Some of my favourite people across multiple fields of game development, all working on the same project together, retaining their creative freedom through crowdfunding? As a gamer it makes me feel joyful, and as an indie developer it makes me feel inspired. To say I'm looking forward to this is a huge understatement.
Hear hear! This is going to be such an exciting year for us. Both with Wasteland 2 - whether or not it will be completed in '12, we still have seen and will see the progress they will make - and the Baldur's Gate Enhanced Editions and potential sequels...
Which was still a great game given the amount of time they had (with an unexpected 2 month cut off development time) and the content that had to be cut.
They've gotten over three times more than they asked for so I doubt that's got anything to do with it. I imagine they're just working on stuff to show us when they start marketing it. Because usually by this stage in development a game wouldn't have been announced yet, but using Kickstarter means you have to announce it before you even get funding.
You guys did an absolutely STELLAR job with this game! I know I am kind of late, but until seeing Lazy Game Review's playthrough of the original Wasteland, I had actually never heard of it. I played it through to the end and enjoyed it immensely. Then, I heard about Wasteland 2, and I jumped in my chair, then calmed down, bought the game, and played it through. Absolutely worth $40, hell, for a game THIS GOOD, I wouldn't have minded paying $60!
In that case, I wonder if someone thought to port Fallout 3 into New Vegas so that you get all the extras (e.g. ammo crafting) in Fallout 3. Much like how Morrowind was ported into Oblivion.
Man I just cannot wait until the "kickstarter generation" of games start coming out. Finally games made the way the people making them wants them to be, not what shitty companies like capcom, ea, or activision make them.
Wasteland 2 and Shadowrun Returns will prove what real RPGs should be like, and not those unintelligent stupid crap they make these days. Wish I could support you more.
This kick starter thing is the best thing that could have possibly happened to the game industry. At least as far as the developers and gamers are concerned. The scummy publishing companies, not so much
I like all the fallout games. I like fallout 1 for its atmosphere, I like fallout 2 for basically the same reason I like fallout 1 only I think this one is better. Fallout tactics is a great game..well because you have to use your brain and its just really really fun. Fallout 3 is fun for exploring the detailed wasteland and I like its gameplay (download mods that like make headshots lethal, makes stuff more fun. And I like New Vegas because of its story and the choice system and its characters
I really want this to succeed, guys. I really do. I really want the glorious days of Planescape and Fallout to come back, for the new generation to find out what it's been missing, for us to relive the pure fun and joy we had with those games. But I do get this nagging feeling that it's going to topple over. I get this feeling, instilled in me through recent failures the market wants to call games, that Wasteland 2 is not going to make it. Hold me, guys ;_;
Nope. That "zero-tolerance" policy on the part of gamers on small details is why video game quality has decayed. With the kind of backlash the gamers can cause nowadays, publisher don't want to attempt something new and unusual anymore and stick to tried and true formula (to the point of stagnation).
Is it going to be turn based combat like the past game or real time combat like Fallout 3 did? Personally i do enjoy turn based combat but i prefer real time combat that i can control like Fallout and 3rd person games.
Cheers, what are your sources though? Secondly i never said anything about graphics and the more retro the game is the better :) it will be a nice nostalgia mix
I think you might consider something else than a numbered title to appeal to also the new gamers. Something like Wasteland (subtitle) or just simply Wasteland as many devs name their reboots of a game series. Most important is of course the game itself, but please consider the potential of this game for all videogameplayers. I want this game to have success!
its nothing like what i wanted, poor quests, poor combat, story could of been written by my little brother and not to mention the hoard of bugs, no real choices, poor "skill" tree( i use that loosely) too easy. the list does go on. the only decent thing about the game was the world design and score. its a great game by your opinion, mine is that it is highly overrated
my pc is a 7 year old hunk of junk that can't run any new games, but i'm still super excited for this game to come out. fallout 3 and new vegas were fun, but not the true fallout sequels most of us fans hoped for. i can't wait for wasteland 2. they even have mark morgan on board! so awesome!
Brian Fargo you are my hero. Look at all those amazing games in the background also.. Planescape and Baldurs gate? My favorite games of all time along with Fallout 1&2.
The point is, is that you read it wrong then. He said he backed 10k on kickstarter, and that he loved Fallout 3.... you still with me there? Yea, buddy? Ok... Then I said prepare for disappointment since it's nothing like Fallout 3. I never once said FO3 was better than FO1 and FO2. All I said was that he will be disappointed since he thinks it's like Fallout 3. You got all that buddy? Or are you still confused?
For this type of game you dont need very complex AI like for Elder Scrolls where you can look how npc eats, talk, go to bed ...etc. This would be turn based game looking your character from top. Most of Npc will just walk around using waypoints and give you dialogs. Also they will use trigger areas where you activate enemy to attack you. Unity 3d is good engine so they don't need to build all from scratch.
Go back to playing Fallout 3 then.If your not a fan of turn-based isometric RPGs,tough. You haven't been robbed,if you came into this with any misconception that it would be anything like ''3'' that is you fault. This game is not for you, clearly.Wasteland 2 is for the fans for the fans of Wasteland,it's for the fans of Fallout 1and2,it's for the people who loved those games and that system of gameplay.A game like this hasn't come out in years and it's about time that we get another really good RPG
To the Bethesda-Fallout 3 fans thinking this is another FPS without a good main story, memorable characters, acting, writing,or ending, you are in the wrong place. To fans of the original game,Fallout 1 and 2(or even NV I guess) This game is probably going what you have been waiting for.Obsidian and inXile, I hope you create a great game which will please fans of both series'and bring back the classic Isometric Turn-based RPG into gaming. We believe in you!
they havent gotten any money before recently from the Kickstarter project, so they havent had any time to make any trailers, and im sure they are at hard work with writing the story, drawing concepts for characters and environments, im sure we wont see this the game before a couple years. I fear the AI might be sorta sloppy because coding the AI is VERY expensive, time consuming and difficult, but they'll get it done!
Fargo + Avellone + creator of p'n'p Wasteland+ music composer from F1 and F2 + Wasteland 1 creators - annoying publishers = my eyes full of tears!!! The only minus i see is that without pushing from publishers i doubt they keep (any) terms of release. But we've got use to that with Blizzard and it seems for most of the time it worked well. BTW, Chris THANK YOU FOR PLANESCAPE!!!!
I found Skyrim to be bland as hell. Every quest was just a trip to a dungeon somewhere on the map without any sort of originality. The dragons were menial to fight after the second one and they really cut down on all the personality of the game. There was only one city with one quest that I really found memorable which was Markarth and the Cidnha mine quest. Oblivion was a bad game but at least it was funny and memorable at some parts
I think people are too harsh on the ending in general. The main problem is that most characters had the final parts (or more) of their character arcs cut. The final conversation with Kreia does provide closure for most plot threads in one way or another. I thought the (mostly incidental) solitude of the Exile worked well in this sequence since this was the main character arc/plot thread that had to be resolved.
I didn't make my point very clearly because I was bumping the character limit. I was trying to say that for all the undue shit Obsidian gets for releasing "buggy" or "incomplete" games, Bethesda games have the same damn problems without the quality core to justify it, and somehow people think it's funny or endearing. Making matters more complicated is that Bethesda was responsible for QA on New Vegas and people still shake their fists and go "Obsidian!!" when anything breaks.
Not Obsidian, they made the worst Fallout game Fallout NV. It was god awful I'm sure everyone will agree. The game is not all about the writing (Alpha Protocol) it's about the core game mechanics and they failed at that, they didn't even bug test their game which scared many people away. Not to mention the whole design of NV was very boring, Vegas was a huge disappointment being only in 3 different sections with hardly any night life. But I'm sure the writing of this game will be slightly better
Skyrim is by no means a "great RPG." It's as buggy (or worse) as anything Obsidian has ever developed, its overall writing is at the "high school creative writing class" level, its quest design is linear and boring, and the one potentially cool new thing (skill trees) is dragged down by lame "do X but Y% better" perks. It's better than Oblivion, yes, but it's not as good as New Vegas. Other 3D sandbox "role-playing" games this applies to: all of them.
My reasons for backing the project is somewhat different: 1. Hardly any games like the first Wasteland are made anymore. Most have very narrow boundaries as to what you can and cannot do. 2. This is funded by the community thereby relieving the pressure normally coming from big-name investors which often results in a washed out or rushed version of the original vision. 3. Obsidian is stepping in to help and given Fallout 3, and New Vegas, I anticipate great quality here as well.
Brian, that 600k in the home stretch for Double Fine came about, in large part, because of the live-stream celebration they had just as the project was closing on Kickstarter. I personally didn't back them until that point, so I figure there's probably more people like me out there that will back you if you do something similar. Besides, I don't think Tim will mind too much if you copy him. ;)
Yeah, they have received $2,933,252, fucking awesome :P Go to their homepage "see description" and check out what you can get for donating to this awesome cause ^^
To all the people in the comments, yes Fallout 1 and 2 are great. I've never played Wasteland, but I'm sure I'll love it. So no, it's not gonna be like Fallout 3 or NV, and that's okay, because the originals are great. But to the people saying Bethesda ones suck, I don't think that's true. 3 and NV are both in my top ten favorite games!
No, actually that is about right. F3 had a much darker tone that the originals. Hence the washed out green palette , the gloomy weather ordeal and the like. There also wasn't much of that humor in FO3 either. While F1 and 2 were set in a more cheerful place in a sense. (Same with F:NV) And the humor was there too (Again, same with F:NV)
I remember a building somewhere in wasteland where upon trying to enter a slit opens in the door and a guy asks you "What is the word?" and you had to type the password. It baffled me for the longest time and I looked everywhere for a clue and when I finally figured out the riddle and the door actually opened it was almost cathartic.
Sounds like they will make it semi turn-based like Baldurs Gate. Where it's real-time unless you press spacebar (pause) then queue up commands and let it go again. That was a big improvement over the traditional turn based! You can micro-manage every action or let your characters do their own thing if it's an easy fight and you just want to keep moving.
The thing is capcom ea and activision can give developers much more than 2 or 3 millions, and kickstarter can't... But i feel the same way man, i hope this kickstarter games will be a really succes, so companies will change at least a little bit their ways.
The question you should ask is "what Bethesda have not done?". And the answer for that is: Bethesta have not made a single good crpg game in their whole history. Every game from elder scrolls series is bland and trite. Simply boring. The only reason that Bethesda games are so popular is that they heavily advertise them and the tasteless flock buys.
I am very curious. Top shelf: XXX, Planescape: Torment, XXX, Baldurs Gate, System shock(??), XXX. Middle: Sacrifice, Wasteland, Thief, Die by the sword, XXX, Star Trek:SA, Descent, Fallout 2. Bottom: XXX, XXX, XXX. :-) Anyway, I'm so looking forward to the game and can't hope enough for more kickstarted projects developed with the mindset of classic RPGs.
what if I wna be a legion not rangers lol. The one thing i wna see in this project is the followers you can recruit can be as many as you like and also that they grow with your character it be cool if your character was known for say like being a cruel badass that your followers would become to act as such but....all im looking forward too is another post apoco game
Seeing this happen has been nothing short of amazing, even from the outside. Mr. Fargo, you are a shining light in the games industry, I thoroughly enjoy your candour and am loving the insider info you're giving the fans. I hope it continues throughout the development of WL2. All the best to you and your team!
The combat system, perhaps have a blend of real time w/die rolls or such? Similar to Baldur's Gate/Dragon age Origins (not two, no no not two). That combat worked good and felt "fast" but also let you pause when you want to, assign things to do, it felt tactical and old school without being slow/completely turned based.
Can't get over how awesome this is. Wasteland was actually the first game I've ever played and if someone would have told me a couple of years ago that we would be getting a part two I would laughed at them. It's been a REALLY long time since i've been this excited about a videogame and it feel damn good.
i really dislike this Fargo character, not saying he will not pull through, but he's not my idea of Game designer. The guys at Arkane on the other hand
Skyrim is a good sandbox rpg, as long as one prioritises the sandbox nature of it. I'd say ever since morrowind, bethesda started trailing behind what a real rpg is and moving more towards action rpg territory. Their games are still amazing though, just not as rpg as they used to be.
That would be because they use the same engine. Same assets too. That's why they look the same. Actually within the code of Fallout New Vegas is nearly every asset(meshes etc) used in F3. Fallout New Vegas is more like a REALLY big mod for Fallout 3 :). That doesn't take away from it though.
you honestly preferred fallout 3, one of the most dumb action-rpg of the decade? badly written, full of bugs, played in a world with only two colors (grey and brown), where you must wander around dully killing mutants and completing tedious quests. wow, you sure have great taste...
Looks to me like this: Top Shelf: XXX, Planescape: Torment, Bard's Tale, Neuromancer, Stone Keep Middle: Sacrifice, Wasteland, Bard's Tale 3, Die by the Sword, Cyberia, Star Trek:SA, Descent, Fallout 2. Bottom: Spell Bound, Fast Break, Star Trek: Klingon Academy
spoilers ?? I guess i will stop watching the video, anyway i will be happy to help this project it's truly amazing. And i can't wait for this game and the double fine games. I think i'm gonna help the shadowrun project too because the game on the snes was brilliant too.
I love first person games, but this is gonna be heavily squad based and I think the isometric style would be much more effective. I thought it worked great in fallout 3 (despite its other problems) as it was a kind of lone wanderer experience.
I don't know if you'd agree with this Brian, but please make the game cost under $50, $40 would be great $30 would be ideal. $60 is to much money I think to ask a kid of 22 to shell out, Thanks can't wait to see the final product.
Fallout 1 is from the 90s, and it had plenty of graphics and atmosphere. Xenoblade runs on the Wii, meaning it has PS2 era graphic, but it looks amazing due to the art direction (especially if you play it on Dolphin upscaled to 1080p)
You know who did the QA for New Vegas when development was finished? Bethesda. Which means that the bugs in New Vegas escaped scrutiny because Bethesdas QA department failed to pick it up. And theres no such thing as "no bugs", in any form of software.
I agree with an engine similar to Temple of Elemental Evil, and I love turn-based combat. I don't have a problem with taking my time with deciding how to handle the tactics involved with combat, either. Looking forward to this game.
How about a thumbs up for anyone who upped their pledge after seeing this? Personally, I upped from $15 to $50, because I believe that this project will be so amazing, I will always want to have a physical reminder that I was a part of it.
I love this guy. I am so psyched about this game and i am so happy that I was able to contribute to it. Thank you all for contributing and thank you Brian for bringing this about. I just wish i was rich enough to give more than a hundred bucks.
Know the difference between old school gamer and new school gamer? NS gamer bash on old games for being shit, and OS gamer bash on new games for being shit, stop the stupid war and respect each other please.
looks at comments - F**K ITS ALL HIPSTERS dude, cant I enjoy skyrim, and other roleplaying games AND games like wasteland WTF people!!! I look forward to wasteland, but I am not going to be a f**king snob towards newer games!
A nice collection of games he's worked on too. Hey Brian, have you guys looked at how Temple of Elemental Evil handles the top down 3/4 isometric? It's a Troika title that I bet you could score the rights to the engine cheap!
I'm am extremely pleased to hear the game won't be pure desert. That was a big issue with Fallout 3. DC is near beautiful swamp land, so the whole area should have been overrun with greenery after a century.
I hope so much that my unsatied hunger and grief for and over Van Buren (and unreleased Troika Games postapo RPG) woun't spoil the joy I should have when I'll see ending credits of W2 for the first time :)
Really interested to see what passionate, experienced and talented developers can do with out a greedy, stupid, piece of shit publisher shafting them all the time. I mite even spend money on this.
I can tell you haven't spent much time actually playing skyrim, or maybe you did so on a kids console. I've played skyrim for over 100 hours, on PC, and haven't gotten a single crash or bug.
Why? They are the best WRPG developer around atm (alongside CDProjekt). They develop actually deep RPGs with great writing instead of the dumbfied/simplified shit Bethesda & BIoware do nowadays.
Funny how the games in the background are all games that you remember with fondness... Through the video I constantly found new titles and thought "wow, are these games connected.. well, no wonder!"
Not to be an annoyance but I thin k you should know that Bethesda Game Studios (Elder Scrolls developers) made Fallout Three. Obsidian was involved in Fallout 1 and 2, as well as Fallout New Vegas.
ITS GOING TO BE AWESOME! As additional feedback, of love these videos and would very much like to see more of these Q&As or even "OMG it's awesome!" updates throughout the development process.
Cannot wait! And what better timing for GoG to have given Fallout 1 away for free - that was just the kick this project needed to capture a new audience. You have my sword, bow, and $15 pledge.
The enemies will have AI for combat. For easy combat that you don't want to go through all the turns, allow the player to resolve the combat automatically with the AI taking over for the player.
Bethesda might allow Obsidian to alternate Fallouts with Bethesda, but they're not doing to hand the franchise over to anyone else. Wasteland 2 looks interesting, but it appeals to a much smaller fan base then Bethesda's games do.
TwistedPenguinGamer wrong, its a Pause-Plan and Go Action Adventure RPG.... shooting is just a minor part of the game, you can go Full on 3rd Person MELEE or as a 1st Person MELEE/Shooter... it mostly focus on the choices / Tactic and Story.... think of skyrim with guns, The fighting Mechanics are mostly boring but Smart...
will i get something power ammor from fallout 1-2. Will i get some some place like new reno, vault... Will i get those man gaul, mutant,... damn, i miss the old fallout so much :-
I preordered Wasteland 2 and bought Fallout 1, 2, tactics, fallout 3, and New Vegas I love the mood of the world it presents. I know these guys will surpass our expectations.
You BETRAYED BLACK ISLE STUDIOS AND INTERPLAY YOU MUST MAKE THE NEXT FALLOUT THE FALLOUT 3 THAT INTERPLAY MADE LOOKS BETTER IN MY OPINION SO PLEASE TRY TO GET BACK THE FALLOUT SERIES
I have never played the original Wasteland, probably never will because its so old but its gonna be awesome for me personally to play a follow up to a game that eventually became Fallout.
So we have people from Black Isle and Troika Games working on an isometric RPG without greedy publishers telling them what to do to sell more copies. SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!!
I honestly feel like Oblivion was better than Skyrim. While the game was completely flawed and broken at least it had some amount of charm and humor. Skyrim was bland and overly gritty
Obsidian has some of the best writers in the industry, however the problem is the execution of their programmers and coders. Which usually turn the game into a pile of unplayable garbage.
They're probably going to make investments with the $3 Million that they have before they truly begin hiring and start active production, but that's just what I think.
Just that actually! Google "A Requiem for the Capital Wasteland Mod" :) It makes it where you can port your character from Vegas to F3. Pretty cool if you ask me.
Anyone who played Planescape:Torment should buy this. Because Chris Avellone will be contributing and if you didn't know, he singlehandedly wrote about 50% of PST's script.
Hey, mr. Fargo, my pleasure. Letting a developer do things his way is rewarding enough, not to mention the great game. And thank you for considering Linux support.
interplay kinda made wasteland they made it with electronic arts also fallout was made from wasteland and it has no connection to fallout so no that won't happen.
I hope these inside jokes aren't TOO inside...it's been ages since I've been able to play Wasteland. Maybe I should try to find it again so I can brush up.
Some of my favourite people across multiple fields of game development, all working on the same project together, retaining their creative freedom through crowdfunding? As a gamer it makes me feel joyful, and as an indie developer it makes me feel inspired. To say I'm looking forward to this is a huge understatement.
you made a great job with Wastealnd 2 i cant stop playng it

they created games taht had huge impact on my life. thank you! and thank you for making more games like that! i will definatelly support u
So glad Obsidian are onboard too, this gets better and better. BRINGONTHEAWESOME
well I am glad you got the kickstarter but kinda pissed I missed out contributing for all that great stuff and to help chip in
Which was still a great game given the amount of time they had (with an unexpected 2 month cut off development time) and the content that had to be cut.
Oh man, i'm extremely excited about this, really hope you people end up raising more than double fine even though i love them aswell :D
you can still preorder from the wasteland 2 site gogo
Actually, I believe that for a long time, Brian Fargo had been a publisher. Still kind of is.
Interplay has always been a solid company. Descent is one of my favorite games.
They've gotten over three times more than they asked for so I doubt that's got anything to do with it. I imagine they're just working on stuff to show us when they start marketing it. Because usually by this stage in development a game wouldn't have been announced yet, but using Kickstarter means you have to announce it before you even get funding.
Even though this will be turn based I really hope the combat will be playable and fast paced.
pretty much my thoughts on the subject
A very talented games creator I was there playing Bards Tale, Fallout / Wasteland almost from the very beginning., thanks Brian.
Question: Will it be text based like in Wasteland 1 or will it be 3D graphics like old school Fallout?
You guys did an absolutely STELLAR job with this game! I know I am kind of late, but until seeing Lazy Game Review's playthrough of the original Wasteland, I had actually never heard of it.
My reasons for backing the project is somewhat different:
:-)
Anyway, I'm so looking forward to the game and can't hope enough for more kickstarted projects developed with the mindset of classic RPGs.
what if I wna be a legion not rangers lol.
Looks to me like this:
Top Shelf: XXX, Planescape: Torment, Bard's Tale, Neuromancer, Stone Keep
Middle: Sacrifice, Wasteland, Bard's Tale 3, Die by the Sword, Cyberia, Star Trek:SA, Descent, Fallout 2.
NS gamer bash on old games for being shit, and OS gamer bash on new games for being shit, stop the stupid war and respect each other please.
looks at comments - F**K ITS ALL HIPSTERS
dude, cant I enjoy skyrim, and other roleplaying games AND games like wasteland WTF people!!!
For easy combat that you don't want to go through all the turns, allow the player to resolve the combat automatically with the AI taking over for the player.
even unfinished still better then fallout 3 and probity fallout 4 too unless Bethesda lets obsidian and brian fargo make it
Really? I personally think fallout 3 was one of the games of the generation.
r
max rav Have you played Fallout 2?
fallout 3 isn't even the same type of game its a first person shooter
Will i get those man gaul, mutant,... damn, i miss the old fallout so much :-
I preordered Wasteland 2 and bought Fallout 1, 2, tactics, fallout 3, and New Vegas
I love the mood of the world it presents.
Which usually turn the game into a pile of unplayable garbage.
wish i could have found out about wasteland 2 earlier. I wanted to get my name in the credits with the $100 kickstarter :(
@nustiunumipasa You say you dislike him, yet you seem to have no problem jumping on his coat tails for a shameless plug.
