Hand carving a giant polystyrene / styrofoam dragon carving, created for Dragonforce's 2019 Europe tour. Commissioned by Bex Lowe, the sculpture stood at 2 meters tall, and was later coated in glass fibre and artworked.

there is something about designing things the old-fashioned way that brings more satisfaction to an end result of a project that you will never feel doing the project with a 3D printer.

Polystyrene is by far my favorite sculpting medium. I enjoy it so much. Maybe one day I to can do it for a living.
What do you sand it with? I know you’re carving it with a hot knife
@@SaraKellyhiphope I switch between sandpaper and a sanding block. Both worth just fine. However make sure you have a mask and a shop vac ready.

I am impressed by everything but above all, two main things.
1) The level of respect and trust to allow everyone to carve and following the entire team's vision is awesome
2) During carving I don't see anyone blowing away or dispersing the shavings
I like the way its hands on no easy way out, like using 3d printers
Though some projects absolutely demand the need for CNC cutting or 3D printing, we enjoy creating things by hand much more. It's what we love doing! And actually tends to work out much quicker and more cost effective in many cases. Particularly when making changes.
Love watching your videos, but love watching you guys having fun, even more!

I'm from the US and just came along your videos. Thank you for showing your process. I have a huge project I'm begining. They size of the finished sculpture is the biggest one I've attempted. I've been trying to decide whether to sub out the large carving or do it myself. Did not budgeted in sending the design out. Your videos have given me renewed confidence that I can do this on my own. im impressed by the fact that you generally don't rely upon a boting computer to do the carving i.e- "computer guided lathe" instead your old school, (though this must take much longer) I also use foam for sculpture, BUT I use house insulation foam, i'm finding that this doesnt stick well to it'self l not even with hot glue or expanding foam, I don't supose you (or anyone watching can tell me where I can get whatever glue they use to stick the silver thermol sheet to the back of the foam sheets, which is a VERY strong adhesion)
your collective work NEVER disappoints incidently, your all very talented & not afraid of a challenge I see.
You'd actually be surprised in regards to the timing. Bearing in mind there is no existing computer model of this dragon, it's simply a concept images taken from a drawing on the album cover. Therefore someone would need to create the 3D file, have this approved by the client. Then handed over to the 3D company to machine. Each of those processes alone could take anywhere up to a week or more depending on any backlog. In regards to hand carving, Aden can get straight on and probably have this carved in a matter of days. It's then easy for the client to request changes if needed, and for Aden to spend another day then making them.

Hey David thanks for watching. We have a projector. But with this project, the design kept changing, which meant transparent reprints,, and we're constantly moving the sculpture around out of position anyways. We use it on other projects though
This is a very metal Dragon! I approve of the level of dancing in this video!
Could I request a video showing an overview of the 2019 projects with maybe a start and end date just to help your loyal subscribers get their heads around your workflow for projects.
That would be a bit of an undertaking in itself! Sometimes tricky to work out when a project actually started started, when it was finished, and when it was actually needed by, without needing to scroll through a ton of emails!

WOW,just getting into sculpting with clay,still do a lot of drawing and a bit of wood carving and just came across your vid of the dragon.
Absolutely fantastic you guys and girls,just blown me away,noticed one of the artists saying the original drawing you noticed a bit more raised on the snout,and I can see you’ve used the shavings if you like,but what did you mix it with to bulk the snout up a bit more.

I always notice you guys working on multiple projects at any given time like this dragon, fireplace, hearts, pumpkin, Mr. Skinny Legs, etc. I know some projects are more of a rush than others, the scale, or your waiting on approvals that sort of thing but I'm curious on how much time generally speaking it takes you to do these projects. On average, 2 weeks or a month? Thanks for another great video you guys rock! 👍
To be honest, there is no average. Some projects that only take 2 months, we have 6 months to build, so we take on other work in the meantime too. Other projects that should take a month, we squeeze into three weeks if we really have to because that's all the time the client has, and we feel we can call in extra hands to achieve it. Each project is different, has a different deadline, and requires a different amount of work/changes/number of people working on it, so it varies greatly!

As a set builder for my local theatre group all the way down on the east coast of Australia, id like to say well done to all at the company for everything you have shown. Ive discoved you a few days ago and have been watching heaps of clips. While we don't make the items you do, or the size, i fully appreciate the work, time, and effort into a task/job to get it right as i do the same thing. Thumbs up!

The polystyrene is stuck together using a Poly Urethane expanding foam. (The foil is already an adhesive sticky back foil so sticks on its own).
The foam is a medium or standard density styrofoam/polystyrene

3D printing is much more efficiant accurate and affordable. but yours is nice too.
@@quantumquestions5849depends what you mean by efficient. How is a CNC cutting machine going to create this from literally a 2d image on an album cover?....
3d CNC cutting requires a 3D file by which to program the machine with. Which you would need to pay to have created in the first place. Which also takes time, and costs money to hire someone with the expertise to do so. Aden literally carved this from looking at a single 2d image.
If you approach a 3D CNC cutting company, the machines could already be in use, and they may not be able to achieve this straight away. They may also not be able to make amendments easily, after the job is already carved. Working by hand allows for all of the above.

Belongs above a large door or hallway wall. Without the tralala that sits around it. Unless the possible arms rise from the gray medieval natural stones. Hallway decoration is just one example. I see a lot of possibilities in this :) Nice work
Excellent! Had I done my art all over again in these times, I would LOVE to be a carver for sets! However, been doing sets for 34 years for a nature centre, and I love the opportunity to carve something for us:) Budget-wise, of course:) Cheers to great work!! What tool are u using to make it smooth? Styrofoam is not easy to work with. I have tried pink insulation board and tend to like that, but should try this material too.:)
Hey Vicki, thanks for the comment. We use a standard bead polystyrene (you can get a high density bead polystyrene for higher detail, but for the scale we work on, this generally works out just fine). We then use sand paper to smoothen the surface after we've finished. In this instance, we only provided the polystyrene master pattern, and the client then carried out the rest of the work with glass fibre etc. Definitely worth trying out a larger block (we get ours from polystyrene supply companies, that usually then sell to insulation companies etc).

Where do you get those big blocks of EPS foam! This is such a mystery. I've seen it in a few other videos. There has to be a cheaper way than paying $20 a slab at home depot. Please help!

Hot wires. Nail Brushes. Wire Brushes. Sand Papers. Stone Mason Rifflers

If you are asked to do 10 that look exactly the same, would you guys sculpt them by hand or would you use computers and machines?
We would create a mould and replicate in glass fibre casts :) as we do with many other projects on our channel

The client did that part of the project herself, and sent us the finished photographs.
