Either they go in blind, expecting to have fun for some reason, but mostly getting clapped or having to grind to then find a mostly desolate underground on their journey. ... or yeah, they want to have a bad time... in either case they do, actually.
They all just wanna...eperience...the sans fight..right?...they wouldnt be able to live peacefully without experiencing...the last...genocide bossfight..they would then feel acomplished...then most ...would stop playing the game
@Justhank Sans requires much more practice to do, but both bosses are overall comparable in how hard they can be (it's different for each individual, as the fights are vastly different): - Sans becomes incredibly difficult at the end of his very long fight, meaning you have to learn a lot to get to that point, at which he obliterates you a couple more times before you know how to win... if you don't screw up, which is very easy against his final attack - Undyne the Undying is a little easier to learn mainly due to a shorter overall fight and already knowing beforehand how regular Undyne works (unless your first run is literally vs. Undying), and she has a less diverse set of patterns, but they become faster at low HP and are potentially hard to navigate through (mainly the red soul mode attacks)

The random encounter rate will slow down and eventually when you get an encounter that only has the text "But Nobody Came..." you know youve killed all the monsters in the zone. The music will slow to a crawl and the guard will evacuate all the towns.
The reason you have to grind so much is because the Genocide Route is constantly trying to make you feel bad about yourself, in both story and gameplay aspects. It legitimately WANTS YOU TO SUFFER

Honestly, the mood in the genocide route is just perfect, you see yourself walking through the places in the underground, monsters are hiding from you, imagine being in their shoes, praying "Frisk" doesn't see you.
and it's supposed to be tedious, toby fox didn't want the game to be fun or to give rewards like big battles, and a lot of content. so much so that on this route the only enemies you really fight are undyne and sans, undyne is more or less difficult, being a battle to make you go back because of the difficulty, and sans with the same purpose, but this time he dies with one hit and in a pathetic way, not being a very nice victory
What baffles me the most is that it's practically impossible to accidentally get the genocide route. You know what you're doing, and you have no regrets
Yeah, even if your first experience with undertale is like a traditional rpg (that is killing everyone on sight), you will most likely only get 20+ kill leaderless neutral ending.
The reason it’s so Grindy is because of shows you are really committing to this path. You’re really hunting every single monster and hunting them to extinction. The game knows you’re making a conscious effort to kill everyone and not on neutral when first time players might just kill everything they see to progress but not wipe out the entire underground. And also monster population.

But where something changes is the outcome of the Sans fight. Where Flowey failed, you succeeded in killing him in cold blood and dust. Once you do that, there's no escape. Encounter Asgore and you will kill him. He turns to dust after Flowey steals the kill to try desparately to not die. But that attempt was in vain. Then... your game is forever cursed.
The only reason i havent done genocide is because ive compleated the true pacifist run and i dont wanna ruin all the good memories i have with those characters. Plus i dont have the heart to kill sans or papyrus they are my 2 faves😂
When i got undertale, i wanted to do a genocide route to challenge myself. In the end, i ended up on neutral, went back and did genocide. I reached sans. I died over and over, in the end i took sans' advice, to reset and do a true pacifist route. So that's what I did. I reset and did a true pacifist run. I never ended up reseting because I lost that steam account, now its stuck on true pacifist forever. The best ending that could've happened.
The reason genocide is so long and grindy is because they want you to feel like a monster. Like, you are going out of your way to be as horrible of a person as possible when you could simply just not do that and reach a better ending for everyone involved. It shows you that most of the time it’s easier to be a good person than it is to be a bad person, and being a good person is so much more rewarding. I think undertale can teach everyone that when you make choices, you should always think of what would be best for everyone. My personal opinion is Help self + help others = smart Hurt self + help others = people pleasing Help self + hurt others = selfish Hurt self + hurt others = stupid

Genocide Route was never intended to be "fun" (and I know what you might try to say when I said this but no I do not mean the same "fun" we are familiar with here btw) in the same way as the experience that the Pacifist Route gives you but instead gives the player false pleasure to what they did to the monsters. The Player took away their innocent lives and this made the emotional experience feel terrible for how it portrays their demise, especially for the main characters as they were experiencing a slow but also impactful death right in front of you. The Pacifist Route is what gives the Player happiness and enjoyment for all of the things they did to get what they wanted from this, which is what the Genocide Route would not actually be expected to do since it has serious consequences for the things you did upon reaching its endings.

In all games, the path of evil does not differ from good gameplay, and perhaps even easier Secondly, after all, a Pacifist is as terrible as Genocide, because you force yourself to spare monsters when you want to kill them and vice versa. Even more than that - it is more profitable to kill monsters than to spare them. So why should I spare them? Plot? No most of the battles in the game do not affect the plot at all

"my biggest complaint is the amount of grinding you have to do" It's intentional. For 2 reasons: 1) The game *heavily* discourages doing the genocide route. Along with very emotional story beats like the shopkeep in snowdin leaving a note saying "please don't hurt my family" and having to kill the characters you love, the grind is one way in which the game tries to make you give up doing this path. 2) By killing so many monsters and having to do such a grind, it makes sure you really want what's coming to you. Like you said, you're doing this to fight Sans. By doing the grind, you're showing just how much you want - and how much you deserve - the punishment coming your way.
The grinding is intentional. In the lore it's to show that you that your character is going out of their way to kill every last monster in the underground
i like the grinding because it: - discourages you from doing it (or doing it again) - Shows how you're killing EVERYONE you possibly can. youre running around looking for victims like a real psycho - it makes sure youre not doing this by accident

I still remember the first time when I was doing the genocide run on PC. I made it to the Mad dummy and for some reason, I though it would be ok to let him live and after the fight was over, I saved and THEN found out that it's a neutral run now. Never tried genocide run ever again after that
I think it'd be funny if there was a way for Sans to know whether you were doing the Genocide route out of interest or to fight him, and if you did it just for him, if he denied you the satisfaction of fighting him.
You shouldn't want to fight Sans. After we had a glimpse of everything, we always want more, to see other what if's, more dialogues.. and then we lose ourselves far down the road.. questioning... What did i do with my life? Boredom will come again and you will see the maxed out stats and wonder "was everything I did worth it?" And this is not only in the game. Im currently fighting a drawing addiction
As someone also doing genocide for the first time and SERIOUSLY struggling on Undyne I understand. Seriously, it's hard to beat her. Especially with a controller.
I was doing genoside, but then I messed up by killing metton Neo before killing the last side monster - and because of this 1 mistake, I had to reset-- * le cri*
If you hold down the arrow keys (or arrow buttons on Switch) while hugging a wall you can basically automate the grinding. Just note that I don’t think you can do it in the other console versions and on Switch you can’t do it in handheld mode for some reason
The grinding is part of the gameplay bc it makes you evil in q different way. Grinding monsters is so boring and annoying but you still do it cuz you're a monster.
I belive in you, the first run is always the hardest but if you want to you can find many easter eggs through genocide so you should totally also look into that after you kill sans.
The grindy-ness is the whole point to the genocide route. Theres no fun puzzles, no happy and catchy songs, no funny jokes from sans, no quircky characters. Just murder. The genocide is toby trying to show the player that grinding is literally a mass murderer. He makes a huge twist to rpg's where you need to grind innocent characters/animals for Exp. Undyne's new theme is "Battle against a true hero." YOU are not the hero in this route. It's supposed to be the direct opposite of the pacifist route. It gives the most wholesome and loveable characters the most gruesome deaths.
The reason it's so grindy is because (in my opinion) the genocide route is literally supposed to be the answer to the question "what if you were to EXP grind in a world with actual people?" You're not supposed to be able to stumble into it accidentally, you're making the conscious decision to hunt down and kill every single monster
Btw if you kill all dog enemies in Snowden aside from greater dog he will be sad in grillbys, and if you do enough resets flowey just won’t talk to you at the beginning!
The boring grinding is intentional. It gives you a feel for just how many things you are taking the lives of. And it also serves the message of the genocide route, and it was not exactly intended to be "fun".
fun stranger story: i was kind of always an undertale fan. i got the game. completed some routes. but i never touched the genocide because i was feeling bad about doing it. a bit after a year or so. i started the genocide run. reset on undyne. began the run again. beat undyne. got to sans. sans absolutely destroyed my soul. i rage quitted so hard i didnt touch the game in over a year or so. after that i came back. DID A RESET. and finally i beat sans. god my heartbeat when i killed him a few years later. i'm beating sans undertale on mobile. not that hard anymore. moving on to the fangames. wish me luck boys
Are you posting videos of the gameplay? And also, by holding up and down at the same time by a wall it makes it easier to grind enemies. Good luck with sans when you get there!
the genocide run is actually hard because if you mess up 1 kill the genocide route doesnt work anymore and if you wanna continue the route you need to reset do everything again get to the same room start grinding until you count enough kills without messing up also good luck with the run and a fact when you do sans you cant die at the bones when they attack you at the menu but it can only drop you to 1hp
I mean the genocide run wasn’t really supposed to normally happen, which explains the annoyance of grinding, it was just another route that the player CAN access, but was never normally supposed to, the game gets more lifeless and disappointing the more pain you cause.

The annoying grinding is intentional. There's so much grinding A) to make certain that people don't accidentally end up on a genocide run - you have to be a murder hobo on purpose, and B) in a meta way, the Genocide run *wants* to be as uninteresting as possible to dissuade the Player from going that route and to give the Player no good excuse for playing the whole route through. It's not supposed to be fun. You're not doing it for fun. You have no good reason for doing it. You're doing it just because you can. And that makes you a monster. The game calls you out for it constantly. You're committing genocide of a virtual world, just because you can and because there are no "real world" consequences. It's not about fun. It's about the Player emotionally disconnecting from this world they can affect and doing horrible things, just because its "just a game". The characters are just numbers - statistics. A bunch of ones and zeroes that give you meaningless exp. Power. In a Genocide route, the numbers are all that matters to the Player. Not fun. It's why Sans' fight hits especially hard. Because he *knows* what the Player is doing. He knows it's hopeless - impossible for him to win - so long as you stay in the mindset that you're in. His fight is more of a hail mary - one big, desperate attempt to make you see reason. That's why he offers a fake a mercy mid-fight and straight up tells you, "If we're really friends, you won't come back". If you genuinely care about their world, you'll reset. If you don't, then you prove the point that the Genocide run is trying to make - without consequences and empathy, we are capable of monstrous things. It's not about fun. It's about killing, just because you can. Just because you want to see what happens and experience everything, even though you don't have to. It's about physically and emotionally harming these characters that Players claim to care about, just because, so long as we reset, there are no permanent consequences. Save one - a reminder from Chara that your actions do have lasting consequences. One tiny change, but it's one you can't reverse. You give up Frisk's soul for the Genocide route, just because you can. The Genocide route's point is: Is it worth it? The gameplay of Genocide does it's best to convince you that it's not. How can it be worth it if it's not even fun to do? How can you justify what you've done? Undertale is a great game.
A lot of people complain about the grinding, but it really isn’t that bad to me. You just find a wall or long pathway and walk along the wall back and forth. It really isn’t that bad and you can watch a video or something while you do it since it doesn’t require a lot of your attention. Tbf this is coming from someone that plays grindy games so to me it is t even that grindy tbh

Neutral and pacifist were easy and all bosses took me 4 times at most. Undyne on genocide is an insane jump in difficulty.

Never played undertale before but I’ve heard so many good things about it.
Play it. It’s not long. It will take only a week or two. It is quite funny tho.
Plus it's not that expensive it costs like 9,99 euro on steam.

I feel like there needs to be an option in the other routes for you to LITERALLY ASK SANS TO FIGHT. It beats killing an entire population

The genocide route isn't supposed to be fun, it's meant to deter and guilt trip the player as much as possible

A quick tip for next geno run, resetting the room is super helpful, and if your on pc you can do a wall glicu for more enemys

I still remember the first time when I was doing the genocide run on PC. I made it to the Mad dummy and for some reason, I though it would be ok to let him live and after the fight was over, I saved and THEN found out that it's a neutral run now. Never tried genocide run ever again after that

I think it'd be funny if there was a way for Sans to know whether you were doing the Genocide route out of interest or to fight him, and if you did it just for him, if he denied you the satisfaction of fighting him.

After we had a glimpse of everything, we always want more, to see other what if's, more dialogues.. and then we lose ourselves far down the road.. questioning... What did i do with my life? Boredom will come again and you will see the maxed out stats and wonder "was everything I did worth it?"

As someone also doing genocide for the first time and SERIOUSLY struggling on Undyne I understand. Seriously, it's hard to beat her. Especially with a controller.
Fun fact: in geno, the mad dummy fight is 100% skipped, and instead it's glad dummy (that you kill)
I was doing genoside, but then I messed up by killing metton Neo before killing the last side monster - and because of this 1 mistake, I had to reset-- * le cri*
The whole point of the game making you grind, and skipping puzzles, is to make you get bored and quit. Pretty smart game design.
If you hold down the arrow keys (or arrow buttons on Switch) while hugging a wall you can basically automate the grinding. Just note that I don’t think you can do it in the other console versions and on Switch you can’t do it in handheld mode for some reason
For a quick way of grinding go to the top left corner of a room and hold all arrows
The grinding is part of the gameplay bc it makes you evil in q different way. Grinding monsters is so boring and annoying but you still do it cuz you're a monster.
I belive in you, the first run is always the hardest but if you want to you can find many easter eggs through genocide so you should totally also look into that after you kill sans.
The grindy-ness is the whole point to the genocide route. Theres no fun puzzles, no happy and catchy songs, no funny jokes from sans, no quircky characters. Just murder. The genocide is toby trying to show the player that grinding is literally a mass murderer. He makes a huge twist to rpg's where you need to grind innocent characters/animals for Exp. Undyne's new theme is "Battle against a true hero." YOU are not the hero in this route. It's supposed to be the direct opposite of the pacifist route. It gives the most wholesome and loveable characters the most gruesome deaths.
The reason it's so grindy is because (in my opinion) the genocide route is literally supposed to be the answer to the question "what if you were to EXP grind in a world with actual people?" You're not supposed to be able to stumble into it accidentally, you're making the conscious decision to hunt down and kill every single monster

Btw if you kill all dog enemies in Snowden aside from greater dog he will be sad in grillbys, and if you do enough resets flowey just won’t talk to you at the beginning!
The boring grinding is intentional. It gives you a feel for just how many things you are taking the lives of. And it also serves the message of the genocide route, and it was not exactly intended to be "fun".
fun stranger story: i was kind of always an undertale fan. i got the game. completed some routes. but i never touched the genocide because i was feeling bad about doing it. a bit after a year or so. i started the genocide run. reset on undyne. began the run again. beat undyne. got to sans. sans absolutely destroyed my soul. i rage quitted so hard i didnt touch the game in over a year or so. after that i came back. DID A RESET. and finally i beat sans. god my heartbeat when i killed him
a few years later. i'm beating sans undertale on mobile. not that hard anymore.

Are you posting videos of the gameplay? And also, by holding up and down at the same time by a wall it makes it easier to grind enemies.

the genocide run is actually hard because if you mess up 1 kill the genocide route doesnt work anymore and if you wanna continue the route you need to reset do everything again get to the same room start grinding until you count enough kills without messing up also good luck with the run and a fact when you do sans you cant die at the bones when they attack you at the menu but it can only drop you to 1hp

this is how i did it too. i started with neutral, then pacifist, then genocide. my first impressions of genocide were just as you.
I mean the genocide run wasn’t really supposed to normally happen, which explains the annoyance of grinding, it was just another route that the player CAN access, but was never normally supposed to, the game gets more lifeless and disappointing the more pain you cause.

To be honest genocide is REALLY FUN on the more brutal deaths
The annoying grinding is intentional. There's so much grinding A) to make certain that people don't accidentally end up on a genocide run - you have to be a murder hobo on purpose, and B) in a meta way, the Genocide run *wants* to be as uninteresting as possible to dissuade the Player from going that route and to give the Player no good excuse for playing the whole route through. It's not supposed to be fun. You're not doing it for fun. You have no good reason for doing it. You're doing it just because you can. And that makes you a monster.
The game calls you out for it constantly. You're committing genocide of a virtual world, just because you can and because there are no "real world" consequences. It's not about fun. It's about the Player emotionally disconnecting from this world they can affect and doing horrible things, just because its "just a game". The characters are just numbers - statistics. A bunch of ones and zeroes that give you meaningless exp. Power. In a Genocide route, the numbers are all that matters to the Player. Not fun.
It's why Sans' fight hits especially hard. Because he *knows* what the Player is doing. He knows it's hopeless - impossible for him to win - so long as you stay in the mindset that you're in. His fight is more of a hail mary - one big, desperate attempt to make you see reason. That's why he offers a fake a mercy mid-fight and straight up tells you, "If we're really friends, you won't come back". If you genuinely care about their world, you'll reset. If you don't, then you prove the point that the Genocide run is trying to make - without consequences and empathy, we are capable of monstrous things.
It's not about fun. It's about killing, just because you can. Just because you want to see what happens and experience everything, even though you don't have to. It's about physically and emotionally harming these characters that Players claim to care about, just because, so long as we reset, there are no permanent consequences.
Save one - a reminder from Chara that your actions do have lasting consequences. One tiny change, but it's one you can't reverse. You give up Frisk's soul for the Genocide route, just because you can. The Genocide route's point is: Is it worth it?
The gameplay of Genocide does it's best to convince you that it's not. How can it be worth it if it's not even fun to do? How can you justify what you've done?

A lot of people complain about the grinding, but it really isn’t that bad to me. You just find a wall or long pathway and walk along the wall back and forth. It really isn’t that bad and you can watch a video or something while you do it since it doesn’t require a lot of your attention. Tbf this is coming from someone that plays grindy games so to me it is t even that grindy tbh
