The next closest vehicle safety wise is another $50,000 more than Mazda
What gets weird with cars that last this long, is all the other stuff on the vehicle wears out and needs replacing before the engine. Then you start getting into other problems that can add up to an odd situation of things going out like wiring, electronics, rust, seats and interior parts just cracking and breaking, hoses and lines and gaskets. 🤔 Just something to think about, I had a 1983 Honda motorcycle, the engine and transmission last so long that everything else needs to be replaced, creating a huge rebuild project. It's cool, but beware if you think you're getting something that's trouble free just because the engine is still running strong

Those Toyota's, they're just on a different level in reliability, the Mazda skyactiv engines and gearbox combo are really fun dynamically, and apparently seem to be very reliable
Was great for Mazda to get engineering back after Ford left in 2009. Everything they do has a drivability element but is also made with a keep-it-simple where possible attitude to ensure reliability and maintainability. The Skyactiv 6 speed for example was designed with a lock up clutch design to ensure that it always responded quickly. Speed is the one reason Mazda rejected the very Japanese loved CVT.
My little 2K Corolla has 288,xxx miles on it and is still running strong. Everything still works in it and I get great gas mileage. Only issue is she burns about half a quart of oil every thousand miles or so.
Nothing beats the naturally aspired V6 3.5 2GR FKS Toyota/Lexus with either 6 speed auto pre 2018 Camry or the new 8 speed auto. Second is the other V6 naturally aspired 4.0L under the hood of the 4Runner/Prado in the Middle East. The only turbo that might live to its promise is the new turbo 3 cylinder 1.6L G16E-GTS engine code on the new Corolla/Yaris GR's out there, period.
The Ford - Mazda 2.3 engine is almost indestructible. My 2006 Mazda3 Racecar started with 160k and I’ve never touched it after 5 years running SCCA. Raised the rev limiter to 7500 and removed the balancer - I’m banging off the limiter more times than I want to admit, but no oil use after a weekend.
I bought a ‘07 Lexus IS350 with 120k miles in 2016 for $12k. Almost 9 years later at 196k miles, she runs and drives better than many new cars. What a bargain this reliable, fast and smooth car it is. Mobil 1 every 5k miles and she’ll last me another 10 years no problem.
I like the late Mazdas and appreciate that they still invest resources in the internal combustion engines but honestly the apocalypse-ready vehicles are still Toyotas.
I use Ford Escape Lincoln MKT Cadillac escalator and Chevy Tahoe and GMC for cab and limo services for my business and saw these cars have more than 700,000 miles on it and I will say there
The dealers just have to learn how to sell these cars with ‘reliability’ stories. Instead they want to market it based on sportiness. Doesn’t make sense to me.

That 3.5L 2GR-FKS is also in the Tacoma it’s a very robust motor the only v6 in any truck that has a 6 Bolt main , Lotus barrows that exact motor from Toyota in their sports car making close to 500hp and rally cars in Japan, have that 2GRFKS pumping out 800 hp. It’s an incredibly reliable , tough motor
2GR-FE is same as 2GR-FKS , same displacement same crank most of the motor is identical with exception of a few parts that they have updated for the 2GRFKS which are better .
Why is it that turbos seem to be causing reliability issues on modern engines? The Volvo 2.5 turbo 5-cylinder was a real workhorse for decades. Maybe not the smoothest but good power, decent fuel economy, and routinely last over 200k miles with no issues. It’s old school turbo with none of that direct injection business. I had one for 11 years and sold it because I wanted something newer.
Alpha...Not sure if the older Volvos used the Garrett or Mitsubishi turbochargers. SAABs have used both, and the later, larger Mitsubishi TD04 turbochargers last forever. My 2008 SAAB 9-5 with 131,000 miles has the TD04 and its been rock-solid reliable. I've spoken with many 9-5 owners with cars up to 400,000 miles, and their original Mitsubishi TD04 turbocharger is still as strong as new.
The P5 with the 2.5T FWD is a durable, simple, and reliable. 160k with reasonable maintenance and the engine is very clean and runs strong. The XC90 from the early 00s competes well even today for safety, refinement, and comfort.
@@testymann5045 I believe that the Volvo 2.5 inline 5 uses a Garrett GTA2056V. Those are reliable. My 2008 SAAB 9-5 uses a beefier Mitsubishi TD04, which also lasts 200,000+. What I've always wondered is if a turbocharger is rarely stressed, will it last longer? Mine rarely even goes mid-gauge, except for entering a highway or passing.
Get a used Mazda 6. They discontinued it in 2021 if I remember correctly so it’s not like you’d be buying a 10 year old car. Or get a new mazda cx-30, smaller than the cx-5 and about the same price range as the mazda 6
I bought a 2021 Mazda 3 non turbo because I knew turbos can cause a lot of issues. The normally aspirated engine has plenty of power to get out of the way or pass. And the inside looks better than some cars that cost twice as much. Way better than that Mazda Miata shown in this video.
My 1987 Volvo 240 is still my daily driver. It has 650,200 miles. Runs great...cost pennies to insure, and is exempt to yearly emissions testing. It is heavier and safer than any of the cars sold today where they push plastic and rubber parts.
My Victa lawn mower engine also lasts forever which is a natural aspirate. If the engine was designed simple with old proven tech it should last longer, certainly.

The 2.3 L 4 cylinder engine in my 2008 Ford Ranger has lasted 340,000 km and is still going strong. It burns less than a 1/2 L of oil in the 8-10,000 km between oil changes.
I had a 2018 tacoma that was a nightmare reliability wise. I cringe every time i see a shill pushing toyota and honda v6s as though they are the best ever. I can tell you they're not! Those old Rangers were awsome trucks....
@@unclefester4626 absolute delusion. 3.5 V6 on the 3rd gen Tacoma might be shite, but 4.0 V6 on 2nd gen Tacoma and 4th/5th gen 4Runners is renowned for its reliability
@@ninja5431 i had coil problems. It would do a backfire and go into limp mode. Weirdly it only happened on the interstate at 65mph. Every time it happened the "event" was recorded in the ECM i believe. The dealership admitted that part but would not fix it and then they would clam up and quote some toyota policy about not discussing the issue or the fix for it...which they didn't have. The other issue was the fuel pump recall and the replacement that failed as well. I don't remember complaining in any of my posts about the engine it was the crap electronics the put on that truck that was my issue. Whatever the supposed reliability of a motor might be its a mute point if its allways shutting down because of other problems. And the dealership....oh they left a horrible taste in my mouth from dealing with them. That dealershit basicly finished it for me. No more overpriced garbage for me.
The 2.3 in the Ranger is a Mazda design.
@markleggett3944 Thank you. I didn't know that but it makes sense given the old Mazda-Ford partnership
Fantastic choices Mark, these are some of the hardest vehicles to locate in Phx.
Although unrelated to the topic, these luxury cars should start to feature an optional ejection seat (with parachute) for passengers who become annoying...
i know they are getting older but dont forget the 3800 series I, II, and III engines and dont forget the supercharged variants. i love those engines. easy to service and they run forever.
That’s true
Sad that GM doesn’t make that engine anymore.
The 1UZE is probably the best engine I've ever owned, and I'm 63 years old.
Without a doubt, the UZ family engines are the best
as a toyota/lexus loyalist i so applaud you for these videos thk you
Thank you very much
Love the MDX! If I were car shopping, it'd be at the top of my list.
You and me both!
My 1985 Toyota 4runner SR5 5 speed has the greatest engine, the 22re. currently has 281k miles, no leaks. cast iron block.
22 r or re is super reliable I've seen many with 500,000+ miles. Had a 1981 pickup back in the day. .
Transmission usually breaks down first. It's gotta have as good of a transmission
I own a Mazda CX five and also a CX three switched over from Honda the best decision I ever made.
What's the major differences? Thinking bout switching from Honda to Mazda as well. Thanx
The head gasket on my wife’s Honda Civic blew. I didn’t want to buy another civic but my wife insisted because she loved the new civic design with the digital speedometer. At about 35,000 miles a piston went straight through the head of the engine. Thankfully it was still under warranty. Mazda is extremely reliable but their safety measures are incredible. The next closest vehicle safety wise is another $50,000 more than Mazda
Tempted to get a Mazda CX-5 but online forums are full of complaints re oil burning issues for both NA and turbo 2.5L engines on multiple models.
Keep rocking'! I'm seriously leaning on getting out of the Audi lineup and into Toyota. Done wasting money on cars on all things...
Same here but my A4 is worth less than the payout figure. Might be stuck with it for a while.
You will never regret that decision, I own 2 Toyota's and both are brilliant. I love B.M.W. and Audi to drive, but not for ownership.
You are absolutely correct, I have a 2004 Nissan Sentra 1.8s with an automatic transmission with 129,000 miles, and the engine and transmission work great, but everything else has fallen apart.
I own 2 Mazda Cx5 s 2022 and 2024 glad to hear they made your list!!!
Nice
What makes this guy special is he doesn’t read a script at all. He just knows everything about almost every fucking car which is amazing..
Pretty sure he uses some notes and does his homework before recording/editing, but to your point, he does seem very knowledgeable, and extremely well-spoken.
It's not just the engine that you got to worry about, it's also the transmission that is expensive & must have reliably built in
Many engines cost 10k or more. Transmission always come in second to the engine.
The BMW 5 SERIES 2.0D Litre F10 is a great engine had my 5 series for 9 years now it still drives great with over 200000 on the clock.
Thanks
Glad I have two Toyota's 4 & 8 cylinders. Both with 180k miles & run perfectly.
My 2013 Chevy impala 3.6 engine it a bullet proof , so far got 278,000 miles on engine and still run strong
Sounds like a good one
you got lucky
I appreciate your attention to detail of information you provide... keep up the great work you provide in your videos.
Well I just hit 320K on my 2004 Tahoe and it still runs so smooth you can't even hear it from 4 feet away!
Sweet
You should have included the Maxima with the legendary Nissan V6, I’ve had 4 of these vehicles, they’re bulletproof and last forever, “one of the best V6 engines ever made.” Paul Newman
Also, the 2.4 L four-cylinder engine on most Mitsubishi products last for a long time, except the ones with the CVT transmission. The 2004 to 2012 Galant mid-size sedan is an example, because it only has the four-speed automatic transmission. Thanks.
their L200 pickups from even the 90s are still abused on a daily basis here. even the pajeros are hella desirable. weird to see people calling Mitsubishi unreliable

Turbo is risky though as Mark mentioned

Honestly do not understand why mazda does not get more respect in the market place. On the level with Toyota reliability and to me a lot better looking
Tbh they have a soccer mom kinda vibe to them now lol. The sedans are okay looking. But the SUVs. Total soccer mom vibe lol
Easy to explain, it almost seems like they have only one dealership per state, and because of their sales volume, parts availability at stores is nowhere near Toyota and Honda.
That is easy , because they are not Toyota!
Hello Mark. Talking of innovation i watched in dismay a video the other day. On a channel they were comparing EV vehicles and how long they could drive on one charge. A BMW cannot remember the model, you had to touch the huge screen multiple times just to activate the cruise control. What wonderful innovation on a motorway travelling at 70 mph, i mean what could go wrong.🤨🤨
Great video Thank you
Can you do a video about most reliable transmissions
Yes I have and will get there again
One thing I like about toyota till today in South Africa still sell the toyota land cruiser 79 series with 3 deadly and strong engines 4.2 straight 6 diesel 4.0 v6 petrol andd 4.5 v8 diesel
My family own a 2008 mazda 6 over 300,000kms which has had zero problems so far and a 2014 Mazda 6 that is at 256,000kms only thing ive had to replace is the Serpentine belt. Amazing cars.
Purchased my wife a mazda 3 2 yrs ago. Fantastic car. The only problem I have is getting replacement parts can be a pain. Even going through the dealer replacement parts can be a headache.
That's because COVID caused all kinds of auto industry supply chain interruptions for ALL vehicle manufactuers, not just Mazda.
@@4orrcountry yeah, I have a Mazda and a Toyota and I remember being able to get a William parts at the dealer for Toyota for a long time. Now there’s certain parts they’re already discontinuing in the car is only six years old.

My 2014 4Runner Limited now has 309k miles and still no issues at all. Highly recommended
Ford uses the same 2.5 engine non turbo that Mazda uses. Very reliable engine
Mazda CX-5 with Signature Trim has real Nappa leather. The Sig is the highest and most equipped CX-5 you can get. I actually own a signature in soul red. Just wish they had more color options on the leather instead of dark brown.
You missed the Honda K Series... but good video man...!
My wife’s first car was a new 1994 Miata rally edition. Fun car.
Great cars, fun and reliable
Good video. I wasn't aware of some of these engines. You're spot on about the 4runner. They're the last of the reliable dinosaurs. Though I have high hopes for my manual trans 22 Tacoma with the 2gr-fks
Love Lexus and when it snows it's great to have the big snowplow on the front.
haha, true
Those Toyota's, they're just on a different level in reliability, the Mazda skyactiv engines and gearbox combo are really fun dynamically, and apparently seem to be very reliable
Was great for Mazda to get engineering back after Ford left in 2009.
Everything they do has a drivability element but is also made with a keep-it-simple where possible attitude to ensure reliability and maintainability.
The Skyactiv 6 speed for example was designed with a lock up clutch design to ensure that it always responded quickly. Speed is the one reason Mazda rejected the very Japanese loved CVT.
Any panther platform car will literally last forever.
My little 2K Corolla has 288,xxx miles on it and is still running strong. Everything still works in it and I get great gas mileage. Only issue is she burns about half a quart of oil every thousand miles or so.
Mark I want to cry every time I see a Lada or Renault Alliance
Haha, indeed, same
Nothing beats the naturally aspired V6 3.5 2GR FKS Toyota/Lexus with either 6 speed auto pre 2018 Camry or the new 8 speed auto.
Sounds like a lot of fun
Acura has Honda DNA so the engine will last forever assuming the owner will go through 3-4 transmission units before the engine actually breaks down
They are cvt so of course the accura will have several transmission replacements before the engine wears down 😂
Thanks for the update
I bought a ‘07 Lexus IS350 with 120k miles in 2016 for $12k. Almost 9 years later at 196k miles, she runs and drives better than many new cars. What a bargain this reliable, fast and smooth car it is. Mobil 1 every 5k miles and she’ll last me another 10 years no problem.
We have owned 7 Lexus. They dont break. I have the ES350 my wife the RX350.
Amazing indeed
My Tacoma and Highlander have the same engine and trans that come in the Lexus. They are very good indeed!

Got a Acura MDX 2019, the 3.5 V6 engine is excellent!
The dealers just have to learn how to sell these cars with ‘reliability’ stories. Instead they want to market it based on sportiness. Doesn’t make sense to me.
The Toyota gr 3.5 v6 has known oil leakage problems from the timing chain cover, cost 4-5 to fix.
I have a 2008 FJ..I think it has the same engine as the 4 Runner. Our 2011 Avalon has the same engine as the ES300 I think. Both are still running strong.
Lotus has the 2gr-fe from camry and has supercharched it for 400hp
2GR-FE is same as 2GR-FKS , same displacement same crank most of the motor is identical with exception of a few parts that they have updated for the 2GRFKS which are better .
Love the idea of cars lasting forever in our modern throw away world. Our sienna is going on but so many say it’s old get rid of it.

My 2018 F150 with a 3.5 has over 302,6xx on it now runs perfect good job Ford.
I would get a Mazda if they still had the Mazda 6. I like sedans but the Mazda 3 is just way too small.

You selling it? I love Volvos!
Back in the day, Chrysler's slant 6 was the best ever followed by the 318, LA Series.
