Everyone is praising Brad Pitt in this film - but Aidan Quinn stole the show for me. He was great. Sadly he has been mostly forgotten about in film these days. But between Legends of the Fall and Michael Collins - he is one of the greats.
I first saw him in An Early Frost--when it was really risky careerwise to play a gay man, especially one with AIDS. Good in everything he did, including the incredible Songcatcher.
Exactly. Aidan Quinn has been great in everything I've seen him in. He's good at playing these emotionally tortured, borderline villainous characters who you can sympathise with. Great actor.

I found it idiotic at the time, and still do now, that two Germans stopped, set up a machine gun, just too machine one guy caught in barbed wire, but dont shoot the guy running towards them with a weapon screaming like crazy. So ridiculously over dramatic.

They would have just shot him with a pistol or rifle, or just held the machine gun and fired. It doesn't make any sense at all that they would take the time to place it on its tripod, load, and then fire... for one enemy soldier.

Different people vote every time. Sometimes there are surprise wins when quality does win out. Sometimes, lots of quality films come out at once, and only one can win. Which has been happening forever. Taxi Driver and Rocky were nominated at the same time. Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump. Sometimes, the people voting just vote for whatever is popular or arbitrarily vote for a film for inexplicable reasons, though. Like how Saving Private Ryan didn't win best picture and lost to Shakespeare in Love of all films.

I think everyone who comes here was affected by this scene in a deep way. Inside all of us we were screaming with Tristan. He knew he couldn't save his beloved brother, he knew he couldn't make it, he knew his brother was about to die, his heart bled as he tried to alter time and space to save his brother but deep down inside he knew. That scream is what makes actors great, what a scene, this is why the cinema era was beautiful.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. The cast is Amazing. The movie was excellent. Brad Pitt was robbed of an Oscar. Brilliant performance by Brad . THIS scene breaks my heart and I cry every time.
Poor Samuel. Tragically naïve about the brutality of life which led to his life being cut way too short without experiencing the joy of consummating his marriage.
I know it's a movie and all, but... a few things bother me here. First off, the machine gunners have sidearms of their own. They wouldn't have needed the Maxim gun to shoot Samuel. Second, they wouldn't have wasted that many bullets on 1 man. And third, in doing so, he would have been dead instantly. No tearjerking last moments between him and Tristan after that many bullets at such close range.
Great scene and movie however Im not sure they'd put all three brothers together like that in war. Their love for each other and trying to protect the youngest brother because hes engaged could have messed up the battle plans for their regimen. Tristan had a tough gig trying to watch Samuels back in a dangerous war 24/7.
In reality, a soldier serving with the Canadian Expeditionary Force would've been sporting a brush cut. Long hair was absolutely verboten & never, ever would've been allowed under any circumstances - even if he were Brad Pitt.
this movie is far more than just a Brad Pitt movie; it's a movie made for us to realize how horrific war is. this might be just a movie; but in reality we face wars beyond our imagination and on screens to see the pain, misery, sorrow, regrets, and hatred of those who we face and fight; for no reason at all. this is why; I hate politicians and don't care for them. I work as a chemical engineer; as a chemist and I've seen Hell's Furies. and they want nothing from humanity; except the love and compassion of life on earth without wars and hatred for others. we no nothing about. Thank you; Brad Pitt. You will always be Achilles to me!

I so agree. I think Aiden's role was by far the hardest of all the actors as he had to convey loyalty and resentment convincingly, at the same time.
