Hey guys, I had a question. Let's say that the left is the negative direction and an object were to be going to the left at a constant 5m/s. Would the object's velocity be -5m/s to the left or would it just be 5m/s to the left?

The velocity would be -5m/s since velocity is a vector quantity and it has both MAGNITUDE '5' and DIRECTION 'negative'. However, if you consider speed which is a scalar quantity it would only be 5m/s.

If you are already mentioning that the direction is to the left then the velocity will be only 5ms-¹ to the left. You will only take it -5ms-¹ if the direction is to the right because in that case the direction of velocity would be opposite to the direction considered (i.e the left is opposite to the right).
The negative sign is only used to indicate opposite direction to the direction considered
