My Bird Won't Play with Toys

CJ is our newly rescued Goffin cockatoo. He came from a home that provided nothing in the way of toys. Polycarbonate foraging toys are an excellent option for birds that won't play with toys. They can help reduce attention screaming, boredom screaming, and feather plucking because they help occupy the bird's time and mimic what they would spend their day doing in the wild- searching and working for food! When a bird understands how to use a foraging toy, they'll often opt to work for the food in their foraging toy even if the exact same food is freely offered in a dish. This is called "contra-freeloading" and is a super neat phenomenon! Busy beaks can't scream or pluck- and busy beaks are happy beaks! These are also not as destroyable as other toy options so they're great staples to have in your toy rotation- they'll save you money and provide lots of fun and enrichment for your bird.

NOTE: Even though I mention CJ is scared of toys, you'll notice several toys in CJ's cage. The toys you see here were introduced slowly over the course of several days using gentle desensitization and counter conditioning techniques aimed at helping CJ associate the toys with good things (like treats). At the time this was filmed he'd never touched the toys you see here- this foraging toy was the very first bird toy he played with since we rescued him!
