  • This is a video from FabioChem demonstrating the correct way to use a rotary evaporator (rotavap).
    Details not explained in the video (in educational settings, these will usually be done by your instructor):
    1. You will need dry ice (isopropanol) in the cold finger and some liquid nitrogen in the vacuum trap
    2. You will need to set the water bath temperature appropriately; this depends upon the boiling point of the solvent you are evaporating (generally between 24 - 45 C)
    3. Adjust the vacuum so that the solvent distills at a rate that is reasonably fast, but not too fast (art + science!)

    We extracted tamarind seed oil using ethanol and we are separating the two, how to know if the tamarind seed oil is already pure and has no traces of ethanol? We are using rotavap, Is there any clear indication if we should turn off the rotavap already?

    Great video! Also, what is the water bath? Is it hot water to help with the evaporation process?

    Great video, could you call this a distillation?

    • @Penguinprof
      @Penguinprof  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Strictly speaking, yes it is. In practice, no one calls it a distillation because in this case, what is evaporating is waste (usually in a distillation process, you COLLECT the compounds that evaporate from the mixture). The Swiss company Büchi came up with this idea in 1957 (and made a fortune!)

    Once I forgot to turn vaccum off after I used it and the pressure stole my product. It was a little embarassing, but it must have looked kinda funny to my colleagues :D
