    Amazon links to the stuff used in this video:
    Samsung SSD 980 1TB geni.us/SamsungSSD980
    Sabrent USB C to NVME SSD enclosure geni.us/6VW8
    iPhone 15 Pro Max geni.us/iPhone15-ProMax
    SODI magnetic phone stand geni.us/Magnetic-Phone-Stand
    The best and fastest external USB-C SSD for the iPhone 15 that I have managed to put together so far. This is a combination of the Sabrent USB-C to NVME 10Gb/s enclosure and the Samsung SSD 980 NVME Gen3 M.2 SSD.
    I'm saying best based on price to performance, because it is. And I'm saying fastest because these speeds are the fastest I've seen so far and are on the edge of what the iPhone 15 Pro Max can achieve.
    Here's the 15 Pro max T7 video th-cam.com/video/CkRUqqA_4V4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=1AJ-gnhsTa2yDSv2
    In the video I also show you how to build the SSD. How to format the SSD in a Mac. And show the SSD speed tests.
    As you can see in the tests the iPhone 15 Pro Max reaches over 900MB/s in both read and write with this SSD. Making it about as fast as you will get for any iPhone 15.
    This is an excellent external USB-C SSD storage drive option for your iPhone 15.
    As for my measurements of file size and data speed/bandwidth:
    1GB = 1000MBs.
    Before 1998 a Gigabyte was 1024 Megabytes. This is base 2 binary. However, after 1998 this changed so that a Gigabyte (GB) was 1000 Megabytes (MB). This is base 10 decimal, which is used to measure all SSDs and is how Apple and Samsung measure their internal storage and SSDs.
    After 1998 the base 2 binary Gigabyte was changed to Gibibyte (GiB) and the base 2 Megabyte was changed to Mebibyte (MiB).

    If your SSD demands more than 4.5 Watts you are going have trouble if you record proress videos or long videos directly to the SDD, they will be choppy. This might happen even if you don't record long videos.
    Remember that when you chose your SSD. There are also nvme closure than can be supplied by powerbanks, one can also choose this kind.

    Ahh! David, So refreshing to find someone who explains thing how I can understand. I have the base 15 but the speed will be more than enough for me.
    I mentioned in another post how frustrated I got with a Sandisk working on my wifes ipad but not my phone. Will this drive work on the base iphone 15?
    Thank you again.

    • @DavidHarry
      @DavidHarry  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, Richard. I’m glad that these videos have been helpful 👍 Now, as far as this drive working with the iPhone 15, I can’t 100% say yes. I did have an iPhone 15 but I can’t remember if I tested this drive with it. However, it should work because the same limitations that affect the Pro Max are the same for the standard 15. As in, the power delivery over their USB ports, they both have the same current/power limitation. The reason why this one works is because the actual SSD is Gen 3 and Gen 3 SSD, mostly, use less power and current compared to Gen 4 SSDs. Plus, the enclosure being used is also drawing a low current. So the combination of the current draw from the SSD and the enclosure, stay below the maximum limit that the Pro Max is capable of supplying. Which as I’ve just said, should be the same as the standard 15. To be honest, if speed isn’t an issue for you then a USB-C flash drive (thumb stick) may be all you need and they should definitely work as they draw a lot less current/power compared to an SSD. Plus, they are more convenient, no trailing cables and they are generally a lot smaller. Just make sure to get a standard USB-C flash drive and not one of the super fast ones, as those ones essentially use an SSD inside of the them. Saying that, the advantage of a fast SSD, even if speed at the iPhone is not an issue, is that when you connect it a computer you can then transfer your files to the computer very quickly. Again though, if speed and time aren’t an issue when transferring, if your are using a computer. Then a USB C flash drive may still be a good solution. Just remember to format whatever drive you are using to EX-FAT, if you plan on using the drive with anything other than a Mac computer, such as a Windows computer. Or if you are using Mac computers, EX-FAT is also fine but APFS is probably better as it has file system and security benefits that EX-FAT does not. Sorry I can’t give you an absolute for the compatibility between this SSD and the standard 15. Cheers, Dave.

      @@DavidHarry Thanks David. My main use is for photos and videos when I'm out and about which add up very quickly. I don't want to use any cloud services for that.
      From what you are saying I think a flash driver, or two may be a more practical solution.

    Seem like RT9210B with low power consuming SSD will work well with iPhone15 PM, however I have managed to combine jms583 with Solidigm P44 Pro 2 TB together and work well with my iPhone 15 PM, the import and export speed are both ~900MB/s
    For the drive like P4801X m.2 375 GB, such drive required high power consumption, the drive not work with any SSD enclosures on my hand when connected to iPhone 15 PM
    In addition, all my SATA SSD work well with asm1153e adapter which is amazing, seem like SATA drives consumed less power but come with large form factor.

    First of all, thanks for your video. You’ve gained yourself a subscriber. But here it goes… This may have an obvious answer but I’m not very techy so I’ll ask the dumb question anyway. Lol. If I build this drive and format it as stated in your video, will I be able to use and open the files (such as documents, photos, videos) interchangeably between my iphone 15 pro max, macbook pro, and my windows computer?

    • @DavidHarry
      @DavidHarry  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, Eleanor. If you format the drive to ExFAT. Then yes, you will be able to use it with a Mac, iPhone and Windows computers and as long as the files and documents are supported by whatever device you connect the drive, they will be able to be opened, saved and copied etc. Cheers, Dave,

    Enjoy your very detailed videos, David. I managed to get a new Acasis TBU405 with 4tb Crucial P3 Gen 3 3500mb/s to work with the iPhone 15 pro max. Must be something different about new ones from Acasis, as my old one does not work. Thought you would find it interesting. Best Wishes.

    • @DavidHarry
      @DavidHarry  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi. That’s very interesting, thanks. Yes, it looks like ACASIS may have changed the design and power draw of the enclosure.
      It may even be the case that other Gen 3 SSDs may now work with it, as long as the SSD is not pulling too much power. I’ve had a few P3 SSDs and they always seemed to run cooler than other SSDs. Which would usually indicate lower power draw. While the P3 isn’t the fastest SSD for internal PC use. Because of its lower power draw, it does make for a great option for an enclosure. Especially as its higher capacities are cheaper than anything else I’ve managed to find (using named brands).
      I’ve pasted a response to another comment in a different video below, about similar issues, you may find that interesting.
      Again, thanks for your comment 👍
      Cheers,
      Dave.
      That’s interesting, thanks. Yes, the limiting factor would appear to be the overall power draw. Using something like a lower capacity Gen 3 SSD, such as a P3, may be just about OK with the combined power usage of the enclosure.
      However, certain larger capacity Gen 3 SSDs with a slightly higher power draw, probably tips it over the edge for total combined power draw with the power draw from the enclosure being included.
      In my experience, no Gen 4 SSDs have worked with any of my enclosures. There maybe some combinations of Gen 4 and an enclosures that don’t exceed the maximum power draw, but I’ve not found any.
      Yes, the iPad Pro and most Macs will be fine. These are using Thunderbolt ports, which are also USB compatible. These ports are capable of supplying around 15w of power.
      Thank you for your comment 👍
      Cheers,
      Dave.

      @DavidHarry  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Hi. Thank you 👍 It looks like this particular SSD is 1TB at its maximum. If you go for a 4TB SSD be careful. In previous videos of mine I have shown that the iPhone can not see Gen4 NVMe SSDs no matter what type of enclosure it is in. It would seem like a power delivery issue with all the iPhone 15s. If you use a powered hub then you should be OK using Gen4 NVMe SSDs inside a USB-C and most Thunderbolt/USB enclosures. But for a portable bus powered SSD, I would totally avoid using Gen4 NVMe for the SSD and stick with a Gen3 NVMe SSD. Cheers, Dave.

    are those speeds restricted to a 1TB, what if u were to use a 2TB ssd ??

      @DavidHarry  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, Steve. The speeds won't change even if the SSD is faster, the iPhone is already at its bandwidth limit. I have drives that can do almost 3000MBs on Thunderbolt4/USB4 but they aren't faster than this drive. Cheers, Dave.

      @@SteveAggasild Hi, Steve. Seriously, this drive is awesome. I have a 4TB drive that cost about $600 and while it is better than this drive if used on a Mac PC or Windows PC. When used on the iPhone this much cheaper drive is faster. Honestly, take a look around TH-cam and I can guarantee you that no one is showing a drive with the iPhone that’s even close as far as speeds are concerned. BTW, don’t bother taking advice from any TH-camrs who just do synthetic speeds tests to “prove” a point, there’s a whole bunch of things wrong with that, which is something that I’ll do a video about soon. The only tests for proper real-world usage are when you use massive files or folders and time their transfers. As many drives fall off massively after only even a few gigabytes, depending on the type of cache or buffering systems they use. Cheers, Dave.

    Can you make a same video on s23ultra please because i want to check whether my phone is supported 900mbps speed or not ...

    • @JimEdds
      @JimEdds 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I believe the S23 ultra is only usb-c 3.0 speed. so 5Gbps not 10Gbps like iPhone 15 pro/max

    • @DavidHarry
      @DavidHarry  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, Jim. That's absolutely correct. Furthermore, the iPhone's storage is way faster as well, so uses more of the available bandwidth from the USB-C port. Cheers, Dave.

    The Samsung 980 does not have a 2TB model. I am interested in the 990 pro with max power consumption of 5.5W, as it does offer a 2TB option. Will it be compatible with my setup? Alternatively, can you recommend a 2TB alternative with similar performance?

    Im using the 10gb/s short usb-c that you recommended on my iPhone 15 pro max, unfortunately some videos go through and when I see them on the external drive they have like broken images and lag, not all of them. The external drive is not full, formatted to APFS before use. Share your knowledge on what I can do to fix it🙏🏼

      I have 2 drives: both are SanDisk, I don’t have a lot of knowledge but one of the drives is a gen 2 and the other one is gen 2x2 (which I don’t understand well). I used 4 cables, 1 is the 10gb/s you recommended with the t7 Samsung, the other one is the iPhone 15 pro usb c cable (which I think is a 10gb/s and the other 2 are the ones the drives brought (they don’t have a lot of information.
