One of the worst examples I've seen lately is TH-cam's treatment of Ann Reardon. She made a video explaining why a popular "life hack" (fractal wood burning) was incredibly dangerous and potentially fatal, and they took down her video for promoting dangerous activities. Meanwhile, all the people she showed in her video who actually did the dangerous project and tell you how to do it still have their videos up. She managed to get the video back up but it lost all the previous views and comments, she had to beg people to share it.
Yesterday TH-cam handed down their final decision to SummoningSalt, that his video will remain age restricted because of the three second clip of swearing. TH-cam's discrepancy when it comes to demonetization and restriction is wild. Matt Walsh still has an incredibly popular youtube channel where he makes calls to violent action against trans and queer people; meanwhile, positive and incredible creators like summoning salt get screwed over.
Matt Walsh genuinely makes me fear for my health and safety and yet youtube is silent. I've been physically and sexually assaulted several times by people in that community, resulting in lasting physical and mental damage. And TH-cam is silent. His audience has resulted in many deaths, whether murder or suicide, among my people. And youtube is silent. This platform needs change.
Exactly I've reported his channel and videos countless times and nothing happens. He consistently fosters a community of hate and harassment and people who go out of their way to find the people he reposts (because he does nothing to hide their usernames of course) and attack and docx quite a few of them, many of them being children.
I don't understand the reasoning behind the vagueness-- they're definitely using automated review, it's not hard to just add automation that flags the section in question and lets you know what's wrong with it. Do they deliberately WANT to keep it vague so that nobody's able to look too closely at their policies/procedures? The only reason I see behind that is for them to be able to flag things arbitrarily.
To me it seems like a strategy to avoid accountability- blaming the amorphous seemingly random algorithm is easier than actually moderating/setting hard bans on types of content. Setting a precedent means anyone can point out where theyre slacking on moderation for profit/views/etc which is a big no no for youtube corp and friends 🙄
I think it's definitely deliberate. The vast majority of people uploading won't bother appealing it, they'll just cut their losses or edit and reupload. If they were more specific, the fact that the algorithm is bad at its job would be more obvious, and then people would bother complaining/appealing.
From what I understand the problem is that TH-cam just doesn't let creators know what the problem is when they claim there is one. Like how are you supposed to correct something if you don't know what the issue is. TH-cam really doesn't give its creators any other option than to be at the mercy of the algorithm and reviewing system
I sincerely doubt that could ever happen, unfortunately, although I agree with the sentiment. Like they said near the end, any kind of efforts for collective action on social media are just a drop in the bucket, and TH-camrs have no other good platforms to go to (or threaten to go to). There's just not enough dissatisfaction among creators for TH-cam to care.
Crazy how youtube is falling apart and twitch is also falling apart. Honestly, if most of the creators i follow move to a new platform around the same time, i'll gladly follow them and leave youtube
I’m so confused bc TH-cam DOES allow people to mute parts of their video after it’s been uploaded, I’ve seen it quite a few times, generally with copyright violations etc. Is it only allowed for music violations and not for age restricted content?? especially if it’s just a few seconds?? that’s insane
Tbh TH-cam is almost at this point a monopoly, so far as video uploading sites are concerned. TikTok is a competitor, but it will be a long uphill battle before anyone disrupts TH-cam’s corner in the market. After all, TH-cam has a history of being able to steal top creators on other platforms and entice them to upload on TH-cam. There are very few profitable options available to long-form content creators.
When it comes to the idea of tiktok as a competitor to youtube, I feel like their niches are separate enough (with the hosting of longer form content specifically) that tiktok doesn't really have the same pressure as a competitor that a situation where a business isn't a monopoly would have
TH-cam has had this problem for soooo long. I can't believe they still allow restrictions/dmca with no reason behind the initial strike. If they just told creators their issue, everything would be solved. Why is so goddamn hard for TH-cam to communicate?
Woah I didn’t know this would be a very relevant subject! I follow summoning salt and knew this was happening, I assumed it would be dealt with somewhat silently other than mentioning it, but I’m glad that TH-cams hypocrisy and idiocy is being spread :)
I know I’m 3 months late to the conversation but I would just like to say TH-cam is literally nothing without its creators and yet they still choose to let transphobia, racism, child abuse, etc pass but when there’s a few seconds of swearing it immediately gets age restricted. It’s been 3 months and it’s only gotten worse. Honestly if creators were able to move their content to another platform I’d be completely on board
I uploaded an unlisted video of Animal Crossing Wild World gameplay footage (no commentary) to show a friend, and TH-cam age-restricted it and I have no idea why. And then there’s a video of a live Mitski performance that seems to be flagged as for kids even though the lyrics have like, suicide imagery. I know they don’t want to reveal too much about the algorithm so people don’t game it, but I really have to wonder how it came to these decisions.
i actually had a conversation with my best friend today about my youtube commentary consumption while being not chronically online like a portion of the community is. he’s like i watch youtube but damn how do you find this stuff and know what they’re talking about? says it’s niche internet culture. i just like the fact of creators making content specifically for the taste of their viewers because we’re the ones that consume it
As a whole, speedrunning is looking for a reliable place for streaming that supports its creators. Twitch had been good, but more and more, Amazon seems to be cutting people's chances to actually make money there. TH-cam has a huge chance to bring over many more speedrunners. But they keep botching it. Time and time again, they botch it.
I have no subscribers. Posted a video about a skunk that made its way into my building. I got a notification that my video was age restricted. I did say tf. Once surprised. TH-cam is 1000% bias
Honestly can't imagine anything *less* offensive on this platform than Summoning Salt's work, dude has no beef, the content is clean-ish, wholesome, celebratory and uplifting, stuff youtube really likes on paper. If it really is the f-bomb spam in that one clip that got the video dinged, that's indicative of youtube deliberately - almost dogmatically - missing the forest for the trees.
I think it's good that a platform values the protection of it's users over the profit of the creators, but youtube is clearly not doing that but rather sanitizing the platform for advertisers.
Thank you for your perspective! Ive heard that debate before but never the way the both of you put it. Made it easier for me to understand and relate than when other people said it
I love this kind of discussion bc I want to do stuff, I just have so many interests idk what is worth my time as a full time worker part time student! Learning to edit is both a luxury and homework to me!
I've been a user/creator off and on since 2005. Haven't made any money from it, yet. Too much time between ideas. Recently, I've been trying to make a return but the platform still seems to fight itself. This place used to just be where people posted FFX cutscenes remixed to VNV Nation or other music, and the weird kids wanting to leave a tiny scratch on the sidewalk of fame. I love all parts of the site: games, commentary, music, films, cooking, etc. ...but the thing that sticks out from all of this... is the attitude of TH-cam, the corporate side. They are like the teachers who started a class on projects, but continues to ignore the students, bc they got better things to do like mass-market your ideas and collect extraneous profits. Maybe I'm just getting older and hate seeing peculiar animosities keeping the sides from talking. We're all in this crayon box together. The elders of our world were young once, they've just forgotten and became neglecting. But if Scatman Corothers taught me anything, it's that a simple thing can change your life. Or sometimes, make rambling comments on a commentary video of a podcast that leads to a scene in the Twilight Zone movie. Idk why either. ✌️
That was me over a yr ago. I hadn't heard of Danny or Drew, hadn't seen a CodyKo vid or even the Paul bros. I ignored recommendations and would sometimes not comment because I couldn't remember my login. YT doesn't have to change or be creator focused because the alternative doesn't exist. Patreon could be considered a competitor but there is nothing as large and well known as YT. It's the same with Amazon, Phillip Morris, and other companies that still exist despite their reputation.
TH-cam could fail if tiktok ever gets into standard format videos, and improves the silly teenager content they have, for quality stuff. Content creators and viewers would flock to tiktok if they ever did this. They are already a big threat to YT. Could you make a video on this possibility? What are your thoughts?
this reminds me of the time one of my channels got suspended. it had nothing but raw clips of rhythm game gameplay and it had been inactive for several years as well. it was supposedly banned for inappropriate comments and harassment, or something like that. i was very confused because i never made a single comment or used this channel for anything but hosting those clips. so naturally i appealed it, and i reached out to them- explaining my situation and hoping they could clarify further. nope, nothing! just them reaffirming the initial reason and not allowing me any further explanation or appeals. very cool of youtube!
This doesn't change the problems, but the people who run social media are probably just as frustrated at these problems. I am in social media and i am cleaning up customer services messes all the time. So at least one part of TH-cam is probably doing their part to make things better for creators, but the rest needs to follow suite.
I love Summoning Salt content. But as a parent, I would keep a hyper sensitive ear to what is being said in a video, because I wouldn't watch it while they are around. Although, to be fair, my kids don't know what swear words are, because we don't call attention to it when it does come up on the radio or when relatives slip up. I don't want to get to puritanical about the issue, but those kinds of videos, where 99.9% of the video is completely clean, I would censor the streamed swear words to prevent something like this from happening. ***The editing and muting stuff is a good point, the platform has been around long enough that there should be that kind of work around on hand to automatically mitigate this issue in the short term.***
@@GrayYeonWannabe That is an excellent and relevant point. And I would say no, dispute the fact that my kids would get in trouble at school for hitting someone. And after watching the video on the Summoning Alt account about what they went through and the policies, I actually think this issue is even more ridiculous, because the profanity is such a small section of the video compared to TH-cam's example in the policy. At the end of the day, I do wish there were tools in place for creators to not lose so much of their potential momentum with a video, such as the option for the flagged sections to get muted in the short term. And I agree more with Jarvis after viewing the SA video than I did 45 minutes ago.
This has really stuck with me over the last few hours. And I think at this point I'm ready to just say that I actively disagree with how TH-cam handled this. And I don't want to equate a TH-cam channel to something like the January 6th committee, but I am inclined to view a creator using a piece of media as is equated to reporting on it.
This is exactly what CoryxKenshin was talking about in his recent youtube call out. His was more about the racist aspect because he is such a large creator who we would assume have better relations with the company (compared to the relationships they have with non-black creators of his size) & they gave him the same run around as seasoning salt. Cory has 10x the size of Summoning's platform but theyre getting the same "we cant point to whats age restricted but it just is" treatment. I think this just shows the fundamental error in the system
I was trying to figure out why there was only 217 likes before realising this video is like an hour old. Ive never been this early in my life lmao , great video lads
Sounds like it's finally time for people to stop expecting a free paycheck from TH-cam and go back to hosting their own content like things were a little over a decade ago. Things were so much better that way. We didn't have to listen to TH-camrs constantly complaining about their free paychecks -- instead they gave us *content* (believe it or not). There was none of this reaction bullsh#%, none of this "being upset that my video for adults was reasonably categorized as not appropriate for children," none of this purposefully making your videos look like sh%& to avoid copyright claims, none of this constant complaining about Fair Use, none of this insufferable sense of entitlement that those of you who grew up with TH-cam as a career option have... If you guys want to start moving away from the free ride TH-cam gives you and start hosting your own content on your own platform I will 100000000% follow you. Things were infinitely better when everybody had their own website instead of everybody uploading their videos to the same website and constantly complaining about how much they hate all the free money TH-cam gives them. Enough is enough. Us poor people are sick of hearing rich TH-camrs complain about how TH-cam gives them free hosting space and free promotion and how much they hate it. Just make your own website then and pay for your own hosting space and promote your content on your own and then you can do whatever tf you want. This sense of entitlement you have where you expect TH-cam to bend over backward providing you with free hosting space entirely free from any sort of rules or regulations is just obnoxiously tone deaf. Life doesn't work that way. If you want your own rule-free hosting space, you're gonna have to do what the rest of us did and pay money for it. If you want a free hosting space that promotes your content and does all the hard work of getting you advertisers, then you're going to have to accept the fact that there are going to be some rules and regulations. I dunno how you expect TH-cam to hire people to personally watch every single video and come to a conclusion about how appropriate it's content is. That's ludicrous. If you want something like that, you're going to have to actually pay for your hosting space instead of just taking a free hand-out. When you take free hand-outs, you're obligated to abide by the terms of the person giving you the free hand-out. TH-cam bends over backward providing millions of people with not only free hosting space but also free promotion. AND they do the hard work of finding you a sponsor and hooking you up with advertisers. Get. The fuck. Over it. Or pay for your hosting space. I'm so sick of hearing TH-camrs complain, and I miss the days when everybody had their own website instead of just social media accounts on other people's websites. Figure it out, my dude.
You say you're so sick of hearing creators complain about youtube but you mustnt be listening at all. How can you be so passionate about this when you fail to comprehend the logistics and specifications of the entire operation entirely. The only people here getting anything for free are you, me and everyone else that watches videos on this website. You're the entitled one demanding that creators shouldn't be concerned with receiving financial compensation for their work, or even recognition. Furthermore, healthy discussion regarding working conditions is for everyone's benefit- in any industry. You should be ashamed of your venomous and vengeful attitude
This is an incredibly stupid take, I hope you know that. “Stop working hard for your employer and expecting a FREE paycheck, they don’t owe you anything for your labor! Just open your own business instead, it’s so easy!!!” You know how stupid that is, right? And TH-cam is silent.
His audience has resulted in many deaths, whether murder or suicide, among my people.
And youtube is silent.
This platform needs change.
They let Matt full Cleveland Steamer himself whenever he wants but if you talk about queer health you’re going to Puritan jail
And trans people get demonetized for discussing being trans lol
@@alexreid1173 disguising myself as Matt’s tears to talk about my life experiences
TH-cam really doesn't give its creators any other option than to be at the mercy of the algorithm and reviewing system
that suggestion about muting seems like a decent idea, i'm sure it'd be abused but it's such an easy temporary band aid at least
That didn't work for Corey when he was on his crusade to get transparency
I feel like youtubers need to unionize to make the company be better
I sincerely doubt that could ever happen, unfortunately, although I agree with the sentiment. Like they said near the end, any kind of efforts for collective action on social media are just a drop in the bucket, and TH-camrs have no other good platforms to go to (or threaten to go to). There's just not enough dissatisfaction among creators for TH-cam to care.
Crazy how youtube is falling apart and twitch is also falling apart. Honestly, if most of the creators i follow move to a new platform around the same time, i'll gladly follow them and leave youtube
Right? I’d go anywhere else to support my favorite creators in a heartbeat.
omg i love the reverse color coordination
I’m so confused bc TH-cam DOES allow people to mute parts of their video after it’s been uploaded, I’ve seen it quite a few times, generally with copyright violations etc. Is it only allowed for music violations and not for age restricted content?? especially if it’s just a few seconds?? that’s insane
i believe it's music only
@@SadBoyzClips what a strange and frustrating system!!
When it comes to the idea of tiktok as a competitor to youtube, I feel like their niches are separate enough (with the hosting of longer form content specifically) that tiktok doesn't really have the same pressure as a competitor that a situation where a business isn't a monopoly would have
@@northstarjakobs yeah, thats true.
I know they don’t want to reveal too much about the algorithm so people don’t game it, but I really have to wonder how it came to these decisions.
i actually had a conversation with my best friend today about my youtube commentary consumption while being not chronically online like a portion of the community is. he’s like i watch youtube but damn how do you find this stuff and know what they’re talking about? says it’s niche internet culture. i just like the fact of creators making content specifically for the taste of their viewers because we’re the ones that consume it
I don’t know what makes TH-cam think it’s allowed to outright lie about their customer service.
God, I love these two. Thoughtful conversation about TH-cam's poor treatment of its laborers.
TH-cam is a scammer but who can argue google> alphabet.... alphabet
I’m so glad that this is getting around, I love SummoningSalt and this situation is ridiculous
i just watched the demolition ranch guy shoot a big sniper rifle at a brick of sapphire but the mega men must be age restricted lmao
Sad Boyz being back has really turned my life around
Honestly can't imagine anything *less* offensive on this platform than Summoning Salt's work, dude has no beef, the content is clean-ish, wholesome, celebratory and uplifting, stuff youtube really likes on paper. If it really is the f-bomb spam in that one clip that got the video dinged, that's indicative of youtube deliberately - almost dogmatically - missing the forest for the trees.
I think it's good that a platform values the protection of it's users over the profit of the creators, but youtube is clearly not doing that but rather sanitizing the platform for advertisers.
Around 2:45: So you're saying TH-cam speedran the review process?
Yeah “idk why” would be a good summation of this comment
The density problem happened to Crankgameplays!! His 2 hour vid was age restricted for a 6-second clip where he said the F word multiple times!
The community was in remiss. They had never seen a TH-cam scandal like this. This was it.
So at least one part of TH-cam is probably doing their part to make things better for creators, but the rest needs to follow suite.
this podcast as gotten me out of such deep pockets of depression just by existing. i love you two ❤ keep up the amazing content
The return of the majestic mustachioed men ✨️
TH-cam is just trying not to pay out.
I love you both you are gorgeous sophisticated men
Thank you for talking about this it really upset me. Of all people SS doesn’t deserve it.
***The editing and muting stuff is a good point, the platform has been around long enough that there should be that kind of work around on hand to automatically mitigate this issue in the short term.***
sincere question, do you have the same policy about violence?
Jordan looks like Jarvis' dad lol
You ever think TH-cam age restricts videos to save money
Oh no he said mega man this video is going to get aged restricted
Spot on points made here.
6:48 jarvis's morgz video also got (temporarily?) age restricted
oh damn didn't even realize i was early
Yes, it is😌😌
18:40 ghost city tokyo reference anyone?
Jordan quit letting him talk over you like that
Thumbs up and an additional comment to beat the algorithm. Thanks for the video! 👍🔥👍
Twitter is HR
yessss
It’s true
❤
Mega Man = Alpha Male
No preaching misogyny here, folks
everyone i know uses facebook haha
watch this video get age restricted lol
Wow I’m early
You should be ashamed
of your venomous and vengeful attitude
This is an incredibly stupid take, I hope you know that.
“Stop working hard for your employer and expecting a FREE paycheck, they don’t owe you anything for your labor! Just open your own business instead, it’s so easy!!!”
You know how stupid that is, right?
If you think more ppl should host their own content and you’re sick of TH-camrs then why are you spending time here commenting and watching videos? Shouldn’t you be watching some content on someone’s blog page?
@@maddieb.4282 I just saw a comment of theirs from another video. They are extremely dismissive and completely cucked with some weird Boomer mentality against content creators.
Not every youtuber is "rich". TH-cam is a job for a lot of people so they deserve a paycheck
So many corps dont have a direct line to customer service, but I have gotten issues resolved by @ing the company on Twitter. I literally made a new profile after closing my old one and it is purely for customer service 😂
