I’ve always felt that the use of minor and “schrunchy” cords in this was a beautiful representation of how falling in love can be both beautiful and unsettling at the same time
PTX and their bell tones! They do it in so many of their arrangements. One of my favorite and most unique examples is in their mashup of New Rules/Are You That Somebody. I always smile like an idiot, every damn time I hear it. Supertonix indeed! I am always so happy to see one of your reactions pop up! Great commentary, thank you!
I'm holding my breath until you react to my favorite PTX song, Can't Hold Us.🤣It's not just fun, but it has so much going on and I would love to hear you break it down.
I believe this was the last song they recorded before Avi left the group. His departure had already been announced, and when they rotated to him at the beginning and he came in on “Shall I stay…” it brought a tear to my eye. BTW… I’ve quit listening to pretty much all other reviewers. Your ear for hearing the details and explaining them so simply is stunning. Look forward to all of your reactions ❤!
As soon as I heard you mention Imogen Heap, I checked to see if you'd reacted yet to PTX's cover of her song "Aha!", and you haven't. While there is an official very early music video of it, don't react to that. React instead to the one recorded live at the Star Vista in Singapore, from their 2015 tour. It's an epic performance that begins with the lead-in that Avi brought to it - a piece he'd performed with his chamber choir back in college - Ave Verum Corpus. My understanding is that they stopped using it after Avi left. Multiple Mitch slaps in that performance.
As great as that live performance is, it's not the best for someone who does an analysis based on the musical parts and arrangements. The sound quality of the cell phone video isn't great and it really only showcases Mitch and Avi. Kirstie, Scott and Kevin have some parts that need to be heard to fully appreciate that arrangement. If he did the official video followed by the live performance then it would make more sense to him. Also, there are actually better live performances from that same tour with good sound quality. It's just that Mitch didn't go full on beast mode in those so nobody talks about those live versions.
@PtxXtp I agree that listening to the official video followed by Star Vista would lead to a fascinating reaction! To me, it is almost like listening to two different songs. As to other, better recordings from the tour--nothing beats Mitch in full-on beast mode!! I've tried so hard to find another live performance of Aha! to love, but I keep coming back to this one. For me, there just is no comparison.

It reminds you of bells because they're singing bell tones. When they released this album kevin went live and was breaking down the song's and he excitdly talked about loving the part where he and Kirstin sang the bell tones. It's become kind of a ptx staple and once you're aware they do them often they're pretty easy to pick out.
@@SirHairless you made me question if it was a real term or just something that they say so I looked it up. Listening to and going to a capella shows in college was part of how my husband and I got together. We chose this PTX cover for our first dance at our wedding. Love it so much ❤
You mentioned in one of your other reactions that your favorite group was The Beach Boys. PTX performed Heroes and Villains in front of The Beach Boys at a tribute for them. It was amazing. I would include a link, but I understand the TH-cam gods frown upon that. Love your reactions.
Much like all of The Arts, part of the joy is in realizing different interpretations = different ways to enjoy the same/similar pieces. I love that about music. Part of PTXs success is that they, themselves are music fans. They always honor the OG but add their own iconic/signature bits in their arrangements. eg: bell tones, Mitch slaps, crunchy chords, vocal percussion, etc. As a former choir nerd, thru and beyond college, these are the kinds of arrangements you beg your conductor to rehearse. If you’ve never heard/performed the Gretchaninov, holy radiant light-8 part harmony-we loved it. Small groups of us rehearsed it together in random places. Fond memories.

This song has great meaning for my husband and I (40 years together) and then to hear Mitch, one of my favorite singers ever, take the lead was ethereal to me. There are many great versions, but this one touches me differently. Thanks for your reaction as always!! 🩷
When you mentioned the "scrunch" reminded you of Imogen Heap, my ears perked up. I don't know for sure, but I believe PTX is quite the fan of Imogen Heap. After all, they did a cover of Aha! early in their career. So maybe they've used Imogen Heap as a big inspiration in their music over the years. You'll certainly want to check out their Aha! cover. I'm sure you'll enjoy that one. There is their official music video. There's also the live version of Aha!, Singapore, The Star Vista version. A little different than the original video where Mitch is, well, Mitch. Amazing even being recorded on someone's cell phone back then.
As someone who was in band and choir, pieces with dissonance were my favorite to play and sing. You get the tension of the scrunchy chords, then the sweet resolution.
IMO, no other group, can build up a song, like Pentatonix They are masters at pulling on our emotions!!! 💗💗💗 I really enjoy your breakdowns, & appreciate how much you know about music & voices 😊
I live in wonder at your ability to pick out their individual voices. I heard the droning aspect much more clearly when you demonstrated with the piano, but I never would have heard it on my own with their voices. And I am delighted to learn that the technique I really like (and can pick out) has a name - polyphony. (Yes, spell check weighed in on that one.) As always, thanks so much for continuing to explore Pentatonix with us! Peace …
Another great analysis! Most reactors have no idea what to do with this one. It's so satisfying the way you immerse yourself in every note, and give words to the feels those notes evoke. You and PTX are a perfect combo. 💖
Love this one by Pentatoni! Mitch’s lead just made me so happy!! he has a gorgeous voice. And I personally love scrunchy harmonies. Love your reactions!❤
There aren't many songs sung by Pentatonix that can be sung better by anyone else, and in many cases that includes the people who made them famous. However, as good as this one is, I still find that the version done by Haley Reinhart and Casey Abrams is better. Not because of the complexity of the production but because of the simplicity and depth of feeling it displays. In my view the song represents a personal plea from someone in love to the individual that he/she is in love with. It feels more real when sung by a single voice who can emote that love. This Pentatonix version is masterfully done and I listen to it often but it doesn't touch my heart the way Haley's does.
Mitch is a huge fan of Imogen heap. They've actually covered two of her songs. Aha and Just For Now. Clears throat -both from the Avi era. Aha is a long time fan favorite and they still perform it to this day even though they first did it way back in 2013. Just for now is from a christmas album but it certainly doesnt sound like it so it can be done anytime.
Like all of their songs that they do without any beatboxing or other additional sound, this arrangement came across as simply perfect. Love it so much.
I have been eagerly awaiting this one! I was making dinner, perusing my phone and saw that this was here and immediately stopped everything to listen! I never cared for Elvis so when I first saw they did this, I wasn't going to listen to it. Then I did and now, this is the only version I will ever listen to regularly again! Pentatonix changed my mind! I agree will you. All the 'scrunchy' chords are IT! But those don't make it in the least stressful or unsettling. It's so smooth and relaxing. I am so pleased you decided to listen on the backs of the others. I do love VoicePlay's version, it's SO different, but this is by far my favorite. The way you are able to suss out the notes I never even knew were there! So interesting! Your "ear" is impeccable! Thank you so much for making my day!
Haha thanks! I would normally be against people receiving a delayed dinner, but in the name of PTX I think it's fair That's the beauty of arrangements - they can completely transform a song. Every arrangement is worth listening to at least once!
This is my favorite version of this song. Thank you for a wonderfully, educational reaction. I learned alot about this piece. The part near the end where you hear Mitch up high and Avi down low still gives me goosebumps.
I have always loved their version of this song. I enjoy how much PTX loves to use the vast difference between Mitch and Avi (or now Matt) to create beautiful moments in their songs. Thank you for another great analysis from one scrunchie chord lover to another.
It does let you take a deep breath and just sink into the song and singing....I also had a stressful day and will use some Pentatonix to change my mindset fairly quickly usually. Love how you break down the music. It actually something I can follow even with not being very musical.
I had that CD in my vehicle when it surprisingly erupted in fire at my feet. Needed a very slight door opening to slip out closing the door to not give oxygen to the flames. Shows precisely how music takes you places. Clearly the CD wasn’t saved as I had no time. Music is such a beautiful gift in life.
As you mentioned Imogen Heap, you coul’d be interested in their cover of her song Aha. I recommand the official video for an analysis. The live version is quite epic but the sound is a bit messy. Ps: Even if I don’t understand everything, I love your videos 😊
Mitch looks like he stepped out of a Gainsborough painting, fitting a look for his voice in this song. :) I truly love PTX take on this song, they sing with such quiet confidence, serenity, evoking feelings (for me) of tranquility, calm, and well, quite simply, happiness. I felt the same way when I first heard their rendition of The First Noel, which I thought was quite near perfection, and I don't want to put such a burden on any artist.. I'm drawn more to the perfectly-imperfect, especially if it is 'live'. I'm grateful for any performer who put themselves out there for our enjoyment. I also heard the faint chime sound with Kirstie and PTX-in-round allows me to focus on their individual voices /parts and yes, I do have a soft spot for Mitch-he knows how to tap into those emotional notes and nuances, but so does Scott. Thank you for covering this song Sir, and I hope your stress-filled day eases into a peaceful star-filled night. Whenever I need to get out of my 'head' I listen to either flamenco guitar or Erik Satie piano.
Thanks for the comment, as always! I wasn't going to write a response as your comment is lovely and doesn't require one at all, but I thought I simply have to as I'm listening to Satie right as a read this Spooky
Thank you for your detailed analysis. Confession: I’m addicted to VoicePlay and Geoff Castellucci (along with Tim Foust, Peter Hollens, and Tomi P). Can you tell I love a cappella singers? But I also love Corvyx and Dan Vasc and Baroque music. The only common thread is complex interwoven musical threads. Pentatonix fell off my listen list when Avi Kaplan left (I follow him now - and am much happier). Today, you made me re-evaluate dropping Pentatonix.
Without Avi, some of the dynamics changed, yes... but they're only different, not better or worse. Matt contributes a great deal to their cohesion as a group. His vocals are obviously not as low as Avi's but they have their own "flavor", if you will. Rich and warm, happier...and a bit more in synch with Kevin. Those two make a great team and really play off each other. Try New Rules/I Am that Somebody to get a look at how well those two work together. Also...Kevin's Fifth on stage performance... Matt gets to be a part of it.
I agree Dorothy, after Avi left i couldn’t bring myself to continue watching PTX. Matt is unbelievably talented and a perfect part of their group now, but theres just something about Avi’s voice that i fell in love with.
I always find these comments about no longer following PTX after Avi left so very interesting. I’ve never had the guts to ask until now so why? I’ve followed all of the top a cappella groups for 15+ years. I can’t imagine no longer doing so because one member leaves. There’d be none left 😂. Matt is a wonderful fit for PTX and their style, in my opinion. Especially as he’s aged. I hope you do rethink dropping Pentatonix because they’re equally as fantastic as the rest. All unique in their own ways which is what I absolutely love! Have a blessed day. 🫶🏼
@@carriekovach797 i mean i did say Matt is perfect for the group and very talented lol, so it has nothing to do with him. I just found that when Avi left, i no longer felt the joy i did when he was there. I started following PTX in 2013, and i was instantly drawn to Avi. PTX from 2013- early 2015 was my favorite version of them. I had the honor of meeting Avi in 2014 and he was the sweetest human being. Overall though; i think i just enjoyed the classically trained voice that he brought to the group. To each their own!
@@Dr.Giudicessi thank you for answering. I truly meant zero disrespect. It’s been something I’ve wanted to ask people for a long time because I still see it on almost every PTX video 7 years later and it baffles me. Avi is fantastic and quite honestly, I think it’s obvious why he left because his style of music couldn’t be more different than Pentatonix so I’m truly happy for him. Definitely to each their own and that’s the beauty of music.
Ugh I love this one so much. Just beautiful all around but Mitch and Avi do it for me 🥰. Can’t Sleep Love (an original) is a fun one. I love Mitch’s part, and one of my favorite Avi bass line features. I know you did a few Sing Off ones - if you ever go back to do others I suggest Dogs Days are Over and Born to be Wild 😊
@maryhampton868 hey, off topic a bit, but have you seen this week’s poll for PTX future r/a options to prioritize? Super analysis of a great cover by PTX. This was a song my sorority sang in college when sisters got Pinned or Engaged so a special song to me. Can’t Hold Us or Aha, Singapore Star Vista are both excellent choices.
Another insightful and informative reaction, my friend. And interestingly, many other reactors refer to those as "bell tones", too, so you're in good company. What will you do when you get to the post-Avi reactions, I wonder? I'm looking forward to finding out. Thanks again.
I find this so stranger! I thought I was speaking nonsense talking about bells 😅 So clearly many others feel the same! I guess we'll find out when I get there Thanks for the support!
Yes! I'm so glad you did this one. I was one of the viewers that suggested this haha. I find the harmonies and their choices of chords to be mesmerizing. Being an Avi fan, his low notes give me goosebumps. Thanks for doing this one. I think this is a showcase song for them.
Another great reaction. I always love listening to you breaking down the songs musically. I've learned so much. Like you, I love the scrunchy parts. And I always look forward to your 'Mitch Slap' smiles. 😊
Always appreciate the immense attention to detail you have in your reactions! This is one of my favorite PTX covers - no beatboxing, just lovely 5 part harmony throughout. The little echoes that Kevin and Kirstie do towards the end of the song really make this song for me. I always get a chuckle out of this - watch Scott at the very end, in the 5 person lineup. Everyone has kept very still throughout the entire video, but Scott sings with his hands almost as much as his voice, and at the very end of the song, he can't help but use his hands to help him finish the song!
IIRC,, Kevin is the only member of the group who has "perfect pitch" - which makes sense, because that's invaluable to a stringed instrument artist. The rest of them have what Mitch described in an interview as "perfect relative pitch" - given a note, they can flawlessly harmonize with it, as needed for the arrangement. So it makes sense that Kevin would have those moving "crunchy" harmony notes.
Kevin seems to write and sing a lot of dissonant chords - I can't wait for you to react to their original "Water" which he wrote with Kirstie. Live - Popspring concert
Yay! Supertonix day! I've been waiting for this one. This is one of my favorites and I knew you'd love those "filthy" chords! Dissonance, I'm a big fan of it! Viola was my main instrument and as a violist, I played a lot of crunchy notes. I do have a comparison for you, so jot it down on your PTX spreadsheet for Christmas.... Compare their early (Avi years) Oh Holy Night to their newly released (Matt years) Oh Holy Night. I don't mean compare which is better, who is better, but compare their growth, style, arranging, etc. That would be something really special to hear your take. Stay well my friend and thank you once again.
The violas are of the strings world what altos are to the choral world - the bringers of dissonance! Yes, good idea about O Holy Night (it's my favourite carol, too 🎄)
I've been begging for a lullaby type album from PTX for yearssssssssss!!!!!! Scott wrote a song called Light in the Hallway as a lullaby for his nephew back when Avi was there & he wanted Avi to sing lead on it. It's absolutely ethereal & breathtaking. The things they are able to do always blow me away but often their more intimate or homophonic arrangements are the ones that have me salivating for a lullaby album. Maybe add some contemporary hyms or something to it as well. With their genius combined I just know it would be an album full of so many new creations for our ears to just melt to.
Another great reaction, and a great surprise to get a PTX reaction to make my day ( yet another snowy day in Newfoundland) Keep up the amazing job, Sir.
This was my moment of zen today - loved their version of the song and loved your reaction. I also noted the sound similarity to Imogen Heap’s Hide and Seek (a great song).
That was just fantastic! That is definitely an arrangement that could only be pulled off by a few groups. A couple of singers/groups that I would like to suggest; I would imagine that you have already received requests to review Eva Cassidy's version of Over the Rainbow. She makes some interesting choices such as going down the scale in places where the original version went up. I think that her version is more heart felt and emotional than the original. Eva, unfortunately became well known posthumously. It was only by blind luck that some of her live performances at Blues Alley were recorded for posterity. The other group is the Libera Boys Choir. They have, over the years, developed their own style which is sort of an ethereal sound which has become their trademark, and is actually referred to as the Libera sound. In one song, I Vow To The My Country, there is a brief period where they fall into standard chorus, which they do brilliantly, and it really puts their own style into stark relief. They are very skilled, and they perform in venues all over the world, usually to a full house. I would be very interested to hear your professional view on what it is that actually makes up their signature sound.
Check out this PTX reaction next th-cam.com/video/EFv3UB9c0mY/w-d-xo.html

This is hauntingly beautiful! Thank you for such an in depth explanation of the beauty that they created!
Great reaction. You are one of my favorite reactors because you speak my geek. Music theory. I appreciate you. 🩵
Wow great analysis. That "Supertonix" suggestion was hilarious. That kind of humor is right up my alley, Thanks.
Top 3 PTX song for me, for years and years! Thanks so much for another excellent reaction!
Thank you for covering this song
Sir, and I hope your stress-filled day eases into a peaceful star-filled night.
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING COVER!!other than the original to me PENTATONIX's version is 💯💯💯💯💯% For me😃
Supersonix-love it. Beautiful song; beautiful performance. It is amazing what you hear. Thanks for sharing
@maryhampton868 hey, off topic a bit, but have you seen this week’s poll for PTX future r/a options to prioritize? Lots of ptx fans here but I know not everyone is a channel member (yet).. only 2 of us have responded to Sir’s ptx poll.. check it out this week and let any other members who are into ptx know. Thanks Mary!
So great! Once again, PTX and you made my day better.❤
As always…….LOVE! ❤️
Really enjoyed listening to this with you.
Supertonix! Love it.
Очень нежная и трогательная версия песни.🥰 Качаешься в лодке на волнах, и мечтаешь. Голоса, конечно прекрасные!👍
I wish I had your ear for the notes. You always have an interesting take on the arrangement and musicality.
A beautiful version of this song.
My Heart With You is another one i think you'd really enjoy 😁
Super analysis of a great cover by PTX. This was a song my sorority sang in college when sisters got
Pinned or Engaged so a special song to me. Can’t Hold Us or Aha, Singapore Star Vista are both excellent choices.
Isn't this just absolutely beautiful?! ❤
Lovely reaction as usual!
TX for this. Agreed. So soothing and pure. What a sound to go to bed to. Appreciate you. Greetings from South Africa
Love how you explain what I love about what I hear. Thank you!
Instant Chills with this version! I'm ah really emotional today and I'm crying again from how beautiful this was
Good call on Imogen Heap. She was Mitch’s biggest musical influence in his youth.
Another fabulous reaction & analysis, I enjoy ur videos so much. Thank you 🩷
Thank you!
Love this one. I agree, it's relaxing and easy to listen to.
Yes! I'm so glad you did this one. I was one of the viewers that suggested this haha. I find the harmonies and their choices of chords to be mesmerizing. Being an Avi fan, his low notes give me goosebumps. Thanks for doing this one. I think this is a showcase song for them.
It has to be on purpose that this is so reminiscent of Imogen Heap's "Hide and Seek."
Thank again, for such a succinct reaction! Your reactions always make me so happy!
Another mesmerising reaction and analysis!💫 Thank you Sir H! 👏🙏
Thank you very much!
You are amazing deciphering these songs. Makes me understand their arrangements.
this entire album is amazing!
Thank you for the analysis! This is a favorite of mine.
Another great reaction. I always love listening to you breaking down the songs musically. I've learned so much. Like you, I love the scrunchy parts. And I always look forward to your 'Mitch Slap' smiles. 😊
I so enjoy your musical breakdowns as well as the joy on your face. 😊
I enjoyed your video very much. Thank you for the reaction and analysis for this awesome Pentatonix video.
Thank you!
Haha yes I actually recorded myself speaking about Scott's hands but it didn't make the final cut
Great analysis!
Thanks!
Supertonix indeed. 😊
Nice soothing session of 'learning & relaxing' with Sir Hairless, thank you!🙏
Kevin seems to write and sing a lot of dissonant chords - I can't wait for you to react to their original "Water" which he wrote with Kirstie. Live - Popspring concert
You blow my mind with your knowledge 🤯. Well done, sir.
Oh I love them so much! 5 wonderful singers making the song, the star. And again, what a great analysis. So glad you enjoyed it as well. 🤗
Pentatonix, Supertonix, Perfectonix. They all apply...
I loved the harmonies. PTX at their finest.
Ugh this song is so pretty. And Mitch….well Mitch ❤
Full body goosebumps every time I listen to this.❤️
That was just fantastic! That is definitely an arrangement that could only be pulled off by a few groups.
A couple of singers/groups that I would like to suggest;
I would imagine that you have already received requests to review Eva Cassidy's version of Over the Rainbow.
Thanks for the recommendations!
Funny you mention Libera; I know an ex-member 😄 The music world is really, REALLY small
Beautiful rendition of this song and interesting commentary per usual. Thank you! Supertonix, Perfectatonix,…so many synonyms 😊
Lovely, lyrical, and beautifully done…
If you watch The Prayer you’ll hear Mitch and Kirsie😊😊😊sing a duet
So cool
Thanks very much for the reaction. I enjoyed it ❤
4:16 love abut of good filth 😂😂😜
