🔫 Coil gun - Bullet Speed - Energy Speed - Calculation

  • Hello friends!
    In this video I'll show how you can measure the speed and energy of a bullet fired from a coil-gun.
    I compiled the coilgun model according to the attached circuit.
    The main parts of an electromagnetic gun are a storage capacitor, a coil and a projectile.
    When the capacitor is discharged to the coil, a magnetic field arises that accelerates the projectile.
    To measure the speed and energy of the bullet, I made several measurements that I entered into the calculator.
    That's how I measured the distance from the coil to the target.
    The core of the bullet I made of mild steel and attached to it the tip and stabilizer.
    I weighed the bullet on the scale.
    To measure the flight time of the bullet, I connected two sensors to the Audacity free program.
    I put the inductive sensor near to the Gauss Gan coil, and the piezoelectric sensor attached to the target.
    As a result, I got the value of the speed and energy of the bullet, as well as the efficiency of the gun.
    Download Portable Calculator: oldoctober.com/pics/diy2/coilg...
    Calculation of the coilgun parameters
    \\Projectile speed (m/s)
    L=3
    t =0,102
    V=L/t ≈ 29,4
    \\
    \\
    \\Kinetic energy of the bullet (J)
    m=0,0237
    T=m*V^2/2 ≈ 10,3
    \\
    \\
    \\ The energy of the capacitor (J)
    C=0,018
    U=170
    E=C*U^2/2 = 260,100
    \\
    \\
    \\Efficiency (%)
    h=T*100/E ≈ 3,9
    I wishing you successful projects and creative inspiration!

    Great job on the coil gun.
    When I was in College, there was a someone who made a magnetic gun with 6 coils. As the projectile passed through one coil, a light sensor detected the projectile has left the coil and would energize the next and so on. Serious projectile speed

    While this is neat and fun, remember that your total force is divided by the mass of the projectile squared, and also remember that you should have your field as close to the projectile as possible, so perhaps try a smaller projectile, (BB?) and/or smaller barrel. Aside from this, excellent job.

  • @wojciechmikoajczyk789
    @wojciechmikoajczyk789 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    v=2*L/t - the length of the barrel inside coil , t- time of passing through coil, the second method of of calculation. Presented method is good , the projectile moves in uniform motion after leaving the barrel and the distance from coil is much greater than length of coil . Very good idea with Audacity implementing. In professional solutions capacitor voltage reaches several kV.

  • @davidn4125

    Pretty cool. It's interesting to note that by conservation of energy the amount of kinetic energy attained by the projectile is slightly less than the kinetic energy of the hammer.

    You could also confirm your velocity measurement by calculation from the difference in height from the gun to where the projectile strikes, knowing how far the gun is from the target. It is the ballistics problem from elementary mechanics (physics.)

  • @isettech

    I did a variant with a T shirt cannon to find velocity. Air was the propellant, so a small magnet was placed inside the shirt, and 2 coils where placed along the barrel, 1 foot apart and connected in series. This was fed to audacity. The magnet crossing the center of the coils resulted in a pair of S curves. Time from the zero crossings was the travel time between coils. We were running just over 500 FPS.

    It is desirable to lower the weight of the bullet (aperture in bullet) to 8-10 grams in order to increase speed . Increasing the voltage has significant influence on energy in bullet according to formula: Energy= U*U*C/2

    • @gangleweed
      @gangleweed 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No.....the energy is contained in the mass of the bullet.....the heavier the bullet and the faster it goes the more hitting force it exerts on the target and the longer distance it travels.........if it was made out of paper or aluminium it wouldn't go vey far.

    So.........if you wrapped a coil around a bicycle pump you could get a pump gun with a barrel on the end of the pump..........the piston would try to go all the way into the pump barrel with just a magnetic pulse and so compress the air as it goes in, no need to stop it at the end......the compressed air would fire the bullet down the barrel on the end.

    Seems like it would be a lot easier just to use a ballistic chronograph to get the projectile velocity, then calculate the kinetic energy based on the projectile's weight. Of course, given the very low velocity of your coilgun, you could probably get by with using an airsoft chrono rather than one intended for use with actual firearms, as the low velocity of your gun probably wouldn't register on one meant for real guns.
    But of course, this way does seem more interesting, and it definitely allows you to learn more about physics than taking a shortcut witha chrono.

    Dalam video diatas dapat saya pahami bahwasannya bagian utama dari senjata elektromagnetik adalah kapasitor penyimpanan, koil dan proyektil. Ketika kapasitor dilepaskan ke koil, medan magnet muncul yg mempercepat proyektil. Untuk mengukur kecepatan dan energi peluru, melakukan beberapa pengukuran yg dimasukkan ke dalam kalkulator. Kemudian, mengukur jarakdari koil ke target. Inti dari peluru yg terbuat dari baja ringan dan melekat padanya ujung dan stabilisator. Untuk mengukur waktu penerbangan peluru, menghubungkan dua sensor ke program Audacity. Lalu meletakkan sensor induktif di dekat koil Gauss Gan dan sensor piezoelektrik yg terpasang pada target. Hasilnya. mendapatkan nilai kecepatan dan energi peluru, serta efisiensi dari pistol. Terimakasih, videonya bermanfaat.

    Does the coil's magnetism continue to pull on the projectile, even after it starts moving away from the coil, acting like a brake. It seems like one needs a very fast discharge current spike that drops off fast to prevent a long magnetic pulse width.
