For the record, this is an AMAZING piece of engineering and the GTX 1650 is pretty impressive for gaming on such a compact notebook.....BUT. But using an Ice Lake CPU instead of Comet Lake with a discrete GPU cripples performance. :(

I'm hoping that once Intel XTU gets updated for 10th gen, it'll be possible to push the CPU to the 25W spec. Cooling doesn't seem to be an issue even when the 1650 and 15W Ice Lake are fully loaded... just feels like there's certainly some headroom left.

Did you check the power draw with a Wall monitor, or a Type-C monitor? I would bet that this is being gimped by cutting out a ton of power the power budget for that 1650 on a 100W hard cap.

Realistically, I'd use this laptop to drive larger monitors when I'm home, for programming and small game design (programming, mostly) while using the desktop for remote rendering and actual work. This laptop is my dream boat.
I don't understand why reviewers are taking these laptops as solo devices. Tell me which techie relies on a single computer and is efficient? UE4, Unity, Houdini, Autodesk software, all support remote rendering. Programming through cloud/cli and file management. Why would you not be using a cheaper desktop and a cheaper laptop to manage files in synchronization, like a modular server setup.

I game at home but need my laptop during the day for work and couldn't afford to have a dedicated laptop and gaming pc. By accessing device manager and disabling the nvidia GTX 1650 max q GPU, the pl1 of the CPU increase from 15W to 25W, with pl2 going as high as 45W in my laptop. I was able to get 1630 in cinebench r20 with the CPU running between 2.6 - 2.7Ghz. I still cannot hit 3.5Ghz consistently at 100% CPU load though :( . Maybe a bios unlock can help to change the pl1 of the CPU.

This is why you should only consider the 25W version (Mercury White one) with the iGPU. It runs at much higher speeds and the new iGPU is not bad. The 15W version of the 1065G7 is too power-constrained. If you want serious gaming, get the 15" or an external GPU.

You just made a big error by not comparing the cTDP of the IceLake with just 15W and the older i7 Model, which can use up to 25W, thus increasing the boost clocks by much more obviously. Which then also equals to more heat and less battery life.

We need to see what the power limits are for the Icelake version compared to the Whiskey Lake version. It's possible that Razer has lowered the power limits for the CPU to dedicate more of the power/thermal budget to the GTX 1650.
You aren't hitting 2.9Ghz all-core on Whiskey Lake at the 15W TFP, which suggests that Razer has been aggressive with the power targets on the Whiskey Lake variant.
From my testing on my Surface Pro 7, to hit 2.9Ghz all core you need about 25-35W depending on how heavy the workload is. For AVX-512 software, power is even higher (or clocks are lower), which makes sense because AVX-512 does (roughly speaking) double the work per instruction.
Overall Icelake is just OK on the CPU side. Comet Lake on 14++ has more cores and is going to be faster for CPU bound workloads in most cases. The real benefit of Icelake is the new Gen 11 GPU, which is significantly better, and AVX-512 if your applications can support it.

So ice lake is good choice if you really want to do the job with more battery life and cooler temperatures. Not all the people really care about the peak performance. Tbh I disagree, I think ice lake was a good choice that allowed them to put in a better GPU with better overall performance and battery life than previous generation while maintaining decent noise/thermals. Seems like a product that would excel as things get more optimized.
Only way I would want to improve it would for there to be a one button turbo that runs the cpu at the 25w spec for additional heat and noise. Would be nice to get to choose higher performance when you want it.

While I did purchase one to go with my EGPU, I do have a blade 15, but.. I've discovered that the Blade 15's and up are just.. worthless? yes they boast some pretty beast performance, but thats only IF it'll decide to behave as the Blade 15's have this uncanny ability to hard freeze and crash frequently, heck my blade 15 has days where it'll happily run the latest games, like the new MW! but dear god, Reach? for whatever reason it'll crash.
But when I switch to say my old blade stealth on the EGPU, runs smoothly, as beautifully as possible. Playing MW at 120fps constant and reach all day long. I honestly don't understand the inconsistencies, these are supposed to be premium products right? So for anyone looking at the blade 15? just buy a blade stealth and spend the rest on say an EGPU and heck, 2080ti if you really want to, you have enough!
This is mostly aimed at people who don't deal with desktops.

I think this isn't a failure at all? Look at the actual render times, with the exception of blender the new system CRUSHES. The 8th gen. It's not an upgrade for everyone but if you are using premier Pro, literally halving your render time is huge.

This seems like something Razer can address with a BIOS update given the headroom that's (seemingly) there based on the CPU temps. Those clocks just don't make sense. Do you guys have the 25w Iris Plus version of the Blade Stealth on hand? How does the CPU performance compare?

  • @AntonioNeto-du2ry
    @AntonioNeto-du2ry 5 ปีที่แล้ว

It is a software issue. I have the same laptop.
If you use throttle stop you can get more than 800 on cinebench 15 and the temperature doesn’t get much higher.
Hopefully Razer is going to release an update so you don’t have to use throttle stop to get those results.
What is weird is that if you run geekbench you get normal results, so I think the cpu is not working well with some benchmarks.

I think we've hit that "One computer per household" milestone a few years back. Perhaps it's time we consider that people already have laptops/phones/desktops and start looking at new models from that perspective.
I can see why it'd be hard to nail down a target audience like that, but you're not talking to first-time buyers anymore. This model will have (probably) better cooling. But if we assume most people have a desktop (and probably another device with internet capabilities) a laptop becomes more of a side-piece. It's a device to get things done, when you want to sit on the couch, go to the office or work from home.
This laptop, as most Razer laptops have been, is targeted at the gamer/prosumer crowd. It's designed as a companion to a more powerful computer; be that gaming or designing or editing. But you shouldn't be using a laptop as an editing workstation in 2019, you should realistically be using a desktop in synchronization through local wireless/ethernet. You only need to bring larger files onto your device and work in sections. Use desktop to finish/render. Is this not what you would be doing with a server at work? Why would you not recommend the regular folk do this too, setting it up isn't very difficult.

I think it's pretty good even CPU. It slows down the CPU while keeping temps down and that GPU is carrying most of the load during gaming. What's else do you want at 13 inches and in a device this slim. I find it an excellent buy. You pay premium for premium ATM.

Could the TDP of the 1065G7 be raised to 25W for sustained loads via XTU or ThrottleStop? I know many Thinkpads and other ultrabooks were capable of this for the 8th generation ULV CPUs. That may remedy some of the issues here, alongside an undervolt to keep temperatures down of course.

I have this laptop, the cpu runs at 25w as long as the dgpu is inactive. Now for some reason Cinebench defaults to the dgpu meaning the cpu runs at 15w for these tests . If you switch to the igpu in nvidia control panel you'll get Cinebench scores of 1800ish.

Maybe you could've try to change the CPU TDP with Intel XTU just to see if the performance would improve with an higher TDP. Also I don't think the configuration with the 1650 Max-Q makes much sense since now Intel iGPU is supposedly much better than the past.

  • @XenonG
    @XenonG 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Hah! Everyone was complaining about temps when Razer didn't do the cooling so well because the amount of surface heat exchange area needed to be packed so tight but they (Razer) also wanted to provide similar or better performance along with not too loud default cooling fan noise settings. Now they put a lower thermal limit, people are complaining about performance. Though I'm thinking it more to mitigate the solder balls between the chips and motherboard breaking connection from the heat differences from going up and down all the time because Razer's quality control is so crap.

  • @zeppast

This machine is definitely power limit throttling thus hurting performance. If Razor issues a bios update that could help performance a lot or you could just install Throttle Stop and increase the CPU voltage a bit and try an overclock.

You can pretty much get a 2060 Blade 15 for the same price as the 1650 Stealth, which I mean I get that the 13" is small but its not like a Blade 15 is a chunky product. And it would be 60hz (I believe on Stealth) vs a 144hz on the Blade 15, both FHD.
Cool product but I don't think it has a real market.

I think the new MSI 15 A10SC-012 - Prestige is more reasonable because the 1065G7 has better graphics so the gtx 1650 is kinda redundant but the prestige combines it with the new 6-core 10710U and a GTX 1650 which destroys everything whilst being slim and cool.

I deal with several VMs for school and would not recommend any machine without multiple storage drives and upgradable RAM. Also, cores count.
