with voice chat is that you speak ingame if you're close enough to eachother. This has no point at all, just use skype, teamspeak or whatever.

Skype has better quality and takes up less resources then steam, and you can just use ALT+TAB while in a maximized game... this is just dumb.

This video is really poorly explained. Make sure you install a 32bit version of java, otherwise steam can't recognise it, and thus the in game overlay will not appear, but seriously, there are far better ways to get in game voice chat than this, like skype or teamspeak. I came to the video thinking he was going to demonstrate a minecraft plugin. Silly me.
