Just did it! I purchased from Ikea RÖDALM Frame, white, 41x51 cm (16x20 ") $16.99 CAD - it has the built in shadow-box frame so I didn't have to cut foam board strips to create a built-in- frame. Thanks for this video!!!

I have always loved this float mount look and I’m definitely gonna try this. Thank you so much for sharing your methods. I recently took a pastel painting to the framer and he wanted $400 to frame an 18 x 24“ without a mat. So I walked out without getting it framed, luckily I have a friend who can build me a frame.

Seems like, even with a piece of paper over your painting, that spoon would do something to your painting! Anyway, I love the look!

Wonderful tutorial. I love floating frames. I usually get the double glass floating frames but will definitely try this method.
I hope you give this one a try. With the double glass floating frames, the art is usually touching the front glass. Overtime the painting may get stuck to the glass.

Thank you for this. I have the same issues with paper size. Why they cant make the paper match the mats and frames would make painting a lot easier. It is very hard to frame a 1/4 imperical size painting.

Great idea! I’ve used a similar technique when painting acrylic on watercolor paper. Before painting I tear the paper to get a “deckled edge”. Once finished it has a more earthy look.
I bet the decked edge looks beautiful floating.

Thanks for the video. Why do you use linen tape to hinge it instead of the double sided tape?
This hinging tape is acid-free so it won’t hurt the art. Ideally, for original art, you want acid-free, archival tape that can be removed without damaging the art. Hope that helps.

Wonderful video! Thank you so much. I have so many irregular sized paintings I would love to frame but the cost of custom framing has always stopped me. I’m going to definitely try this! Can I ask what type of cabinet you use to store all of your items? We get a glimpse of it near the end of this video and it looks very functional!
I hope you try it. The cabinet is from Target. It’s technically a TV cabinet which is about 18” deep, I think. Inside there is only one shelf in each section, so I added the IKEA paper organizer at the bottom. That’s what the pullouts with the cork are inside. It’s called the Kvissle.
Is there a reason to keep the art from touching the glass or is it simply a personal preference?
If art or photos are pressed up against the glass, they can get stuck to the glass overtime. I think it’s because of moisture in the air. That’s why using a mat is standard because it puts space between the art and the glass. Hope that makes sense.
Only from personal folly, my artwork all different media) stuck to the glass after a time. A long time, I don't actually know: A year? 6 mos?
When I tried to peel it away, using heat, razors, water, solvent (yikes), etc., it damaged the artwork.
Thank you for this tutorial! The only trouble I'm having is my double-sided tape didn't successfully hold the foam core to the mat board. After a few days, it fell off within the frame. Have you had this problem before? I wonder if my tape wasn't strong enough (picked up easy tear tape by iCraft because that's what they had at my local Michael's). Have you ever used glue or something besides the tape around the edges?
Sorry, that hasn’t happened to me. The Scor-tape I use is extremely strong. I originally got it for collage and bookmaking projects, so I knew it would hold up for this. An acid-free glue might work, but I have not tried it. You may want to try adding more strips of your tape across the middle of the foam core and press it with something heavy (like books). I hope you find a solution that works.
Love this! I went to your supply list and couldn't find your WC paper slicer. Might have to get the 3 in 1 comer cutter just for my sketchbooks. I have a roll of Arches and could use a good cutter though. Do you mind sharing the brand/link?
I don’t think they make my paper cutter anymore. It’s over 10 years old. If it helps while you’re looking for one, mine is a rotary cutter with circular blades. The brand is Fiskars.
