The lecture was doctored. Imam Ocasio mentioned a number of situations during the lecture, when Pakistani/Arab organizations tried to co-opt the Latino Dawah movements; however, that part of the video was removed. Interesting indeed...

This is so painful to hear. We have to work hard to be accepting and check our arrogance at the door. May Allah bring the ummah closer through understanding

If we're really concerned about this issue, then there needs to be honest dialogue from all sides, not just from Boriquas, Latinos in general, or African-Americans, but even from the "Muslim Immigrant" communities. To refuse to bring up this subject and sweep it under the rug doesn't solve the problem, it makes the problem worse! Immigrants need more scholars like Imam Omar Suleiman.

Im south Asian and I respect all black and Latino people. Not only we are fellow visible minorities if they are Muslim we are brothers and friends too. Black and Latino Muslims are relatively new to Islam as a community. We south Asians were once new converts to Islam too, our ancestors were Hindus. Charismatic Afghan and Arab preachers and mystics came to India and our Hindu ancestors were very impressed with this Religion that came from Arabia. As our numbers grew we got our own confidence and developed our own unique Muslim culture. Once you are comfortable in your own Muslimized culture you wont allow for the racism of other ignorant Muslims affect your faith.

There is no difference between an Arab and a non Arab, a white person or a black person, except for their faith in God.

I have experienced racism from Arab Muslims, Latina Muslims and Asian Muslims. I no longer go to the Masjid. I make Ramadan alone. I was Muslimah Al'hamdulilah before I meet any Muslim people. A few years after I accept Islam I marry with an Arab and everyone keep telling him why you don't marry a White lady or an Arab? You should divorce her, THOSE people make sex like dogs with everyone. After 9 years he threw me away like garage. He said "I want to be marry with a woman the people respect not someone that people are laughing at." this was just a test from Allah to strengthen my Imam and my taqwa.

Sister, I'm sorry that you had to go through that! At least you still are Muslim and staying steadfast to Al-Islam. Shaitan wants to do anything to lead Muslims away from Al-Islam and nationalism and racism are one of them. Do not allow so-called Muslims' bad examples to discourage you from going to the masjid and develop sisterhood with those who would develop sisterhood with you.

the Speaker would easily pass as North African or Arab so why should he be confontated with racism... and a non arab muslim is not better than an arab muslim (read it )
