After reviewing the Sailor 1911L, I agree with many of the comments here that the 823 really is an amazing pen. I guess I needed something to contrast it against but now I am completely sold and in love with the 823 as my next purchase! Thanks all for you feedback!
there are 3 823's in our house, and two are mine... I love them both, a Smoke and Amber... such a classy aesthetic... cleaning really is not a problem... because the pen can be fully disassembled (as there are many TH-cam views demonstrating this). Thusly, I have had no problem with cleaning. When compared alongside my MB 146 (18kt ef) or any of my Sailors (all with 21kt's), I set the pleasure of long writing sessions with my 823's above any of these (excepting, of course, my KoP). I was fortunate to find a barely /gently used Amber (medium nib) on Ebay, everything included except the bottle of ink (and the seller's original purchasing receipt/bill of sale, evincing the considerable loss incurred compared to the agreed price at which we arrived in its resaliing). A bargain (steal). Anyway... either way, even if bought at the seller's original listing price, the 823 is an incredible buy and a wonder for any collection.
I would like to take the route you have, perhaps getting a pre loved one. The more I wrote the more I liked it. I just need to try the others to have something to compare it to. The KOP is really something, a 1911L is more likely for me to try out. Thanks for your comment!
I agree with you Pilot nibs has one of the best quality control, very consistent. 823 has a hard smooth nib, and no pencil feedback like Sailor nibs, which is more about personal preference. Although the vac filling has a large ink capacity, it is a pain to clean, especially for people who have a large ink collection and enjoy switching inks... for that reason I think Pilot 743 with C/C filling is a better choice for maintaining and cleaning, changing ink, using same size 15 pilot nib, and arguably much more nib size choices.
I like a pen with girth and the cigar shape is attractive. The amber colour caught my eye straightaway. I use the Sheaffer PFM which is a snorkel filler and it, too, is close to impossible to clean when changing ink colours. My solution was to buy other PFMs and use a different colour in each pen. Otherwise, if I change the ink colour, I rinse out the sack and then just watch - and wait - for the old colour to mix in the nib with the new colour, run out and then the new colour starts. As for the price of the pen, I can’t comment since I don’t know what it is. Only you can assess its value by how well it works in your hand. Good luck with your search for other similar pens.
A truly beautiful review. Soon I'll take it too but I'm undecided between M and F. I'm afraid that the m is too thick and that the f with too much feedback
One of my favorite pens; have it in both fine and medium nib versions. It can be easily disassembled for cleaning ... plenty of TH-cam videos demonstrating "how to".
Out of the 823, 1911L and 3776, I would give the nod to the 1911L. The 743 is a good option if you don't want the hassle of using the vacuum filler and the cleaning issues. This is from the standpoint of having multiple #15 Pilot nibs and a few Sailor different 1911L nibs. I only have one 3776 (in Fine), though.
@@SorrowisKnowledge yes, if I had it to do over, I’d get the 723 to have the cartridge/converter system. Or even the $100 less 742 model with a #10 nib, which is a nice size nib. I don’t have the Sailor 1911 but I do have the 823 and the 742, and the 3776 in fine, med, and broad, and the Platinum President in M. The 3776 is nice in medium and broad, and so affordable, however I would not recommend the fine nib, too fine and scratchy for me….but the Platinum President is my favorite, with an 18k nib. Not sure if it’s my particular pen, or if they are all like this, but mine has a slightly squared nib, giving it nice line variation. The pen also has a nice feeling to it, like the 823. More luxurious. I got mine on sale, I think at Cultpens, for a little under $200, but I think the typical price is closer to $300.
My custom 74 FM and 823 F are silky smooth, my 1911L F writes beautifully and you have more control over the lines but it has a fair amount of feedback, so it’s not what a typical person I think expects when they try it. My 3776 M is my favorite all-arounder, I feel like it fits in between smooth Pilot, and feedback-ish Sailor, it’s smooth enough but still has a bit of feedback allowing for neater writing IMO. I am sending my 1911L to a nibsmith soon for a tuning so I’m hoping it comes back feeling a little smoother.
Nice video, particularly like your voiceover and editing! Regarding the other Japanese cigar shaped pens, the sailor 1911L (the 21K nib version) is pretty good imo, slightly more feedback for a more pencil-like feel that I really enjoyed. The Platinum 3776 on the other hand is not my favourite, to me the nib feels very bland/soulless compared to the sailor or pilot equivalent.
I favour the Sailor, even though I haven't used one. I've wanted a 1911 since I saw the tangerine one. The large would be ideal as the KOP is a bit pricey

Nice video. Adding to that, you've a very pleasant, unassuming, voice and tone. And always nice to watch a video that ends with a good quote.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it 😊

Good review, nice camera angles and appropriate background music. Subscribed !

I will take a look at the 743, could be a good alternative! Thanks
Excellent video. Thanks.

Multiple pens would be the best answer, the pen is around $350-400 Aud depending on seller. I'll keep looking and see what I like best!

Thanks, I'll have a look, if that's an easy solution, then it will make life easier. It's a great pen!
I would avoid disassembling it. I have one and cracked the barrel putting it back together. I was careful but not careful enough.
Wonderful review. It is a shame the pen is so difficult to clean. Liked & subscribed. 👍

I'll probably try a Sailor 1911L next, that's been the one I've wanted the most.

Enjoyed this video
Couldn't agree more

Also, if you like the softness/bounciness of this nib, the sailor and platinum ones will be stiffer and harder in comparison

A great quotation. Really made me stop and think.
