Today I will show you how to look after your awning. We are setting up our caravan and awning on our seasonal pitch. To many caravanning full time is living a dream, and it is indeed, once all work is done. After a few years of full time caravaning, we learnt that seasonal awning needs care and that they do perish in the sun and with time lose their waterproof coating. We are caravanning in the UK and on our awning, we use fabsil. In our work we use fabsil gold to waterproof canvas Belle Tents, which has a 5 times higher concentration of silicone to compare with regular fabsil. However the regular fabsil protects fabrics from UV, and as our awning is still waterproof we bought regular fabsil, which is considerably cheaper than Fabsil Gold. Before I apply Fabsil, I clean awning with hot water and regular washing up liquid. In the past I scrubbed our previous awning with Wet and Forget and even diluted bleach - DO NOT DO IT! After bleaching our awning started to leak, I damaged its waterproof layer and after winter, the awning just snapped. This spring we had to buy another awning, which is still waterproof, however I want to protect it from the sun as it is facing south. It is not the first time I am proofing and re-proofing caravan awning, to cover the roof I use a small roller on a telescopic pole, even two poles to reach the edge of the awning without climbing on the roof of our old caravan. I dip my roller in fabsil, get on the ladder and slowly roll it over the roof. I use a small roller to reduce wasting my product, it takes more time, but is more efficient than with use of a bigger roller. After and hour and half our awning should be watertight and stand up to the summer sun. For awning care, choose a dry sunny day, as you want to clean and dry your awning first and the apply a wateproofer of your choice and let it dry for at least 3 hours. My little awning care kit includes a 5l tin of fabsil - I only used half, a small roller, two poles and cable ties, also a small brush for touch ups. It takes time to set up a caravan, and seasonal awning, but it is worth the effort. I can't stress enough that your caravan awning, needs care and it will pay you back with longer life. Seasonal awning are not cheap and it makes sense to extend their lives as much as you can. I hope you enjoy our caravan vlogs. If you have questions about living in a caravan full time, please ask us in the comment section. The best way to keep your awning clean is clean as you go, do not let any dirt get ingrained in the fabric. Our full time living is much easier with a full awning, as living full time is slightly different than touring. Anyway, we still enjoy our extreme camping and caravanning, sharing caravanning tips with you, fellow Freedom Seekers who like us love camping UK, look out for new caravanning gear. Sitting watching the rain come down and the awning leaking like a sieve, we decided to look up awning reproofing and watched your vlog only to realise we are pitched about 25m away from where you filmed! Anyway, thanks for the vlog, definitely something we're going to be doing soon
