I think it's funny how he discourages opening packs in the end of the video. It's like smoking crack in front of children and then 15 minutes later telling them not to do drugs.

+Sethsters 91 I've seen alot of boxes fall way short of even msrp, a set like this I would expect the value of the set to stay high for a few weeks. It's 110% not a good idea to put any money into boxes if you have to get one or more of the big 6 cards to break even or make a few bucks.

If you go to mtggoldfish, the author Saffron Olive does a great job explaining Expected Value of boxes. Wizards purposely makes sure no boxes are ever worth more than MSRP on average, and the EV (Expected Value of Eternal Masters was $200 before printing even began). Right now it will be a little lower, and since EMA is out of print already it will rebound quickly, but as it rebounds people will charge more and more for the limited boxes that are available. Hence the reason to never open sealed product and only buy singles.
If this Magic thing doesn't work out, you could always open a Honden dealership.

I played the booster box game for Eternal Masters, got a Karakas, Jace, Mana Crypt and a Senseis Divining Top, and a foil Relic of Progenitus. Could probably look through and find more cards of value but I bought the box with the idea of keeping all of the cards to build more commander decks in the future.

im sorry, but i feel that you severely undervalue the cards. FOr instance, FOIL hydroblast tcgplayer MID are 30 bucks as of this moment, 9:51 est 6/16/2016. You valued it at 10 dollars,and the same goes for pritty much every other card, i dont get why you value the cards so low. Seriously, if you are willing to sell chain lightnings for under 5 bucks, foil hydroblast for 10,etc. sell them to us! i would surely buy those cards at that pricing!

zebrilla yeah, but tahts the problem. tcg low is generally for used, damaged or creased cards. It´s true, you can find SOME nm cards at low, but MOST sell for mid that´s why people use tcg mid when determining the price of a nm card.
Foil hydroblast and pyroblast legitimately go for $30+ cash because they are first time foilings.

There were a few packs left in my LGS's open box, I opened one pack and got a mana crypt that I needed for EDH, the reason I'm so late is because I saw you pulled one before I got this and just clicked away ;-;
My box had less than 100$ worth of value.
Mythics were Worldgorger Dragon and Argothian Enchantress. Foil rare was a pitiful goblin trenches. Only 3 of the other rares were worth over 10$.

I hate the fact that it's just a handful of chase mythics pushing the price of these, and modern masters, boxes up so high. It would be a lot more consumer friendly to print more played commons and uncommons, and other "good" cards, that are played, to make 80% of the cards you get somewhat worthwhile, instead of 99% jank with the 1% chase that makes it unaffordable. Of course, that would mean encouraging players to directly buy your product, instead of selling to online retailers who crack packs to sell on the secondary market, which for some reason is where wizards think a more sustainable business model lies, relying on a secondary market they have no direct control over.
Case in point; when was the last time urzatron got a reprint? You know, those cards that are modern staples that an entire archetype of deck relies on?
Professor, when you made the switch to TCGPlayer from Ebay, you did so so that you could sell the cards cheaper, bringing the value needed to sell a card from $3.00 to $1.00. Raising it back up to $3.00 is kinda cheating. Based on the prices yesterday, at $1.00 or more, this box was worth close to $310. Just thought I would put that out there. Also, you say you are going for TCG Mid, which makes that foil Hydroblast $30, not $10. Saying "I can't sell it at that when there are ones out there for $10" is kinda BS, since you instituted the pricing. Eventually it would sell at $30 as the pickings got slimmer.
In europe a foil hydroblast/pyroblast is 10 € ~12 $. All the prices on this video, especially mana crypt, are put much higher than you'd get it from reasonably big sellers on magickartenmarkt in europe. Box would have been a 30-40 $ loss here
But he has to get the shipping cost back and then some for it to be worth it. You wouldn't sell a card that's worth how much you're paying on shipping would you?
that's not necessarily true. first weekend this set is out, prices are gonna start to dip. especially these foils. as the people who really want them will get them. then it'll be exactly what it is, people undercutting each other desperate to move their foils, for any value to squeeze out of their overpriced boxes of Ema. just because TCG mid is one thing, doesn't mean you can get even remotely close to it.
I kinda think the prof should just find a buyout site he likes, keep it simple. but, almost never make back cost of a box from buyout prices.
This is why I don't follow TCC anymore. How are you going to go from 3 bucks on eBay, to a dollar on tcg, back to 3 dollars on tcg. So much value is missed out on because of this.
Well, i can get a hold of it for something like 200$ here, but am still REALLY hesitant about going for it. And i'm pretty sure that when my desire to crack some packs will overthrow my greed, there will be none left whatsoever :p

No, it's $10. There's tons selling for $10, NM, on TCGPlayer and so that's all I can sell mine for. If I list it at $30, it won't sell. I need to actually recoup my money from this.

Disagree. There are actually tons of playables in this set (especially in comparison to mm2).
Might not be worth it to quickly sell of stuff like Swords to Plowshares, Brainstorm or Counterspell as singles. But it should not be hard to trade these cards of.

We were noticing that at our LGS. One of the players in my pod on release night picked up an almost grayscale Daze. I wonder how common this issue is in the set.

Professor how do you manage to sell your cards quick enough between boxes? Is it because you can easily can cards sold due to your TH-cam channel or can anyone sell so fast

I've had an idea, Professor. When you open the first box, you put that up as a video, then at the end tell us if you got enough to sell for a second box, then put up a separate video for each subsequent box. For example, I looked at the time of this video and the date it was posted and guessed that you opened the number of boxes that you did. That would keep an air of mystery and suspense about the whole game!
I might just try that next time.

Professor, how do you ship the inexpensive cards affordably? I find I can't make a profit on anything below 5 dollars on tcgplayer. as shipping is usually 2.16 and seller fees take care of the rest.

I bought 3 packs and pulled 2 mythic worth a combined value of 50 bucks, so I locked out alright.

love this set drafted twice now have a Jace, Sylvan library, chrome mox, and bunch of stuff in the $2-$10 range that should rebound once the set is off the shelves. The set is definitely well designed for drafting with one exception what is the point of infinite worldgorger mana combo without a mana sink like a fireball to take advantage.

Chidon0 with the life gain lands? you can also do infinite damage with a Keldon Marauder but that doesn't actually count as a mana sink to do something with the infinite mana that you can produce with animate dead world gorger dragon
Worldgorger is a mythic. Mythics weren't designed with drafting in mind.
I absolutely love the closeup shots of the cards! But something about your hand movement feels too "close", a bit distracting, as if your eyes try to look at something flitting in front of your nose. (this is on fullscreen). Maybe bring the cards into frame from the lower left corner, or bottom of the frame if you notice this as well.
I agree my eyes were trying to track his hands and it made for eye strain.
Just focus on the cards. Problem solved.
The Raven exerting extra effort where none is usually needed is not an ideal solution. It is only a workaround, and is sub optimal if other solutions that don't require extra effort and reduction of immersion exist.
Looking back, some of the prices here compared to nowadays are just wild. Chrome Mox at $15, Ashnod's Atar under $3, Sensei's Divining Top barely breaking past $20... Buying just one copy of each nowadays is easily anywhere from $120-$150. Miss the good ole' days...

Actually, it would be super interesting if you REDID this (i know its a pain in the $$$ so you prob shouldnt') but instead used the values of these cards NOW, just so we could see how much the values maintained/tanked/whatever since this vid was made.
a couple ideas for the booster box game. first, if you have an overflow in the first box (for example, you get $50 more than you need for the next box) would you consider adding that value to the second box if the second one came up short? it could help spice things up in the game. My second idea is would you consider doing each box in a separate video? it could be more fun to watch if you uploaded the first one while you were selling the cards from it, and that way viewers wont be able to tell how many boxes you're going to open just by looking the how long the video is. I feel this would add a little more intrigue.

In my first and only EMA pack that I cracked just for fun after a Commander tournament in my LGS, I opened a young pyro, blood artist, Ichorid....and MANA CRYPT FOIL.
Best 12€ spent on a pack!

lmfaoo i was about to comment "aw im sorry man your box was a bust, hope you got more out of another later on" then i saw mana crypt foil wasteland. NEVERMIND!
your second box really wasn't that bad. of course you're only looking at 3+ dollar cards for your value, as you're selling your cards. but as a collector who just wants access to a bunch of cards that are otherwise hard to come across, or someone who just likes cracking packs, you totally got your value. if you add up those 1-2 dollar cards, you did pretty good. you didn't even lose all that much to be frank. you could've got around 240-250 for the second box, then all those commons, uncommons, junkier rares, and junkier foils only cost you a whopping 30-40 bucks, which is pretty decent.
i have yet to see anybody lose more than maybe 40 bucks on a box so i'd say if you want to buy boosters, this is a decent set to do so.
fun note, i pulled a foil top in my box, and a karakas, regular top, wasteland... so i know how it is to get all your money in a handful of cards.

You did better than I did. While I did get a Sneak Attack everything else were valued at under $2.00. All in all my box was valued at under $80.00. Now I know when you buy a box the chances of breaking even is pretty low but between what I paid for to what I pulled Eternal Master let me down the most. After loosing a little over $200.00 of value it has soured me on buy boxes, at least for a while.
Please Professor please could we have some common Terry?! It's impossible for me to follow what's going on otherwise. Especially now that you have stopped even doing pings! Or at least I assume you have stopped doing pings, you might literally be pulling nothing but two dollar cards, or you could have joined your boxes together and I wouldn't know.

I had an interesting thought a while ago about a video you could do.
lately Ive been looking at the card Keranos, God of Storms, and I thought he'd be a great commander you could do a tech on. I know from watching your previous commander videos that you like subtle commanders, such as Anawon and Sygg; or non-commander-oriented strategies: with the exception of scion of the ur Dragon. Keranos is a great control commander; he can be a draw engine, a piece of removal, or if you're lucky, a finisher due to his body! And I know your videos take time, but I would love to see your take on a keranos deck.
I got one box at msrp and got really lucky. Jace, Karakas, and Mana Crypt were my mythics. I pulled a foil deathrite shaman and a foil entomb. I'm happy with my gamble, and I know when to stop. I'll take my cards and be happy with them.
I need token creatures for Blue and Green Decks. So far I haven't found any boxes with sufficient amounts of them. Except for Wizards of the Coast decks and people seem to not like those folks. The only cards I want from these boxes are Tharmogoyf, Elephant Guide, and Bestial Menace.
i had some crazy luck today....bought my first pack of EM and got Force of Will and (Foil) Goblin Charblecher boom....i won the EM lottery....

Is it me, or are textboxes "lighter" in this set? Comparing Necropotence to a C15 Phyrexian Arena, I've noticed that Necropotence's textbox has a lighter shade, and the textbox "details" (those weird splotches and bubbles ) are way less noticeable.
Disappointed with eternal masters in so many ways. at the 10 dollar pack price (if you can get it) I was really expecting it to be /super/ heavy with valuable reprints, and printed in a large quantity, to get more in my community excited about legacy and wants to build decks and we could play together.
This is why we can't have nice things.
From the box i opened with my friends i don't think we got the money back, but I got a FOW so i'm happy :D
A suggestion, can you put on a corner maybe the number of booster that you are opening, or how many you have left? for me that make it more interesting when you have few boosters left and are still missing like $30 :P
So in a Facebook group those blue uncommons with discoloration have been showing up. Appears to always be the last uncommon in the back and only blues.

Were you using mid or low pricing? I ask because the foil elvish vanguard is more than 3 dollars mid price, but not low price.
I have to use low pricing for NM cards or else they don't sell.

I know you were only selling 3$ or more cards with this set but if you count all the cards (1$ or more) you pulled in that 2nd box you actually hit 300$ almost so technically you should've at least been to box 3. What's the most boxes you have ever opened for a set with this series?
Have you considered doing each booster box that's part of the game as their own individual video? I love this series but I always feel as though the length of the video kinda spoils the outcome of the game, as each box generally takes up about 10 min. Keep up the great work Professor!
I don't understand what these Masters sets are designed to do. You can't just buy a box and hope to open value because it's such a huge gamble. The draft environment seems nice, but because of the limited print run it's double the cost of a normal draft and that's only if you can find a store that still has packs. Again because of its print run it doesn't bring down the cost of cards, nor does it really get that many cards into the hands of players. And it's hard to consider it an intro into legacy or vintage because of so many obvious reprints they left out.
I think I'll wait for Conspiracy 2 to go nuts with drafting. At least that won't be 50 bucks a draft.
I had been thinking of what "alternative" land to the life lands they could have printed that A: are common or uncommon, B: haven't been printed in a long time, and C: possibly have no foil version of them, and D: see some play in legacy, and I thought of it, and it dawned on me, what about the Fallen Empires double mana sac lands, those might actually see some play in certain combo decks and haven't been printed in a long time and to my knowledge aren't any foil versions of the card.
