In NYC in Chinatown old Asain men play/busk the Erhu on the streets and down in the Subways, it’s so incredibly beautifully haunting and emotional.

1:01 in Betawi culture (Jakarta) we have 3 musical instruments that are the same as this because of the acculturation of Chinese culture in the past but a little different because at the ends we use coconut shells and we call them Tehyan, Kongahyan and Sukong ❤️

I bought one and self taught myself. Im no master but i can play with backing tracks or with people and if you have a basic understanding of music theory for stringed instruments its just passing the hurdle of bowing correctly. Thats the hardest part. You can find them for 100 USD on amazon and ebay that will help you learn these techniques. You dont wanna go play a concert with them but you can hone your skill untill you can afford an upgrade. Plus its one of the funnest instruments ive learned. One of the favorite i own

I just purchased a sandalwood Erhu from Temu. Normally, anything would be of horrible quality from Temu, however; I got very lucky. I must have caught a worker that had extra time on his hand or simply took care. Perhaps it was the piece of wood he used. It sounds best when tuned in "D"... It sounds absolutely fantastic and keeps tune for many days which is rare. Thank you from Canada, your lessons has taught me many thing..... Merry Christmas to you and family.

Hi Sung Wah, the problem I have with my erhu is that when I try to play it, it just makes a screeching/scratching noise.
What could be the problem? Rosin? I am not sure how much rosin I am supposed to put on it. This is my first Erhu I have ever owned.
If anyone else has any advice for me on how to get my erhu to play, I would be grateful. I have the strings tuned, the string tied properly around the two wires, and the bridge is properly in place at the resonator.

I agree with Joel, if you've ever heard a person playing the violin for the first time, oh boy you would not want to be in the same room. These rules apply. As long as sound is coming out of the instrument you have put enough rosin on.

I love all Chinese instruments.. Currently, I'm learning the guzheng, since it's easier and thus I can be semi-self-taught. Semi because I won't have a teacher, but I am using TH-cam videos and other sources. But someday, I'd like to learn the erhu as well. So beautiful.
Also, for anyone wondering, I don't have a teacher because there's very few of them in Texas. Unfortunately not many people know of or use Asian instruments in the US, so it's hard to find teachers for erhus and guzhengs. There are online teachers for the guzheng, though, and probably the erhu too.. So I may look into those eventually. :)

On mine it didn't make a sound because I forgot to add rosin. And to get it to work you need to scratch the top of the rosin with a penny or something to get the dust up. Rub the rosin on both sides of the bow string, directly from the block of rosin. If it's a first time, you need to rub it on the bow for a long time, I read that it was 3 to 5 minutes of rubbing rosin on the bow. Hope this helps.

What sort of price should I expect to pay for my first one? I’m very poor, and can’t afford much. Also, am I right in thinking that the string doesn’t actually come into contact with the neck (equivalent of fret board)?

I noticed that when I press down on the string, the string is pulled away from the 'string' that's wrapped around the neck to D and A string. It didn't seem to do that with you. I feel like I am pressing down on it incorrectly. Or maybe too hard. Anyways. Thank you for the demonstration.

you're not pressing the strings to the shaft, are you? how is it not muted, as it would be with the guitar?

    • @roelvanuden
      @roelvanuden 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

You probably know that a guitar string is plucked and the sound decays over time. What happens is that the plucking action sends the string into a rotational movement, if you look very closely, the string goes in circles. Because you put your finger behind a fret, the flesh of your finger does not stop that movement and the result is the sound you know! You also know that putting your fleshy finger mutes that movement very quickly. An Erhu, or any stringed instrument, uses a different principle. The bow hair has rosin applied and has very tiny hair extensions. Pulling the bow across the string continuously grasps the string and moves it horizontally, but because it can't go any further, the little hair extension releases causing the string to snap back horizontally. Then it's pulled again and this cycle repeats. The movement is continuously horizontal, so you can think of this like plucking the string very rapidly! That's why the flesh of a finger is not enough to mute the sound, the string keeps getting grasped and released so quickly it never stops vibrating even with your finger on it. The same applies to any stringed instrument (violin, viola, cello, etc).

This instrument is magic seriously before erhu, violin was my top 1 fav instrument but I guess erhu is much better and sounds heavenly to me

I thought gao hu is tuned to A-E and not G-D.

I’ve always tuned my gao hu to G-D

@@user-fx7fi6hp4g IC. Because Zhonghu is G-D, Erhu is D-A, I just expected Gaohu to be A-E based on the pattern. My guess is it's because there are more pieces in key of G then in key of A?
