This year I drove a truck that had the 45 ft trailer on it. As I was pulling through the unloading ramp, I was watching my trailer tires to make sure I stayed straight in the ramp, in the corner of my eye, I saw a hard hat passing in front of my truck and I slammed on my brakes. The other dock workers chewed that girl out about walking so close to the front of a moving truck. It sure scared all of us. Everyone always preaches safety but all it takes is one tired person to unthinkingly get hurt bad. Dean

Funny story about beets: Years ago I was driving through an, unbeknownst to me, area where sugar beets are grown. I kept seeing these large trucks hauling long open boxes of *river rocks*. Now what in tarnation are they doing with all those river rocks? Dredging a river channel perhaps (I was near the Snake River after all), or how about using them as a roadbed? So yes, I thought sugar beets were river rocks. New van owner subscriber here, and I’m very much enjoying your videos. Thanks for sharing all your beautiful locations.

I was a driver working for one of the farms in North Dakota for the Sugar Beet Harvest and we worked the 12 hour shifts also. When driving for a farm, you don’t need a Cdl, you just need to know how to drive a truck. The pay will depend on the farm that you work for. The farm that I work for provides housing for their temporary workers so the pay is probably slightly less than elsewhere but it was still 22 dollars an hour this year. And as I worked the compete harvest season, which was wheat, beans, potatoes, and sugar beets, I ended the season with almost $13,000 in my bank. Now there are farms that pay more but you have to set up your on living accommodations and pay out of pocket for therm. But I work for the same farm every year as I like the farmer and his family and all his full time workers. And this year I got to drive a half million dollar tractor pulling a chisel plow for a couple weeks, which was a new experience. Dean

I live near Sidney, and worked for a local farmer driving truck. It is long days with get it done as fast as you can attitude.
In my opinion that your under paid. The farmer and company are wealthy people and expect you to work as if you got millions to earn. Sidney Montana is the most expensive town in Montana, the groceries are about twice as any where.

We had 2 bars of Verizon right at the RV park. Ask for full hookups even if you don't need them for a better site at the park. Try to get day shift if you can, it usually makes more money and is better work. We just may see you there. 😎

You did not explain, how did you travel from the campground to the harvest site?
    Shuttle?
I would consider leaving my pet with nearby regional great friend/relative for the harvest. That's for me, not everyone, avoid the muddy paws, exercise the pal after 12 hours on my feet.
Are you allowed to put up temporary awnings/pop up with chair/table. Allowing disrobing/ leaving muddy stuff outside of camper?
I can/would apply for the truck driver positions.
That mud!!! They should consider some type of portable military style steel landing mat/roadway. They do this every year. Not able to have main gravel/paved roadways? I'm not there, just questions.
Are you two considering working temporary for November/December Amazon or similar?
California SF bay area $18/hour, you two team delivery? Just gotta find a nearby campsite!!!???
Great information. Great work, and life, experience, and fast $$. Especially when young and able.
    Opportunity to meet life friends.
Have you explored other temporary harvest opportunities?

    • @oneadVANtureatatime
      @oneadVANtureatatime  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Clark. Yes, we did drive from the RV park to the factory yard every day. This was only about a one-mile drive with nearly no traffic. I don't see why you couldn't put up a temp awning because we did see people put up tents. Keeping muddy clothes and boots outside is no problem.
We have considered Amazon but the time frame is too long for us and would affect our TH-cam content more than we are willing to. We have done other short-term jobs such as construction work and Van build stuff. We love the idea of trying other harvest jobs and would be open to try something new.
I wanted to add that we don't have much information on the driving jobs other than the farmers were short-handed this year. We don't know who pays them or where they stay at night. These are great questions for us to find out next year right from the drivers themselves.
I hope we were able to answer some of your questions.
