I'm a pianist. It was hard for me to play in all 12 keys 2 years ago. But someday my friend told me to push myself up to start on practising n learning all 12 keys. And turned out it wasn't that hard 😅😅😅 trust me!! 😂 Just practice and practice and practice and keep practicing, put some efforts, and always remember to do anything as if it's for Jesus. For me it will be so much better playing piano without the need of transpose button, there will be no worries about whether it's an electric or acoustic piano I'm gonna use, I'll be ready at all times. God bless us all, keep doing the good work ❤️

If you paid your hard-earned money for your instrument, you can do whatever you want. Unless someone is looking at your fingers they have no idea what you're doing. I personally play in all 12 keys. But I used to heavily depend on the transpose button, especially in difficult gospel music. I started to challenge myself when I started playing with live bands, because it became too difficult to remember what transpose button I needed to hit to go to the next song. And also what helped me was learning all new songs in the original key as the artist. But I feel before you bomb a song in a live service, use the transpose button!! And then go back and practice it later. On rare occasions I've had to use it since I've learned playing all 12 keys. Mainly when a guest speaker comes in and do a solo I never heard of in a key like C or A that I'm not overly fluent in. And at the same time everyone's goals are different, some people have extremely busy lives and are not trying to be a professional musician. Just trying to assist when needed, and that's okay..

I want to start by saying I have no dog in the fight. I can play in all 12 keys. I grew up playing on an old upright piano in a gospel church. My question is, why doesn’t anyone ever keep the same energy for guitar players that capo????

When I taught myself how to play piano years ago, I learned all 12 keys and never regret that decision because now when I play and someone or myself goes into a song and it's not in its original key, I can play it almost with no effort! I encourage you to learn all the keys as well as the Nashville number system and you'll realize how simple it is to play almost any song! I don't even know where the transpose button is on my church keyboard lol

Im gonna knit pick. Lolol 12 major keys. 12 minor melodic, and 12 minor harmonic. I am classically trained through the rcm in canada. The higher the levels, the faster the tempos, and more intricate techniques.

So many people are giving unnecessary hate to the transpose button. I'm just learning the keyboard and from the way I see it, it's an assistant for situations where you are unable to fluently play in a particular key. If you're obviously stumbling then by all means, use the transpose button. But be sure to practice the key that song threw you off in when service ends.
I know my C and C# keys but imma be relying on transpose on Sunday until I can play all twelve just as well.

I think there is one legit use of the transpose button. When I practice at home, I practice by playing along with a recording. But my band often performs songs in a different key from the recording. So when I'm practicing at home with a recording I use the transpose button so I can practice the song in my band's key while playing with a recording that is in a different key. When I'm playing with the band, I always play in the correct key without the transpose button. (Alternatively, I could pitch-shift the recording, but that's a pain to do and it always sounds weird if you pitch-shift by more than one whole tone.)

Never in my life that i used that FORBIDDEN Transpose Button..
I pushed myself to learn all those 12 keys in the piano..
And other progressive chords as well..
Even in guitar..i never used a Capo while playing..
Capo is like a Transpose Button also..
i took it as a Professional way..
    that's my own opinion..

Guilty as charged, your honour, with the crime of using that button 😮
    But I don’t only play in C, I can play in G also ! 🤓
So I don’t have to transpose as far to get to the song’s key - perhaps then my sin isn’t as bad as it could be ...😬😬😬
What about using a capo on guitar (I do that too) - isn’t that exactly the same thing ???
Let me say that I’ve never felt at all bad or inadequate for doing either of those things - not for a moment. And I’ve no intention to change that now.

Do you think being able to play in different keys help the musician to think differently in each key like when I play something in Fmajor and then I play the "same" thing in Amajor I may play the same basic chords but maybe change the extensions a little bit maybe I would improvise a little bit differently.....Is that just me or is it true for other musicians as well? Cause if it's true then being able to play in different keys can help sound somewhat less "boring" What do you say?

I think that a better metaphor is that the transpose button is like a spare tire. You might occasionally need it ( like when the band leader asks you to change keys at the last moment and you can’t transpose a difficult chart in your head) . But you shouldn’t drive around on a spare tire every day ( they aren’t made to be on a car long term)

    • @TheGuitarrmann

to allow yourself to get so frustrated about someone using the transpose key is unnatural. Guitar players use a capo. Ok. So they're never gonna play at the Metropolitan Theater. A person may be a whiz at playing an instrument, like yourself, but have no business leading worship, and then there's the person who only knows 6 or 7 chords, but can bring a congregation directly into the presence of God. Which is more important? No need to answer me. I know the answer already. Blessings.

Transpose is my life, without it I would be cry. I've learnt through watching tutorials and some assistance from someone in our church, couldn't afford lessons. We have one keyboard that the church bought and I don't have my own keyboard at the moment.
I'll definitely work on not using it.

I was taught to learn a song three keys up and three keys down from the original key. If you understand the number progression of a song very well then there is no need for a transpose button.

What would be the best "one" key to learn? I'm thinking B major.
I realize the key of C will be best for learning music theory but I'm talking about solo piano and using the transpose button for everything. Remember, I bought the whole keyboard. lol

I’m not a TH-camr, but I almost made a video to respond to this…instead I’m going to leave this reeeeeally long comment.
I debated on even saying anything, but my wife is the worship pastor at our church, and I play piano (formerly a drummer, but not a great one) and we have a pretty good sized church, 2 Sunday morning services around 500-600 each which is crazy for our area. Our worship is modern, but we like to shake things up and throw a hymn in here and there. Our church is diverse, non-denominational, and we have a lot of people, servants and attendees, who have been hurt by the church.
We had a previous worship leader who had been a guitarist for the largest church in our state, a very big, well known church, and he used to complain about how hard they were on their teams, but then he also brought that same atmosphere to our church, dictatorial in nature with “no music stands”, “no iPads”, “memorize all your music”, and they played everything with tracks, but not the true way where you can loop sequences and still have an atmosphere that could shift if it needed to. Very presentation forward. It was masked as excellence, but what it really was is seeking perfection.
He didn’t stick around, for varying reasons, but he left behind several musicians who felt that same way, these were full time musicians who did music as their jobs, played and recorded in Nashville…solid to say the least. But he left my wife in charge…
My wife is as talented and anointed as anyone I’ve ever heard at a concert, in a church service, or on any recording. Yeah she’s my wife, but I’m one of many who feel that way. She is supremely talented, but she’s also meek, compassionate, and most importantly humble. (She’d die if she knew I was saying these things about her on a TH-cam comment).
The team changed and shifted over the course of several years. The “good” musicians left, and in came more “good” musicians…but they needed music stands, or iPads, or capos, or…transpose buttons. But surprisingly enough (not really), the worship got…better?
People could tell a difference, the heart of worship in the team was evident. Gone were those who felt that Sundays were just another gig…and the few who trickled in who tried to reestablish that mindset quickly moved on, not because of anything we did, but just because they didn’t fit the culture. Not one person was ever directly asked to “step down”, but many did…as they most likely should have.
    Cue…me.
My wife and I have been together for 21 years. We’ve served together in varying capacities, but never really in music. Like I said I played drums, but more as a hobby, and I noticed that we were having a hard time finding keys players who stuck around or were dependable. So one night almost 5 years ago now I asked my wife to start showing me some basic stuff, and told her I’d try to start learning and help if I could. My wife also has a music degree and is classically trained…but this ain’t about her.
I quickly learned how to play in C and how to use the transpose function, and I was off to the races. After playing for around 2 years I found myself running the click track in Ableton, and calling cues in the talkback. I’d become an impromptu unofficial MD…but I was still playing pretty much everything in C.
As I got more comfortable I began experimenting with the C scale, picking out lead parts from popular songs by ear, and even adding my own percussive flair to songs. I love playing, and I love worshipping with our team, who is really more like family.
Fast forward to a couple of days ago and this video pops up in my recommended, and I start watching…and I’ll be honest, I didn’t make it past the 10 minute point and I had to stop. The feelings of inadequacy, counterfeiting, and failure were so strong. I felt judged, humiliated, and I was kind of angry. All from a TH-cam video?
Guys…I don’t know anything about you, but from what I gather you’re both very proficient musicians and have probably been doing it for a long time…but this podcast is called “Worship Leader Hangout”, which leads me to believe you are followers of Jesus, and this…this is not the way.
In Spirit and in truth. Worship, in Spirit and in truth.
Is transposing “lying”? No, it’s not, because if anybody could play keys and transpose, then everyone would, and we’d have an abundance of keys players who could get the job done. This is throwing out whether or not these people are proficient at timing (also very important), and more importantly, if they are truly worshipping God…or playing a gig.
Worship Music in general has become such an elitist culture because of social media and the internet and TH-cam. Anyone and everyone has an opinion about this song or that song, this vocalist or that band…but where is the focus on WORSHIPPING GOD?
My Nord stage 3 that I play is chock FULL of my tear residue from moments where I’ve been unable to see to play because of the tears flowing in a powerful encounter with the presence of God, and almost every time that’s happened, that little red transpose button has been lit up.
I will also add, I work a full time job, not music or church related, sometimes 60+ hours a week, and freelance in addition to that as a graphic designer and other things, and I don’t get paid to play worship music…I volunteer to do that…and to have someone tell me I’m lazy for “taking the time” to learn all 12 keys…no sir, I’m going to “take that time” and spend it with my family. I’m going to take my wife on a date instead of practicing keys, I’m going to teach my daughter how to drive instead of practicing keys, I’m going to rest…instead of practicing keys. Why? Because I believe with my whole heart that God is totally fine with that. He knows my heart, and while you may judge me for what buttons are lit up on my keyboard, He’s looking on the inside and seeing where the music is truly coming from, and I pray when He sees that He is happy.
Our team is full of crazy talented people, people with jobs and families, and people who don’t do music full time. Does that make churches with full time paid musicians “better” than us? NO…it doesn’t. Those paying churches are actually the minority, they just have the biggest platforms because of their financial situation. There are way more churches out there with one singer and an acoustic than there are churches with $500,000 yearly worship budgets.
You’ll probably never read this, but if you do, or if anyone else does, know this…God does NOT care if you transpose. He cares about your heart. If you’re trying to learn but don’t have time, keep trying. If you are comfortable playing in one key and play with confidence, anointing, and authority, keep playing.
If God can use a stutterer, an adulterer and murderer, or any of the other countless flawed individuals we see in scripture…He can definitely use someone who knows how to transpose.
Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

It's Better To Play In One Key & Use Transpose, Than To Play A Bunch Of Bad Chords Trying To Play In Other Keys!!! Especially If You're A Drummer & Not A Keyboard Player. so many things to say about this. But I won't say some of them.
If you know someone that has had the surgery then you know they have tried everything and have been on the diet for over a year before the doctor lets them do the surgery it's not an easy way out it's pain its work it's not a one day thing. Be better.
On the other front this does sounds like gatekeeping. Do you play a violin on the keyboard instead of learning violin? Do you use a keyboard instead of a real piano? Is it important to grow and learn as an artist? Absolutely! but don't equate another way of doing something or a new way of doing something for just being lazy. Transposition has it's place. Just like the transposition key does. Tools are put on keyboards for a reason.

I told him all you woosies can use your capos. But I'm old school,(they were all 20 something and I was like 49) Anyway, it made me into a much more competent musician. Not like we have today.

A person may be a whiz at playing an instrument, like yourself, but have no business leading worship, and then there's the person who only knows 6 or 7 chords, but can bring a congregation directly into the presence of God. Which is more important? No need to answer me. I know the answer already. Blessings.

Pay for the right type of musician and there won’t be a problem.

How many churches do you think are out there that can afford to pay “that type” of musician? Because I’ll tell you, most of “those types” of musicians believe themselves to be worth their weight in gold.
Now how many churches do you believe are out there that can’t afford to pay musicians, so they accept, allow, and welcome volunteers?
Is the quality of the worship dictated by capo/no capo, transpose/no transpose?
Answer these questions honestly…then look at your comment. 🫤

@@ryanbanes6029 knowing how to play in all keys is a basic skill. A church doesn’t need to pay them their weight in gold for that skill. If the musician doesn’t know how to play in all keys, they need to learn in six months or they shouldn’t be the musician . There are too many resources available for nothing that will help a musician gain this skill. As far as the pay, churches will do what they want and I would not waste time debating anything about that.

@@TheGuitarrmann I also happen to be an architect by profession. If I were selected to design a cathedral for worship and I ended up building a mediocre hut that barely, my fellow designers would absolutely critique the result. You can make the correct argument that God's presence can be felt by congregants in that hut. You would not be wrong and I would agree with you because spiritual matters are not measured by natural means. However, there is something to be said for doing something for God at the highest level possible. King David's excellence in song writing had an impact. Solomon's decision to utilize the best materials and artesian for the temple was not without reason or consequence. Excellence, continued development, and attention to detail should be required when doing anything for God. A keyboard player using a transpose button for 20 years (as is often the case) does not reflect that. Only in church do we set the standard so low and remain content.
In the end is it a major issue? Absolutely not, but as worship musician I believe it is important that we challenge and push each other to do a little bit more every day. That's why I follow this channel. This is a forum and platform for discussing the best ways to do that. It's what makes this channel unique. It's not just about music, it's about equipping the worship leaders and musicians. Was my comment harsh? Perhaps, but I hear much more direct critiques in other artistic arenas. Stay blessed brother.

Regarding a capo, I do understand that there is a difference in that vs a piano functionally. It's mechanical while the keyboard is electronic. You can't transpose on a piano or most organs. Similar analogy but not quite the same.

@@buiefamily5454 Thank you for your passionate, yet respectful response. I do agree with you in that we should give God our best. I guess what I'm saying is what one person gives cannot be compared to what another gives because only God knows each individual's true ability and capability. The bible tells us, let each man be convinced in his own mind. And iron sharpens iron. May God continue to richly bless you and yours.
