  • New Zealand has some of the biggest logging trucks in the world working off-highway on private roads - which can see Gross Combination Masses of around 150-tonne at work, with the off-road doubles.
    This area also hosts a number of tri-drives which are used normally on stem-work, and are used for their traction abilities.

    The Australians and kiwis used to buy all their western stars including tri drives from the plant in kelowna bc until Daimler announced that they were closing the original plant and moving operations to the freightliner plant in Portland Oregon

      @@charlesmeihana6890 Cool mate. Yeah they were tough trucks. Funny cause the 501 I drove was for Gulf too. Worked for them carting gold ore in "st Ives" mine Kambalda just out of kalgoorlie WA back in the early 2000s they were a real good company to work for, I later got on one of there new mack titans, they had signature motors in them derated to 550hp cause they got better warranty with 50 less hp setting. They went real good though even at 550hp, all the trucks there running triples carting around 190 ton gross. All of their trucks were air start too. Sorry to hear your brother passing mate. You still logging up north? I live and work down south island and mainly do a bit of tipper work, earthworks, diggers and loaders etc.

      KLC. Kaingaroa Logging Company, was they're ? biggest customer in the 60s, they had a Fleet of Blue P16s were Caterpillar pwr C15, D550 HP. they were oversize an couldn't drive public rds.
      In the 80s when Fletcher Challenge purchased Kaingaroa forest off the Government, in the 89s they built a straight sealed Rd thru the forest from Kaingaroa town ship ? to their pulp mill in Kawerau, its called the million Dollar highway, it was wide as a football field, they purchased Kenworths from Canada, being a commonwealth country,
      they were 550hp I assume they were, what they did was, was downright wicked, the mounted another motor on the rearend of the
      Chassis, it gave the truck over 1000hp.
      I kid you not that trk could do 100mph plus.
      The reason being they could tow multiple trailers, an faster.

  • @aaronsanborn4291
    @aaronsanborn4291 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    We don't run pole trailers here in Maine but we do run tri-ax trucks with quad-ax trailers off road, often times double or even triple trailers pulling anywhere from 250,000 to a half million pounds. On asphalt we are limited to 100,000 pounds

      Tri drive means there are three axles and all three of those axles have power to them. (Having a larger fraction of the truck's weight on the powered axles gives you more traction.)
