This is from the musical "Kristina from Duvemåla". It is based on a book series by Will helm Moberg about the sewdish emigration to America. The musik was written by Björn and Benny from ABBA.
It is Björn and Benny of ABBA, since they wrote this musical. The clip is maybe 20-25 years old. Filmed in the US. So they were naturally ca 20 years younger. Helen Sjöholm and Benny still work together with BAO, and B&B of course still after about 58 years of musical partnership. Kristina who Helen plays "lived" in the 1800s and enigrated to the US as many Swedes did. The story of the musical... probably would explain the background more about her POV.
To be exact, this was in Minnesota, which is the state where most Swedes migrated to during the 1800s. Today, (if I remember correctly), 15-20% of Minnesotas population have Swedish heritage.
The song is about a woman whose belief in God is tested when her child dies. The lyrics are really profound. Written and conposed by Björn and Benny from Abba.
Yes this a great performance and a very beautiful, sad song❤ One of my absolut favourits. The solists from the musical ”Kristina från Duvemåla” travelled to Minnesota in the mid 90’s and performed this concert-version of the musical to descendents of people that migrated from Sweden to the US during the 1800’s and early 1900’s. (Because the musical is about people migrating from Sweden to the US in the mid 1800’s when Sweden was one of the poorest countries in the world). So the video is from that performance.
Yes, ABBA Björn and Benny has made this whole musical. 🎶🎶🙋♀️ Helene Sjöholm is a really national treasure. She sings all types of genres by the way. And Benny Andersson has her on different types of concerts.
Yeah, Helene Sjöholm really is the creme de le creme of female swedish singers today, and Kristina från Duvemåla so hit the jackpot with her and Peter Jöback because his voice and technique is also something extra ordinary.
She did not actually loose her husband. He is not dead. But after many births she was recommendend by the doctor not having sex anymore because she maybe not survive another more birth of a child. That is what she ment with taking away her husband from her.
And now its companion piece "Guldet blev till sand" with Peter Jöback which is also a beautiful piece of music. (He is imo one of Sweden's best singers.)
Yeah, they hit the jackpot with Kristina från Duvemåla with both Helene Sjöholm and Peter Jöback. Two of the best singers in voice and technique we have today.
It’s essential (if you’re not swedish) to watch this with subtitles and to read a bit about the musical its from beforehand. Otherwise you miss out on a lot of context that you need in order to understand this song. As it takes place in the mid 1800’s for an example that answers the questions you had about religion😊
Swede here. I'm a bit allergic to reaction videos because so many of them are just not providing any actual value. Your reaction videos however do add value to the original clips. And every bit of praise you gave to Helen for this performance, I give to you for your reaction videos. You are genuine and expressive just as Helen is. Good job mate, truly! 👍
She is not smiling... it's part of the singing technical placement of the mouth, to be able to articulate and maximize all nuances in her voice. If you see a singer "smiling" and showing teeth, they're probebly very trained and pros in they're performence. I sat right next to Helen on a train to Stockholm these summer. The music is written by Björn and Benny from ABBA.
The best musical ever been made! I have seen it over and over again! Yes, of course it is Benny Andersson and Björn Ulveus ex ABBA who has made it. And this is not the only amazing song from this musical . There are so many more! For ex. "Guldet Blev Till sand" and "Hemma"
Absolutely beautiful song.. There's a new tap on this song as well "du måste finnas - newkid" there's TH-cam videos on his performance.. brings people to tears.. this was released at the same time as my mom had a heart attack. Every time this song was played on the radio i was choking up.. 😭
Experienced this musical in Malmö in the nineties. The intermission is right after this song and you can imagine what people’s faces looked like when the lights came on. 😂 Sniffling and sitting in silence for a quite a bit of time before being able to go out for the intermission 🤩
Yes, the men from ABBA! They wrote this musical. It is a PHENOMENAL musical!! There are subtitles!!! React once more, please! And react to Peter Jöback ”Guldet blev till sand”! From the same musical. I was lucky enough to see this musical twice. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Besides watching this performance with english subtitles and then the song "Guldet blev till sand" from the same musical, sung by Peter Jöback (who, among a whole lote of things, sung the part of Aladdin in the Swedish translation of Disneys Aladdin). If you want to hear another great song with Helen Sjöholm I would recommend you watch her acapella version of "The circle of life" from the Lion King with the acapella trio Solala Sessions, as well as the song "come give me love" with the same group. Solala Sessions also did a great acapella version of The Beatles song "Penny Lane" together with the amazing Tommy Körberg. And, Yes, those where indeed Björn and Benny from ABBA, they wrote the song she sung.
You spotted Björn and Benny from ABBA from the get go, well done, few non Swedish do✌️❤️🇸🇪 They composed this musical about the Swedish people that emigrated to the US and went through hardship. She has lost her lost her child, the doctor has told her husband that another pregnancy will risk her life and in this song she's questioning God after what she's been and going through, begging him to exist. This concert piece of the musical is performed in Minnesota, the part of the US most Swedish emigrated to. Funny fact - Björn and Benny are very picky when they cast singers, they even composers for that particular singer's voice. There's a clip (with subtitles) with Peter Jöback from the very same concert, absolutely heartbreaking song, "Guldet blev till sand". Another example is the autodidact singer Tommy Körberg, Watch the old studio recordingof his "Anthem" and you'll be blown away. Thank you from a snow covered Sweden to you, your loved ones and all your subscribers ❤️🇸🇪 ps. I always fokus on the woman in the background in this clip, emotional yet so professional.ds
This is from the musical Kristina from Duvemåla set in the 1848s so it was long time ago. Kristina is very religious and only has her faith, when she leaves Sweden for a better life in America with her husband and family. She never wanted to leave in the first place so this is her reconciliation with God. She is angry, sad and doubtful
Her husband isn't dead, but their doctor has instructed them to not have any more children, because she wouldn't survive another pregnancy, so basically, since this is in the 1800s, there are no contraceptions, so they basically can't have sex anymore.
The Swedish production was better than the London and Broadway versions. Btw, she sings about a refugee, her child and husband dying, and the song is directly to God.
Yes, it's the guys from ABBA, Björn and Benny. They wrote the music. If you got this recommended it's a shame they didn't recommend it with the English subtitles. Helena is an amazing singer but you'd understand how emotional and impactful this song is a lot better if you understood the lyrics. And this is a musical based on a book so there's a big story behind it.
Björn and Benny from abba wrote this musical about people emigrating to USA in the 1800’s and she lost her family and doubts god. You should check out Peter Jöback - När guldet blev till sand from the same musical, he’s just as incredible. That song is about Robert telling Kristina and the kids about his and Arvid’s journey through California in the search of gold
i am listening at the audiobook now from the books where this musical is taken from. and remember that there was a tv series when i was young. i dont know if it exists in english but if it do i recommend it.
"Guldet blev till sand" (The gold turned into sand) with Peter Jöback from the same musical. With english subtitles th-cam.com/video/jzsUxUhBCtE/w-d-xo.html Translation of the narration in the beginning of the video: "...the gold fields in California. "But it was a hard and strenuous life that awaited Arvid and Robert. "What little gold they came across they exchanged for bank notes that turned out to be fake, worthless. "Arvid died during the journey, and after four years, Robert returned to Kristina and Karl-Oskar as a broken man."
This musical that Helen Sjöholm is involved in is about when Swedish people were forced to move to America in order not to starve to death, written by Björn and Benny ( Abba members) . The musical is called Kristina from Duvemåla and originally a book by Vilhelm Moberg that whritten a book called Utvandrarna = the immigrants. In the song, Kristina (Helen) wonders why God forced her to flee to another country? But she wonders: you must exist (that's what she sings)Kristina ( Helen) wonders why God abandoned her? Björn and Benny from Abba have done many musicals together
As others have said there is a version with English subtitles i really recommend looking it up and reading a bit about the musical so you get the context and also listen to the song Guldet blev till sand(the gold turned to sand) with Peter Jöback from the same musical(theres a version with English subtitles on that to). Another tearjerker and powerful song with Helen Sjöholm (from a movie ) id recommend is Gabriellas sång from the movie så som i himmelen (as it is in heaven) i believe theres a vid with English subtitles to that one to( her character in that movie is abused by her husband and he doesn't like that she's joined the towns choir, this song is kinda her breaking free from him)
I thought Björn and Benny looked quite old even when they were in their 20s :D. This is from the mid-90s. Anyway, this is from a musical they wrote, based on a very classic Swedish book, which is about how a couple emigrates to the USA in the late/mid 19th century.
Look at movies ”utbyggarna” is We They first is in Sweden and then going to Minnesota and ”nybyggarna” so You Will see its in Swedish but i think You can find subtitels its from Netflix and 1880 something ,, i love that movies with great actors.. ABBA guys did This musical ”Kristina from Duvemåla” its also great a great singer Peter Jöback who sing The Gold turn to sand ”Guldet blev till sand” 💙♥️ and Kristina sang This it was 1995 i think
The context of this song is that she's looking back on a very hard life, one where she is now a refugee and a foreigner, but she's OK with that. At this point she know that the child she's carrying will most likely be stillborn and that the pregnancy will kill her, hence "But You took my child; You are taking me from my husband." Or she possibly just delivered the stillborn child and now she's dying. Having a crisis of faith is very understandable in that situation.
Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson from ABBA made this song for the musical "Kristina från Duvemåla 1995" SUBTITLES when you listen, she question/has a fight with God.
"people don't sing like this anymore", says the man who's British and has a loooong history of musicals, classic theatre etc that is still very much alive in your country, haha.
If you like Helen's performance in this clip, please check this out! The same song, but my god her emotion in the performance is something else. th-cam.com/video/-7u377WROto/w-d-xo.html
Poor Kristina... She is living in poverty in Sweden with her husband and children. He keeps hounding her to leave, for the family to emigrate to the US, which is something over 1 million people did in the 19th and early 20th century. Life in Sweden is hard with failing crops and greedy landlords. But Kristina doesn't want to leave. Until tragedy strikes. One of their children dies due to eating too much after having starved. Kristina finally relents. They have many adventures before finding themselves settled on a farm in Minnesota. Her husband is happy and content, but Kristina never stops longing for her home, for Sweden. This song takes place after Kristina has lost another child, this time in a miscarriage. The doctor warns her that another pregnancy will likely kill her. That is what she means by "You (=God) took me away from my husband", that they can no longer be lovers.
Story is taking place in mid 19th century, Christianity was big in Sweden back then. Written in mid 20th century, Christianity had started to lose the grip and expressing doubts was fairly popular in literature. Worth noticing, both the main characters and the writer was from Småland, probably the county in Sweden where Christianity is strongest. Made to musical 1995 by Björn and Benny from ABBA. Also worth noticing, she take up her issues direct with god not trying to convince anyone else about his existence or lack thereof. That is the Swedish way to handle religion, take it with your god or if you need you pastor/priest/imam/rabbi and it is perfectly fine, start pestering me about your beliefs or lack thereof and we have a problem.
With English subtitles so you understand: th-cam.com/video/vk76_iqw-Pc/w-d-xo.html. It's a really powerful song. She is talking to God in desperation of loosing her faith. Du måste finnas is - you must exist.
Kristina från Duvemåla.. Is absolutely one of the best musicals ever made.. Better than a lot of Andrew Lloyd Webers musicals. Björn and Benny are musical geniouses. They know the Nordic sound. We also used Nordic folk music in my bands music. It should sound somewhat familiar to Brits.. As you are descendant´s of Norse.. So the sound shouldn't be too foreign.
good content. If you are willing to dive into Swedish music, there is a lot of it. Different genres where Sweden has made an impression. punk, synth, rap, pop, trance, death metal etc. Easy to take the most famous ones, but try your wings outside the box. Then there is a lot of content. edit, I can give you a lot of content on the Sweden theme. hook me up
Listening to this song with subtitles is really a must if you don't understand Swedish.
The video he watched at least, has shite subs.
Listen again with subtitles and You will understand and maybe get tears in your eyes❤
This is from the musical "Kristina from Duvemåla". It is based on a book series by Will helm Moberg about the sewdish emigration to America. The musik was written by Björn and Benny from ABBA.
Swede here. I can’t hear this song without tearing up. Here I am crying again, lol.
Watched Kristina från Duvemåla in the 1990s in Göteborg, and the whole audience were uglycrying at this point, myself included.

This is OUR Helen😘
I can also recommend "Guldet blev till sand" (The gold turned into sand) with Peter Jöback from the same musical.
I'd recommend "Hemma" too, from the same show and also sung by Helen. 👍
The song is about a woman whose belief in God is tested when her child dies. The lyrics are really profound. Written and conposed by Björn and Benny from Abba.

It's just a genuine good piece from musical theater. The lyrics are amazing

Yeah she has nothing to smile about really if you know what she sings about..
Always goosebumps from this one.
Awesome video. Im a swede, but a heavy metall fan, but this video got me.. its a beautiful song, and your response was just as beautiful.. keep ut up

One of the greatest musical voices ever to come from Sweden. And yes that was Björn and Benny from ABBA. They wrote this musical.
I get goosebumps just thinking about this performance, it's incredible
Yes, the men from ABBA!
They wrote this musical.
It is a PHENOMENAL musical!!
There are subtitles!!!
React once more, please!
And react to Peter Jöback
”Guldet blev till sand”!
From the same musical.
I was lucky enough to see this musical twice.

Gabriellas sång also by Helen Sjöholm is ont of my favorite musical Numbers Evert. You hade to listen to that…❤

Björn and Benny from ABBA wrote this musical "Kristina från Duvemåla" and yes Helen Sjöholm has an AMAZING voice
The woman in the choir right behind her is really feeling it.
Thank you for doing this one.
Yes its bjorn and Benny from Abba. They have wrote many many songs for other artists and musicals. This one is a swedish classic. Fantastic!
The ABBA guys wrote Musicals. This song is from the 1995 Musical 'Kristina från Duvemåla', which is about emmigrants in the later 1800s.
Helen Sjöholm is a gem. She really is.
This is from the musical Kristina from Duvemåla set in the 1848s so it was long time ago. You can have sex without vaginal penetration. But I guess they weren't very open minded back then.
@@simonlindhen1770 Also extremely religious, so sex without the chance of conception was probably seen as a sin.
The Swedish production was better than the London and Broadway versions. Btw, she sings about a refugee, her child and husband dying, and the song is directly to God.
Her husband isn't dying.
Brother you really need to give us another reaction with subtitles, its essential to understand this beautiful performance.

U need to read the lyrics and listen yea u will cry lol, she´s one of our best singer for sure!
Susan Boyle, if you remember from early Britain's Got Talent, actually made an English cover of this song about 10-15 years ago.
i am listening at the audiobook now from the books where this musical is taken from. and remember that there was a tv series when i was young. i dont know if it exists in english but if it do i recommend it.
I think she has also performed this song in English if you would like to compare. The Swedish version has a stronger resonance though. 😊
i just looked it up. the first movie was made 1971. and now i found that there is a new version made 2021.
Abba it is!
Proud from sweden ❤❤❤❤ amazing singer
I saw this musical in Stockholm 1999, and loved it 😊
"Guldet blev till sand" (The gold turned into sand) with Peter Jöback from the same musical. With english subtitles

"What little gold they came across they exchanged for bank notes that turned out to be fake, worthless.
"Arvid died during the journey, and after four years, Robert returned to Kristina and Karl-Oskar as a broken man."
Thank You! Next tought what are we doing? Helping, living or...

The correct translation would be The Emigrants.
I am so Great to be Nordic sami . whe allways stand for humans right😊 Human is human .Love you all. ❤🌍🕊
As others have said there is a version with English subtitles i really recommend looking it up and reading a bit about the musical so you get the context and also listen to the song Guldet blev till sand(the gold turned to sand) with Peter Jöback from the same musical(theres a version with English subtitles on that to). Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson from ABBA made this song for the musical "Kristina från Duvemåla 1995"
SUBTITLES when you listen, she question/has a fight with God.
Please listen to the version with subtitles 🙏
Musical version of Swedish classic Invandrarna. By BB of ABBA..
It’s ABBA. It’s a musical, Kristina från Duvemåla
There were many people who went to America from Sweden and the musical is about her Kristina
Video has subtitles 🙂
"people don't sing like this anymore", says the man who's British and has a loooong history of musicals, classic theatre etc that is still very much alive in your country, haha.
If you like Helen's performance in this clip, please check this out! The same song, but my god her emotion in the performance is something else. th-cam.com/video/-7u377WROto/w-d-xo.html
This one is amazing
Another Swede with great voice is Erik Grönvall. Listen to his cover of All by myself ❤
I’m not Christian but this song just gets me cracking up every time🥲
You are correct. Thats björn and Benny from Abba. They wrote the song too
You should listen to Gabriella’s song with same singer, Helen Sjöholm ❤
They DO still have singers like this - they are trained broadway and opera singers!

Song about doubting the existence of god and finally daring to put it into words.

Yes,Benny and Björn
10/10
There is an english version, ”you have to be there”.
I´m not sure but I think this also can be found with english suptitles. If you want to understand the lyrics better.
She ain't smiling dude.. Listen to it again with subtitles and you know she ain't smiling^^
benny and björn from abba in the crowd yes.
Helene Sjöholm is a real gem! The only ones who can really compete with her are Lara Fabian and Aurora.
There is also a english version of this song. th-cam.com/video/61ZIsdrlxnY/w-d-xo.html
You should react to Peter Jöback - guldet blev till sand from the same musical
She feels that pain
Yeah you should’ve picked the version with subtitles. It gives context before the song as well as provide the lyrics.
With English subtitles so you understand: th-cam.com/video/vk76_iqw-Pc/w-d-xo.html. It's a really powerful song. She is talking to God in desperation of loosing her faith. Du måste finnas is - you must exist.
at 00:26 you just paused at Björn Ulvaeus, one of ABBA.
This song can still make me weep like a baby.. And I am a grown man.
You can also listen when she sings in English is also available on you tobe or English text. very sad song
good content.
If you are willing to dive into Swedish music, there is a lot of it.
Different genres where Sweden has made an impression.
punk, synth, rap, pop, trance, death metal etc.
Easy to take the most famous ones, but try your wings outside the box. Then there is a lot of content.
edit, I can give you a lot of content on the Sweden theme. hook me up
