I remember watching Mirrormask with my wife in the Netflix DVD days. I thought "this sure seems to share a lot of DNA with Labyrinth". Good to know I wasn't off-base! I think the perfect Labyrinth sequel would have Toby Froud reprise his role as Toby, working in a dreary office, often troubled by nightmares of goblins. He hasn't seen his sister in years. Goblins start appearing to Toby in the corners of his vision in a "no no no, I worked this all out in therapy" kind of way. Turns out Sarah is now the Goblin Queen, and she is ruining the Labyrinth with all her years of regrets. What a resplendent sight Jennifer Connelly would be, dressed in her version of Jareth's raiments! Toby has to be the hero this time and assemble a ragtag group, like an elderly Ludo and an entire troupe of Didymus pups. It's gotta be done some day!
I thought the manga handled a sequel really well, when it came out Jennifer Connelly was the right age to be playing a unimaginative mid management office worker. Toby is in high school with inexplicable things happening to him, getting into trouble for it, and distant from his sister who used to be awesome and tell him fantastic tales about the Labyrinth. Eventually he's brought into the real Labyrinth to, du-dah! be the new Goblin King, coz Jareth's power started diminishing after Sarah bounced w Toby in the first movie. There's a cool plot with "ablations" made by the Queen of Cups, who wants the Labyrinth for herself and her daughters, a character called Moppet who looks uncannily like a young Sarah, and a new squad of sassy friends. It was so well fleshed out I really would've loved to see it made into a movie or series.
"What's your name, girl?" "Helena." "Helena?! Ew! You should have a name with a bit of daring and romance! Like 'Valentine'!" "And what's your name?" "Valentine!"
I saw the thumbnail and immediately knew this was about Mirrormask. I fell in love with this movie after my family rented it as a Netflix DVD. I was obsessed with it, and it shaped my art style all through my early teens.
I was OBSESSED with this movie as an early teen - just ad obsessed as I was with labyrinth as a kid! To learn they're connected is both amazing and unsurprising! The imagery of this film shaped my mind so much...
Something kinda funny, the baby Toby from Labyrinth is Toby Froud, the son of illustrator and designer Brian Froud who worked on Labyrinth. Toby grew up to become a puppeteer who has worked for Henson and creates among other things really amazing goblin puppets. The baby Toby from Labyrinth grew up to become the goblin king.
I'm so glad you covered this hidden gem of a movie! I saw it late night a looong time ago and fell in love with it, wondering why no one else never talked about it!
I am absolutely in love with mirrormask and consider it like a part of the Jim Henson studios "fantasy film trilogy". And the ost is great. Especially for explaing why everyone wore a mask.
@Roadent1241 I think it was mirrormask, labyrinth, and dark crystal. They aren't a trilogy as in the same universe but the fantasy they were doing. I kinda like how everyone has collectively agreed to ignore the manga.
I freaking *love* Mirrormask! I was a huge fan of The Sandman when it came out, especially the amazing and surreal collages Dave McKean made for the covers, and this movie is everything I could ask for from a collaboration between Gaiman, McKean, and the Henson Co. I have the illustrated screenplay too, and I'm glad Neil realized he couldn't make a direct sequel to Labyrinth work, because I don't think it needs one. None of the concepts I've read sound that great, and the manga sequel was one of the worst things I've ever read.
I came here from Nebula just to thank you for this video, one of your best yet. Your deft loving tour of Mirrormask and gripping details made this a delight.
I was born in 2004, so long after Labyrinth released, but I actually got to watch it in the 5th grade because of my teacher. He was really cool, and definitely an 80s/90s kid and often showed up stuff from his childhood. Things like animaniacs clips and of course, Labyrinth. I still think of him whenever someone brings up the movie.
Some films from this era in the same vibe: Dark Crystal The Last Unicorn Flight of Dragons Lord of the Rings (original animated version) Fraggle Rock (a show more light hearted)
"I DONT WANNA BE A WAITER!" 🤣😂🤣 "LOOK! AN IDIOT" 🤣😂🤣 This movie was great but also very surreal. I'd fall asleep to it every night for months. Favorite part was those weird jack in the box mannequins dressing her to the remake of The Carpenters 'close to you'😍
Omg mirror mask is one of my all time favorites! I did notice parallels between the two but I never would have thought it was a sequel! How awesome! Thank you!
As a lucid dreamer, this film is THE BEST depiction of dreams. There's a scene, for example, where the characters are relaxed. But one says something that leads them to suspicion, and immediately a song with lyrics announcing danger starts playing in the background ("Don't let them see you're afraid..."). The moment the characters realize this they are in danger, because they *believe* they're in danger, and that's how dreams work.
You just unlocked a memory with this video omg I need to watch this movie again, I barely remember it but I recognized the scene of her being dressed up and how much it unnerved me
At 2:33 I exactly went "OH THIS IS MIRROR MASK!" I got mirror mask and labyrinth as a box dvd set a million years back and I still think about mirror mask:)
I love MIrrorMask! Sadly, almost no one I know has ever even heard of it. I even managed to snag a statuette of one of the Mirrormask characters and I treasure that!
I thought there was an uncanny feeling about mirror mask. I didn't know it was supposed to be the same or a sequel to The Labyrinth. Although I do absolutely love both of these movies.
Thank you for the reminder! I saw MirrorMask back when it was released and haven't thought too much of it since. Re-contextualizing it for me as a quasi Labyrinth sequel is really cool.
As soon as you started describing the movie, I immediatley zeroed in on Mirrormask. That movie, in my opinion, was super artistic. It was an interesting viewpoint cause it felt like real life stop motion
I adore Mirrormask. I watched it when it was first released and it's definitely one of my favs. I had no idea about the Labyrinth connection but it makes sense now why I love it so much. I was obsessed with Labyrinth as a child. I still love it now as much as when I first saw it as a child in the 80s.
I found this movie by chance in a store as a young teen and picked it up cause the cover seemed interesting. Before then, I had never heard of it and I had no idea what it was. Afterwards though, I made all of my friends watch it with me.
I always felt a Labyrinth vibe in Mirrormask, and when I saw the thumbnail for this video I had to watch. It did not disappoint. I adore both films and the treatment of the subject matter was spot on. ❤
MirrorMask always sat in my mind as a spiritual successor to Labyrinth, in the same way as Stardust does for Princess Bride. I got to watch it again recently as it's available on TH-cam. I'm a much older dude than when I first watched it the first time and it's still a great fantasy getaway.
I discovered MirrorMask back in like '07. I had to watch it 3 times before I understood the plot and symbolism. I think it was just THAT visually overstimulating. I actually found the movie really scary at first tbh, just because my brain couldn't process the environments properly. Stuff like the city of light was very dim and dingey; the tentacle darkness did not seem out of place. I loved your intro for it though. I was trying to figure out if you were talking about anything I had seen, and was so excited when I guessed correctly! I didn't know about who wrote MirrorMask! It's been so long since I watched it last. But "Close to You" still haunts my mind every now and again. :D lol
I also loved this movie growing up, I got a copy off ebay and it’s worth at least a watch! I consider it an art movie just for the stunning visuals and fun world. I adore getting to watch it with friends!
I didn't forget. This is my favourite movie of ALL TIME!!! THANKS YOU FOR TALKING ABOUT IT!!! NO ONE KNOWS IT AND NOW SOME DO!!!!!! Dave McKean heavily influenced me as an artist, and my whole style and feel of my art changed forever after I picked it at random in nice the DVD store down the road (RIP)... I watched it ten times in three days. It shaped me as an artist and person, and I have always thought it a tradgey that known one has heard of neither Mirrormask, NOR Clive Barker's Abarat, a book series with a very similar vibe imo.
My sister had Mirrormask on DVD and it was one of our most rewatched titles. We lost our mother a year ago and I couldn't help but think of Mirrormask all the time as I dealt with the anger and hospital trauma of it all, though I was well into adulthood by then. I've spent the past year torn between wanting to track down a copy and worrying that rewatching it will shatter me into pieces.
I find it difficult to see any affiliation of the Labyrinth. Considering there was no Goblin King. But I loved Mirrormask for what it is. It felt like alot of love was put into making the film, and I'm glad you covered it!
Definitely will be giving it a watch. I grew up watching Labyrinth with my mom sooooo many times. Also I really like the channel so far and have now subbed 👍 keep up the good work 😁👍
I love mirror mask! I love hearing about someone else also talking another this wonderful movie! Also I’m shocked that is was a sequel to labyrinth. I paused this looking for the movie that you said at the beginning but gave up and continued. Happy to know I have both movies in my library ^_^.
My dad and I loved this movie but it hit a bit too close to home because my beloved mom (and his dear wife and best friend as well as my friend) died due to uterine cancer. Those scenes were a bit hard for us to watch, but strangely, I think watching them together helped us heal a bit.
Its wild to me that so many people don't know about this movie. It is one of my all time favorite movies and is what got me hooked on art and fantasy my whole life.
the outfit change in MirrorMask is my favourite scene, I understand why the scene would be hyped. It stayed in my head since I was a kid ever since I saw the movie without remembering the movie's name. It definitely sticks in my core memory
My sons and I have loved Mirror Mask since they were little boys. Now they are all adults and we all still love this movie. And even my young grandson loves it too! The riddler Sphynxs are amazing. And riding on flying books are such fun.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Both MirrorMask and Labyrinth were important movies for me as a teenager. I identified with the heroines so much, I retreated into my imagination as a way of dealing with school, loneliness, and depression. I love seeing the community in the fanbase today
I watched this movie at a local art theater. I was one of the only people watching it... It was on film even if I remember correctly. It was such a good experience.
I had no idea they were related but I love mirrormask. I came across it a very long time ago. None of my friends cared for it after I coerced them to watch it, so this exposure for it makes me so happy 🖤
Oooohhhh! That explain so much! I had heard a rumor about this being a sequel to Labyrinth, but aside from a few similarities, Icouldn't see how this was and thought it was just that, a rumor. Still, so many things have just become more clear.
I had no idea that Mirrormask existed. I live in Germany and it has literally never been on TV since I can remember. I've seen the Labyrinth. I've loved it for many years and i'm glad I learned about this movie as well. It looks and sounds beautiful. Makes me wish I could've discovered it sooner. But i'll share this knowledge with others now. 🎭
Ayy this was a movie that was at the tip of my tongue for a long time! I think I saw the ending on TV or something a long time ago out of context and I remembered the imagery of the main character being body switched but never figured out what the movie was. Thanks so much for helping me with a memory mystery!
I only realized what movie we're taking about once you started describing the plot. I LOVED this movie. Pretty sure we rented it, maybe even bought it from Blockbuster, because I was so in love with their version of "Close to You" I watched it over and over again, back to back, just to learn the song. After so many years, this movie feels like a fever dream. It felt so underground, I'm surprised so many people remember it and loved it. Just one of those surprising Blockbuster gems you stumble across, I guess--like The Rise of Leslie Vernon. Was anyone else hitting their goth stage right when they saw this?
Definitely a different idea but after watching your video I realized I had a similar feeling of fantastical whimsy in both movies. Thanks so much for the reminder of something rooting in childhood.
Ah, I suspected you were talking about Mirror Mask. When this came out my sister and I heard that it was a spiritual successor to Labyrith. We had to go to an art house to see it since it wasn't showing at the major theaters. It was definitely good, but I felt it was quite different from Labyrinth. It's quite a bit more abstract. and perhaps resembles Coraline more closely. That isn't a bad thing at all, but you know how expectations can mess with an experience.
This is not just the "sequel" to Labyrinth, but it is the conclusion to a trilogy. The 1st was 'The Dark Crystal', then 'Labyrinth' with 'MirrorMask' the conclusion. I have seen this movie several times, and I love it. The surreal imagery, the bizarre masks, the cool and quirky soundtrack (especially that very twisted rendition of 'Close To You'). I love the dreamlike world of the light and dark cities. And the weird creatures, dripping with symbolism. Believe me, this is not one I have missed. And Labyrinth is my all time favourite movie. I've literally seen it so many times, I've lost count.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I do love how the restrictions placed on it made its aesthetic that much more interesting and unique.
I am so happy to see the comments filled with people who also loved mirror mask. I too saw it as a young teen and loved it immediately. A big favorite in our family and a great spiritual successor to labyrinth
I went into this wondering if you were talking about mirrormask, and I'm glad I was right. For me this movie was a random purchase to watch on my Playstation Portable for a long train trip, bought mostly because of the Jim Henson association. Sadly, despite loving it and watching it over and over back then, I have never seen it in any other format, and remember very little of it. I never would have guessed it started as a sequel! The Jim Henson TH-cam channel posted some clips from it very recently, and I think the combination of this and that means I should hunt it down to watch soon.
80s baby here. I grew up watching Labyrinth, but have never heard of Mirrormask or seen it. I don't see a connection at all but I like that its different from Labyrinth.
Why do I remember this movie? Not because I've watched this movie, but because I've seen it as a music video? Of which I can't recall anymore because it must have been almost 20 years ago.
Me at 2:50 : Wait a minute. That's just the plot of Mirror Mask! It's been years since I watched it! Need to see it again because I've only seen it 3 or 4 times.
Mirror Mask was way more abstract in it's presentation, which threw me off in having any relatability. It presented more familiarity than the goal of connection to the previous Labyrinth. It was its own uniqueness overall.

Oh wow,it makes sense. Great movie either way

I LOVE THE MIRRORMASK!! this makes so much sense!
The mechanical dolls have lived in my head rent free since I first saw it lol
Mirror Mask is my absolute favorate Movie. I didn't know it was connected to the Labyrinth. Thank you for sharing.
That explains the threefer. Now if I could figure out how Dark Crystal fits into everything of the other two...
I'm so glad someone else is acknowledging MirrorMask! I swear, any time I bring this movie up, they look at me like I'm nuts. lol
Haven't watched MirrorMask in years, but I loved it. Will have to watch again soon.
I’m so glad someone’s finally mentioning mirror mask
I liked Mrs Bagwell and her cats in this film
This is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I do love how the restrictions placed on it made its aesthetic that much more interesting and unique.
I remember when it came out and I did like it. Considering how much my wife loved labyrinth, I’m surprised she didn’t like it
This was such a fever-dream of a movie, loved every moment of it when I first bought it on DVD all those years ago, still love every moment of it now!
I am so happy to see the comments filled with people who also loved mirror mask. I too saw it as a young teen and loved it immediately. A big favorite in our family and a great spiritual successor to labyrinth
Love this movie! This is such a marvelous film. You made a magnificent point to show the beets perfectly.
The scene when she is transformed into a mechanical doll makes me cry each time.
I do not think I ever heard of this movie before. And I was 44 years old when this movie was released.
Omg i just got a huge rush of nostalgia! Brb watching this movie for the first time in years lol
I KNEW IT ! I used to wear Mirror Mask inspired masquerade gowns to the Labyrinth Masked Ball in Hollywood, California every year
This channel is so good 😊🩷🩷🩷
Great video.
I love Mirrormask, the soundtrack itself is amazeballz. I'm so glad it's starting to get the praise it deserves
I've seen this movie and i never would have thought it was a sequel to labyrinth.
I never knew this was actually connected to Labyrinth, but I've always watched it as a double feature with Labyrinth!
