The subcompact SUV/CUV market is a popular one, especially as more people move out of cars into this segment, and we’re putting two of them head-to-head. In one corner, we have the Honda HR-V, which is redesigned into an all-new version for 2023. In the other corner, Mazda’s CX-30 received some updates for 2022, and so our 2023 model is pretty much carried over. We’re going to see what makes each one tick.
Each comes in three trim levels and we’re in the top one in each. In the Honda, that’s the EX-L Navi, which means it has leather upholstery and a navigation system, and it’s $37,910 - note that in our video, it’s wearing an accessory roof rack that isn’t part of that price. Our CX-30 is the GT Turbo and it rings in at $38,950.

Thank you for the review...those are crazy prices. OMG, I just can't see how anyone would want to pay $40k for these.
I own a 2023 Mazda CX-30 Preferred Package and I test drove the new HRV. The H-RV is less powerful, yes, but the biggest difference is how they ride and that's personal preference. The CX-30 is a VERY firm suspension and you are going to feel all the bumps and vibrations in the road, yet the handling is amazing. The H-RV is a lot more smooth of a ride, softer suspension but does not handle quite as well, it's more balanced. Not as exciting, but I have to say I really did not realize how firm the suspension is on the CX-30 and it's hard to relax in my car because of it. It's not a relaxing ride, it's and exciting ride. I'm starting to miss having a smoother ride! It was fun at first but it's hard getting used to a suspension like that after a while. I'm tired of feeling EVERYTHING on the road, would like more softness in an everyday car. And BTW, mine was $28,000 USD (brand new), there are plenty of great features on lower trims in both the CX-30 and H-RV.
As a Cx-30 owner, actually I don't find it quite firm. Is it firmer than Hr-v, Kia, Citroen etc? Yeah it may be. However, I and my wife are quite happy with it's comfort. Especially, it absorbs small bumps or uneven surfaces quite well. I believe our different opinion about comfort may be due to the tires. Ours has Continental Premium Contact 6 as a reference.
@@burakdenizbinay7450 I live down roads that are pretty rough and it doesn't absorb bumps well at all. I changed the tires, didn't make a difference. I think it depends what you are used to previously. Mazda is not known for being a soft ride, they are tuned to have better handling and a firm ride.
The CX 30 has another drive mode. The switch is located on the left of the steering wheel and will put the cuv into off road / all terrain 4 wheel drive mode. Takes about a week to get used to the BMW style infotainment system. As for the pricing, get used to it people, it's gonna get worse. As for anything else, what she said in the end. I bought the Mazda.
I know performance and acceleration is not the point of these cars, but I have tested the HR-V and the CX-30 with the non turbo 2.5, and their 0 to 100kmh acceleration difference is huge, the HR-V is painfully slow it took me 11.08s (GPS) vs the Mazda's 8.42s, at sea level, and the turbo is about 2 seconds faster than the NA 2.5. Really a deal breaker for me, the Honda needs more torque.
Vehicle settings / connectivity / scroll to the bottom of connectivity / touchscreen active in motion /.....there you have it .
In 2022 after researching, I chose a CX30 Turbo premium. This vehicle is a daily commuter. It is fun to drive, engaging to drive. Quite, nimble, sporty.
One correction, you are testing the HR V, it is not the top spec level. The ex-l does have power driver seats
158 hp is ridiculous for an SUV, especially at this price point. This decision reminds me of what Honda did for Acura with the ILX. They don't even offer rear ac vents! Sure, it might be more spacious, but boy is it boring in every single way. Why live life like this, spending almost $40k for something that puts you to sleep?

When speaking of the HRV design being old. I think a reason could be that it shares a very similar appearence to the 2020 Ford Escape but in miniature.
Just traded in a 2021 hrv EX for a 2023 cx30 turbo premium plus in the US.

I'm confused...The EX-L HRV has power seats per Honda's website.
The features might be different depending on the market, for example in the U.S. the CX30 does not get the 2.0L 4 cylinder.
The review vehicles are Canadian examples.
Power Seat only for US.

'Really nailed the differences between these two vehicles. The CVT transmission in the HR-V, combined with its weak engine - even though the vehicle offers more practicality - gives the win to the sporty CX-30 (and thanks, Canadians, for pronouncing it "Mahz-da," which soothes my south-of-the-border ears). The outcome might have been different if Honda had chosen to install their more-powerful *and* economical hybrid system in this HR-V for the same current price as this top-level, arguably overpriced trim.
Besides the lack of power in the Honda, I have to say, how a small family SUV does not have rear A/C vents and armrest with cupholders. It does feel much roomier inside however.
How does one honestly compare these two vehicles when the Mazda has 2 engines over 200 hp while the Honda barely has one 158 hp engine? 🤷🏼🤔🙄
After driving a cx-30, all the Toyotas or Hondas feel cheap. Mazda really made their cars for the drivers.

Cx30 is in a whole other class for awd performance. Mazda has invested a ton of work into it. Honda has historically viewed AWD as largely unnecessary for most vehicles.
I’ve got a new HRV. It’s my 4th Honda. I did over 100,000 miles on them. The only thing I had to replace was brakes. Talk your talk. Not a Mazda fan!

Mazda has ALWAYS had touchscreen , if you pair your phone to it , if you know how to surf the menu ....so please learn how to do it and stop saying no touchscreen .
I had tha new honda,what a pos😢. Very dissatisfied disappointed,mexica junk .Folks if the vin starts with a 3 it is junk cheap no quality!!!!!!!!!!! Got rid of it !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right, for those prices, I'd look for (yr old) Pilots or Highlanders, CX 90's, or compact SUV's from luxury manufacturers at that price. I'm expecting more speed, more crash worthy, more space, more quiet at all speeds, more real world resale value...

I’d take the cash for a fun retirement rather then driving a new chunk of steel with money you don’t have to impress strangers you don’t know at a stop light.
