Why are Punjabis Decreasing in Indian Army?

- Over the years, Punjabis, particularly Sikhs have formed a major part of the Indian army. But did you know that they were present in even larger numbers in the British Indian army? Earlier, the British mainly had upper-caste Hindus and Muslims in their army- but then came the revolt of 1857. And that changed the status quo. More and more Punjabis (majorly Sikhs) began to be recruited in the British Indian Army. The dominance of Punjabis and Sikhs in the army continued even after independence- though somewhat in a milder form. But recently, these numbers have been declining. So much so that Punjab, which used to send the highest number of officers and recruits in the army- has been overtaken by other states.
What could be the reasons behind this? In this video, we talk about what are the major reasons why Punjabis and Sikhs were recruited into the army in such large numbers and then go on to discuss what are the reasons for the decline in this trend.

One point you are missing here. The combined recruit from ex-punjab (Haryana, Himachal and Punjab) is still 20-30% of all recruits. Before the division of state, the data is of the whole combined Punjab. Right now when data mentions Punjab, it only mentions the 1/3 of Punjab left. Also a lot of Punjabis who migrated to different regions in India after partition are also recruited. Combining all it will show Punjabis are still heavily recruited in the Indian army.
Also , I guess partition must also be a reason of falling Punjab numbers in army, as in British times, Muslims and Hindu punjabis were also very prominent and those recruitment areas were gone to Pakistan.

The main decline was seen in numbers of Punjabi soldiers after 1984 (blue star operation) many soldiers quit their jobs during that time and after people never showed that mush interest in army as compare to past. Even in my village almost every family had one soldier before but now only 2 from whole village.

Dozens of countries were created based on nationalities after the fall of the Ottomans empire. Italy was created in 1860 by merging various small kingdoms of Italian nationality. Now the question is what is nation and nationality? A nation is a society that shares a common language, culture, and history and has shared interests. But India and Pakistan were not created based on nationalities but on two nation (Islam Hinduism) bogus theory. Hence, these countries are based on religions. Bangladesh was created on the basis of Bangla nationality in 1971..
Punjab should be a free country based on Punjabi nationality like Bangladesh. But Hindu Punjabis and Muslims punjabi don't want to leave india and Pakistan, so we Punjabi Sikhs can't force them to follow us. Hindu Punjabis, who had deserted Punjabi language in 1951 and 1961 census by declaring Hindi as their mother tongue would never support a Punjabi nation state. They support a Indian state based on the Hindu religion. Similarly, Punjabi Muslims of Pakistan dont support Punjabi nation state either. They support Pakistan state that is based on Islam religion.
Similarly, Bengali Hindus don't support Bangla nation state Bangladesh and want to live in India which is based on Hinduism. So Punjabi muslims, Punjabi Hindus, and Bengali Hindus are free to stay in their respective countries based on religions. But similar to Bangla Muslims of East Pakistan, who created Bangla nation state Bangladesh without Indian Bengali Hindus, Sikhs have the right to create Azad Punjab (a Punjabi nation state) without Punjabi Hindus and Punjabi Muslims. As simple as that.
We Punjabi Sikhs have no problem living in a Punjabi Muslims or Punjabi Hindu majority Punjabi nation state.
The Punjabi speaker population of Muslims is around 10 crore. Punjabi speaking population of Hindus is around 3 crore (Punjabi Hindus in Punjab, Himchal, Haryana, Jammu and Delhi). Punjabi speaker Sikh population is around 2 crore. Hence Sikhs would be minority if both Punjabi muslims and Hindus or either one of them come form a Punjabi nation state with us Sikhs. But their radicals minds prefer religion over their nationality and they love to give up their Punjabi nationality and adopt Hindi and Urdu nationality in order to create a state based on their respective religions.
So when Sikhs alone form a Punjabi nation state, it would automatically be a Sikh majority Punjabi nation state called Khalistan. What's in the name? You can name it whatever you want. But in practice it would be Khalistan just like India is a Hindu rashtra in practice regardless of its official name or regardless of its constitution..

Mohak bhai seperation of Haryana in 1966 from panjab is one of the major reasons for the decline in recruitment figures . Soldiers(muslim+ hindus ) from Haryana region of undivided panjab were also in good number . After partition of india pakistan and then division of Panjab in Himachal and Haryana changed the figure drastically.

Not all Punjabis are Sikhs, I believe this video to be under researched. Majority of Punjabis are Muslims who are now Pakistanis. A lot of Punjabis are Hindus too. Punjabi means a person who originates from Punjab region and can be Hindu, Muslim,Sikh, Christian, Jain etc

Not only sikh contributes towards nation in army , but also in all over India, there is 24 hour free Langar seva , and staying facility is provided , irrespective of religion or cast . In kisaan andolan also they did Langar, even for police , who were against them , were respectfully served ...

One has to study rationally, with reason and logic, with some scientific support. When you do this, SANATANA DHARMA ( HINDU DHARMA) is best and valid for all. SANATANA DHARMA is not a religion. The terms HINDU and RELIGION are with out side INDIA origin, even the name INDIA is of foreign origin.
The word RELIGION applies to ABRAHAMIC religions only - JUDA, Christianity and ISLAM . SANATANA DHARMA is diametrically opposite of ISLAM/Christianity. ISLAM and Christianity are blind beliefs. I want to point a few things and I hope Mohak sees this :-
1) "Punjabi" refers to any person who speaks Punjabi or follows Punjabi culture,it doesn't matter what is their religion and where do they live.Sikhism is "religion".
2)Pre- independence Punjab consisted of Haryana and Himachal too along with today's Punjab.Haryanvis and pahadis even today have large share in army despite such small population like Punjab.
3) Caste-discrimination is prevelant in Sikhism too.Jatts look down upon Majbi and Ravidassia Sikhs.
Cast discrimination maybe in punjab but not for sikhs in other part of India.

My uncle was in the army, he always used to tell us that without sikhs in the army our army would be considerably weaker. He also had strong admiration for the gurkhas as well. Both of them together in one army I think makes us unbeatable.

Insightful.. this also explains the high representation of Punjabis in Pakistani Military. But another point to consider is to zoom in further.. while most of Punjab is fertile and benefitted from the Irrigation systems, some areas near plateaus are still depended on rains for their agriculture. These districts have far greater trends towards army recruitment since they do not have many other opportunities even in agriculture. At least in Pakistan there are a few districts from Punjab which have a high representation in army as compared to others, these areas are mostly dependent on rainfall for their agriculture. And once a trend sets it it continues for several generations

I was halfway through the video when I realized what it was going to be, and sure enough it was. As the number of recruits in the army from other states increased, the percentage of Punjabis joining the army appeared as decreasing on statistics, no doubt this is an obvious thing.
Recently, I saw a video of a Fiji Indian man who had joined the US Army, and he seemed to have quite an interesting background, as he said in the video that he might be a 5th- 6th generation of the Indian laborers (taken there by the British). Also he spoke Hindi (certainly Hindi is still retained and learned/taught by the Indian descendants there). What's more interesting was that he used (some) words that were Marathi, so I guess his ancestors had had Maratha descendancy before settling somewhere in the north, probably around Haryana and then later they would be taken to these remote islands of Fiji as labourers by the British. Just wanted to share this as I found it quite an interesting thing.
The indentured taken to Fiji had marathi people too. Fiji Hindi is a mix of all the dialects of hindi, marwari, gujarati and marathi from central India. So of course it has mixed vocab. Its not about his ancestry.

I think british unfairly divide punjab doing injustice to punjabis. If pakistan was divided further after 71 war, Punjabis could get some of ancestral land back. Pakistan became British colony after 47, then US colony and now Chinese colony. Instead of demanding khalistan, punjabis should demand west punjab.
This is the British policy of divide and rule. Divide the once united Punjab on religious basis leading to the bloodbath of partition. There's a difference between Punjabi and Sikhs. Punjabi is a geographic/linguistic identity while Sikh is a religious one above all. Punjab also comprises of Hindus and other religious minorities. It is dangerous to mix up identities, which can lead to unnecessary identity-based politics.

Something I want to add when you talking about Punjabis in British Indian Army.....they compromise of Sikh, Muslim & Hindu Punjabis and when India divided most of the Muslim Punjabis are gone on to join Pakistani army and it was its core ...so after Independence percentage of Punjabis in Indian Army already decreased.....then After independence of India they maintain big share in the Indian Army.....until recently in last 20 years it declined
