ICM Messerschmitt Bf109E-4 Plastic Model Kit in 1/72 Scale - Unboxing Review

  • I recently purchased the ICM Messerschmitt Bf109E-4 (72134) 1/72 scale plastic model kit due to the interesting night fighter paint scheme that came included! I hope that this simpler paint scheme would allow a quicker than normal completion of the model.
    I've not had much experience so far of the model kits from this manufacturer in Ukraine, & was surprised to discover that whilst this kit does feature some modern features, it is actually an older tooling than I first thought! So how does this kit hold up to today's standards?

    One note that is good to keep in mind - this isn't actually a kit designed by ICM. This is the Tamiya 109E kit, with parts rearranged on the frames and no locating tabs, so the design is actually from the 90s.

      Supposedly the Tamiya tooling was released in 2000, so if this is a copy of it, they did it shortly after the release from Tamiya. I would like to believe that they didn't copy it but there do seem to be quite a few similarities. This being said, differences I can see are that the cockpit assembly is somewhat different, being split into more parts on the ICM kit, the prop assemblies are different (no polycaps on the ICM version) and the Tamiya offering comes with either a bomb or drop tank option, which is missing from the ICM kit.
      Whilst there are similarities (and also, there are some with the Airfix version which came later) I would hope that it was an original ICM design and the areas which seem common between the toolings are just a state of common design processes as the best way to create the product. I mean, after all, how many ways can different companies come up with the solution of creating the same model in the same scale?

    For 'decal film' read 'varnish'. I work in the trade and produce artwork for decal sheets, some of which go to Cartograf for printing. The varnish is very important, as you noted, it is best kept tight to the edge of the printed item, gone are the days when you need a massive border of the stuff around each item - Eduard take note! The awkward ones are generally when you have peculiar shaped nose art. A figure with arms and legs all over the place for example where you need to have a 'web' of varnish across awkward gaps to stop the decal folding up on itself and sticking to itself. I have had that happen to me and is very frustrating. As a modeller myself, I have a good insight into what is required for each marking, erring on the side of tight is right wherever possible.

    Hi Matt, when I had kits with no location pins or tabs I glued some plastic card on the inside this helps with the build and gives the kit a bit of reinforcement.

    I bought one of these a few years ago because they are really cheap - think mine was £8 from Dave Coley's Emporium. It's not as good as the Airfix kit, and the Special Hobby kit is better still. Main problem is the soft, springy plastic, but it can be made to look OK. Mine became a paint mule and I keep wondering why I never finished it

    Have a couple icm 1/48 spitfires, which must date from a similar time frame. 1 had quite a bit of flash on, the other wasn't so bad. Look reasonable detail wise. Can't complain for the price. I think about £14 each. When built they will be used for air brush practice.

    From what I can see on your video, the mould quality doesn't look great, I know it's fairly cheap but the Airfix one looks to me the better choice, posable flaps, engine detail if you like that sort of thing and it is very affordable, very little flash on the Airfix one is also a plus.

    Hi. The main issue with this kit is that ICM has forgotten to provide the sensor bulge that goes on the bottom of the rear fuselage, just after where the wings attach. You can see the bulge in the picture on the boxtop, but it isn’t shown on the instruction sheet or painting guide. The bulge can be scratchbuilt but its centre is a clear window where the equipment inside is visible. Other than that it looks like a nice kit and an interesting subject. 😊

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ah I see! I had to look it up and yes it would seem there is a small blister on the bottom of the tail (just forwards of the Luftwaffe cross) that seems to be missing . . I wonder if I have something similar in my spares box which would do as a facsimile

    I just started building this. I found it was a little on the irritating side for me. Had issues getting the fuselage halves together with the cockpit details installed. i had to ditch the pedals. Ofcourse i found there is no alignment pins for the halves either. That took some creativity to get them lined up. Ultimately i gave up on it. Maybe I will come back to it later.

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Airfix are a pretty safe choice, and there are some very good models from brands such as ICM, Revell, Academy and Tamiya etc - might be worth looking up the specific models to make sure you are getting a modern tooling though, as somtimes they "sneak" old toolings into modern boxes and they aren't always as good

    • @hellloadventures3797
      @hellloadventures3797 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ModelMinutes yeah I always look up my models but I just get worried about other brands just because I had a lot of bad luck with a rebel kit once and it was very terrible to build.

    • @lllordllloyd
      @lllordllloyd หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@hellloadventures3797 An issue is the quality of a kit depends far more on when it was made, than who made it. At least in the case of the old model companies. A new(ish) kit sold under the Airfix brand could be from the 1960s.
      Tamiya, Hasegawa and Eduard are pretty consistently good. But Scalemates and online reviews are there to help.

    As I’ve "built" that kit there are some real bad fit issues. I’ve found that the cockpit tub is real difficult as there’s no locating tabs/slots you’ve gotta do it manually and joining the fuselages together was a real pain if you haven’t got the cockpit tub seated correctly.

    As someone who loves scale and scale detail. It REALLY boils my p*ss that decals for Nazi equipment doesn't come with swastika decals. Its so bloody annoying. It doesn't mean I support the rhetoric (far from it!) But it's just not accurate! P.C nonsense ruins another innocent hobby.

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Some companies do include them in their kits, but I understand why some don't, and usually it is just a cost saving exercise - nothing about being PC. In some countries it is literally illegal to sell something with that symbol, so instead of making an "accurate" set of decals for one market and a "safe" set for another, the most economical decision is to just omit them.
      If you do purchase the kit and want to make it more accurate there are aftermarket suppliers of these symbols
