You can also get sheets of home insulation foam (usually blue or pink) at big box home improvement stores like Lowes or Home Depot. Though the thickest they carry is usually 2 inches, you can layer several pieces together with contact cement or Gorilla Glue to make a thicker block.
I've just discovered your channel and this video. Great illustration and this is a solid instructional video. I look forward to reviewing your videos and learning more about this craft. Thanks.
Nice , Thank you . I'm going to be attempting a large dragon head and partial neck wall mount so it will mount like a trophy on the wall . But i really didn't want to resort to any of those heat cutting tools . So thanks again , this helped a lot :)
Do an internet or yellow pages search for suppliers in your area, because shipping of large foam is incredibly expensive. Besides foam and sculpture suppliers, you can try boat dock dealers, or large construction companies who do a lot of concrete and cement work (They use large blocks as filler). Art Depts at local universities may also know of local suppliers. "Universal Foam Products" (Google it for their website) sells large blocks, but have a $250 minimum order.
Very informative video. I'm a sculptor and I usually work in 4'-6' tall pieces. Where can I find larger blocks of styrofoam or polystyrene? I've checked online but all I can find are sheets or much smaller blocks. Thanks.
Can you recommend anywhere to get larger, solid pieces of styrofoam? The cheapest I can find is over $100 for a 2' cube, which is WAY over my budget! I'm looking to make two cow skull-inspired masks and I need something to use as a base, so foam has been my first thought. It just seems so hard to find in large, solid pieces.
I was wearing a synthetic fleece jacket when rasping with the cheese grater tool and got covered in Styrofoam (EPS) particles. You didn't seem to have that problem. Were you wearing a cotton T-Shirt?
I'm just a highschool student but I need to make a large model of a soda can for a school project and I wanna use foam. How would I go about doing that?
I don't think it'll be easy to carve with Styrofoam, but you're good. I want to see the overall completion and detailed shape. Thank you for the good video.

Eric Hart your art is amazing sir and thank you for the video, what is the tool you are you using at 2:50 ? , i have a question about some foam shaping, im a boxer and trainer and im making some custom punch mitts for coaching, im trying to create a concave front but since its for punching i cant weaken the foam and it is very high density, i also need to make the surfaces very smooth , i can show you pics on my google plus page for more information, im sure youre busy but i would pay you for your quick advice and i would be in debt to you forever, please let me know and keep up the good work no matter what, thakns again for the video
im using a diff styrofoam its teally dusty when I take it out... I think I shouldny use this one.. its easy to cut too but if a point is too thin it crumbles a little
Puckythecat undercards I hope you found one! But usually they sell them at hardware stores (if you're in the States, I guess Home depot and such) but here they sell them even in regular hypermarkets.
I’m definitely going to have to wear earbuds blasting Slayer while cutting and carving this stuff because I can’t handle the squeak. Uuugh. Lol Like nails on a chalkboard.
darkwriterxx94 I don't know about the dangers (I tried googling but didn't find anything specific) but someone suggested to treat it as any other dust and I think that's a good advice.

Yes you do need to wear a cotton shirt. Don’t where sweat pants either. Jeans and tee shirt are best.

what covers for the shell and foam do you use for this?
What pound polystyrene are you using .9lb, 1.5lb or 1.8lb and why, cost or because its better to shape with. Thanks
+Jimmy Ward It was just 1 lb, it's the kind my scenery department uses and they always have small chunks left over so I get it for free.
could you please make a tutorial on how to cut a square piece of foam into a ball shape? thaks
cut of the corners and then rasp and sand it into a shape
which sand ppr you are using ?

Do you offer any workshops or classes?
What kind of brush did you use?

How much you charge for armor? Like cos play armor?
It depends what you want made. At the moment, I'm not taking on any outside work because I just had a baby.
+Eric Hart wow you had a baby.... I thought men couldnt have a baby....JK
What kind of foam do you use? Do you know if epoxy will melt this type of foam?
This is EPS foam, or expanded polystyrene foam. Epoxy will not melt it.
this is pilystyrene styrofoam, but it is not high density and high density foam is beter for sculpting
where can I buy foam at a good price? I have searched and its all so expensive.

if you have a block off cut, tell your friend "you're wanted on the foam"
I fucking hate the sound these things make. Eeeek.
I kinda do too, but it's totally worth it because in the end you can play in with the leftover foam.
EdNorty I love it
